This text intends to approach the question of sexual identity as it has been defined in queer theory, and particularly in Judith Butler's work. The notion of performativity, closely related to a conception of the social as an open field of power relations where all identity is a contingent and precarious stabilization, leads to a politicization of identity that implies a second step further from its denaturalization. Identity is the place from which we can articulate a resistance politics, and its open and incomplete character is what allows its resignification.
Identity conflicts pose a series of problems to contemporary liberal-democratic societies. We deal with claims to the recognition of collective identities. The constitutional State is bound to take these requests for recognition seriously and it must guarantee a politics of consideration of cultural differences. The constitutional State must, at the same time, protect integrity and freedom of individuals, ensuring the possibility of being able to live in the world of their culture, the possibility of taking a critical attitude towards this culture, the possibility of breaking with it. The legal coexistence with equal rights for forms of life implies the mutual respect of the different cultural memberships that form own identity. The recognition of equal dignity requires inclusive social relations, which are established through the communicative discourse and which develop in the public political space only through dialogical confrontation.

Many postmodern authors have claimed the dissolution of identity due to the multiplicity of personal relationships, to the variety of experiences or to the huge social changes in process. Nonetheless, I argue that, in spite of not being possible to sustain an essentialist conception of the subject, there are many elements that preclude an absolute dissolution of identity, anchoring the subject to a certain personal identity, but in a problematic, conflictive, and changing way. Furthermore, the dissolution of identity would not necessarily be beneficial for subjects nor groups, as long as the demand of interaction rights comes close to the maintaining of acknowledgeable identities. The problem would rather be the difficulty to accede to valuable identities in the prevailing life conditions, making difficult to produce positive self-discourses, and thus generalizing processes of identity 'fragilization.'

Is the 21st century the Chinese century? Westernization has changed nearly all facets of life in China, except for politics (Wu, 2009). This has created mass-confusion, enthusiasm, rebellion, romanticism, and idealism. The 1990s manufacturing industries continued to dominate the acceleration of consumerism in the 21st century and created, more than ever, a bizarrely giant, abstract world of identity that is self-created and sustained. This paper examines the politics of abstract desire, hyper-consumerism, and the notion of fantasy in the Chinese fashion industry. Today, hundreds of giant "hyper-malls" found all over China are connected to the distribution of fake "stuff." These commercial emblems have become an integral part of China's visual and social landscape. The marketplace of fake goods using Western brand images (e.g. logos) has grown for centuries to become an abstract superstructure of falsely branded lifestyles and design integrity. The global rise of hyper-consumerism gave China the ultimate opportunity to create a new identity for itself while importing the dream of luxury: The Buying Power. This paper focuses on abstracting the notion of hyper-consumerism and interrogating the relationship between visual advertisement, its materiality, and its representation in the global marketplace. How does advertising contribute to the production of consumer goods? Can we create a cyclical vision for new materials? How is the value of luxury created, displaced, transformed, and consumed through space and time?

ABSTRACT Formation of the civil nation is the most important task for any state which is related to all-civil identity. Russia faces serious ethnocultural problems connected to the formation of both linguistic identity and civil identity. At the theoretical level, this research investigates the question of important factors of balanced language policy in the multinational states and the preservation of language identity. The linguistic dimension of globalization takes into account the constructive language policy with regard to languages of national minorities and destructive forms of language interaction caused by economic and political dependence on more developed states.

Introduction: The development of adolescents living outside the environment of their families and residing in institutional shelters presents peculiar characteristics in the interactions established in their daily lives and the constitution of their identities. Erikson's psychosocial theory studies identity formation, observing exploration and commitment. Identity status can be classified as identity diffusion, foreclosure, moratorium, and identity achievement. Objective: To evaluate identity status of adolescents living in institutional shelters. Methods: Eighty-seven adolescents living in institutional shelters (age 12–17) individually responded to the Extended Objective Measure of the Ego Identity Status II (EOMEIS II). The data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics which included the following variables: gender, age range, schooling, and time of sheltering. Results: There was a prevalence of the identity diffusion status in both genders, regardless of the length of schooling and despite the time of sheltering. There were differences in the results considering age range (p = 0,033).Conclusion: Older adolescents showed greater losses in identity development, with more negative and immature states of identity, indicative of poor preparation for leaving the institution (at age 18).

AbstractIdentity has become a key construct in applied linguistics over the past 30 years, as more and more researchers have heeded Norton Peirce's (1995: 12) call for 'a comprehensive theory of social identity that integrates the language learner and the language learning context'. In this article, my aim is to discuss what I see as issues arising in identity research in applied linguistics. I start with a brief consideration of why identity has become so central in applied linguistics, before discussing the poststructuralist model of identity which has been adopted by the vast majority of researchers. I then move to consider three more substantive issues: (1) the potential benefits of a more psychological angle when most language and identity research tends to be predominantly social; (2) the importance of clarifying the interrelationship between individual agency and social structures in language and identity research; and (3) the potential benefits of including a socioeconomic stratification and social class angle in research which tends to prime identity politics (identity inscriptions such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, nationality and language), over the material conditions of life.
