Homesickness is a form of depression often precipitated by the combined stresses of sight loss, aging, and separation from family. It impedes the rehabilitation process in a residential program of adjustment to, and management of, sight loss for veterans. Predisposing factors are identifiable and constructive interventions are possible. There are implications for other settings. This article identifies relevant personality constructs and suggests avenues for further research.

The transition to college or university can lead to the challenge of adapting to a new setting. Homesickness has been frequently investigated as a potential negative consequence of relocation. This study analyzed the role of multiple place attachment in the development of homesickness among university students. The study used a multicausal framework. Situational, personality, and environmental psychological variables were considered. Different factors of a person's personality were associated with vulnerability to homesickness. In addition, multiple place attachment and vulnerability to homesickness impacted the homesickness felt by students.

Despite the negative psychological effects associated with the transition to university, little is known about the relationship between homesickness and family functioning. One hundred first-year university students completed a questionnaire incorporating the Dundee Relocation Inventory
(Fisher & Hood, 1987) measure of homesickness, and a measure of family functioning. A high level of homesickness was reported among students, with 18% of the variance in homesickness scores accounted for by family cohesion and chronological age. Implications for further research
are discussed within the context of an unambiguous operationalization of homesickness and its effects.

The current study investigated the potential of extracurricular involvement during the first year of college to attenuate depressive symptoms via decreases in homesickness among underrepresented (i.e., first generation, underrepresented ethnic/racial minority, and low income) students attending an elite, predominantly White institution (PWI). Participants were 340 students ( M age = 18.11, SD = .37). Extracurricular involvement, homesickness, depressive symptoms, and demographic information were self-reported during the fall and spring semesters. Results indicated that extracurricular involvement was negatively associated with depressive symptoms in the fall of underrepresented students' first year of college. In the spring semester, the association between homesickness and depressive symptoms was mediated by decreases in homesickness. Findings suggest extracurricular participation may facilitate psychologically healthy adjustment to PWIs among underrepresented students.
