There is a tradition of scepticism about the historical value of Javanese chronicles (babad), which has led to a privileging of European sources in the study of Javanese history. This scepticism may rest upon doubt whether the Javanese even have a sense of history.
This paper argues that there is ample evidence in Javanese chronicles of a vibrant sense of the past. It analyses particularly Babad Sangkala. The original version of this work (Leiden cod. or. 4097) seems to have been completed c. 1750 and is shown here to be very accurate in its account of the reign of Pakubuwana II (1726-49). This babad demonstrates that in the mid-eighteenth century there was a Javanese chronicle tradition which assumed that events occurred in a sequence, that they had causes and consequences, that they could be judged and that the past was worth both knowing and recording accurately. This demonstration that Javanese chronicle writers could be concerned to record the past with precision is essential to showing that the Javanese were indubitably people with a sense of history and a capacity to record it. Clearly therefore historians of pre-colonial Java are as much obliged to take Javanese sources seriously as historians of France or Germany are obliged to use French or German sources. The author expresses regret that this seems not yet to be accepted by all scholars of Javanese history.
The racial dimension of social and political phenomena is recently taken into account in France. The emerging historiography is often based on American references, the relevance of which in the French context is being questioned here, as is the choice to identify the experience of the situation of a particular group and the implications of reading past social experiences to the prism of race alone. ; International audience Races and Races relations in the french context have only been recently studied in the french context. Emerging historiography borrows from north-american references. We here question the relevance of some in the french context as well as the choice to build a group by group history insisting on the singularity of each and the dominace of the racial factor. ; The racial dimension of social and political phenomena is recently taken into account in France.
In this article we review the North American and European literature dealing with the ecological modernisation theory. We distinguish the theory that was initially conceived by European authors from the revision they adopted to respond to competing US arguments. This evolution however does not address the geopolitical issues raised by the theory. We argue that such issues can explain the political success of the theory in specific arenas. ; 14 p.

Job Charnok of the English East India Company is supposed to have founded the city of Calcutta in 1690, but the geographical tract has a long history back up to the late fifteenth century. The socio-economic trend and pattern of growth of a few humble villages on the bank of the Ganges into one of the largest cities of the British Empire by the end of the eighteenth century has been outlined in the present paper on the basis of historical documents. Population of Calcutta estimated at 30,000 in 1704 reached half a million by 1 800 according to concurrent estimates which seems to have an upward bias. Anyhow, population increased perhaps by 3 to 4 times in course of the eighteenth century.
