Managers need to periodically evaluate any exchange partner to decide whether to continue or dissolve the exchange tie, but doing so can be challenging because of causal ambiguity: it can be difficult to attribute organizational performance to any specific underlying factor. One way managers may evaluate their exchange partners is by observing the performance trajectories of competitors who rely on the same exchange partners. We propose a theory of vicarious performance feedback and test it in the context of Formula One motor racing. We find that a firm building a Formula One racing car is more likely to end an exchange relationship with an engine supplier after that supplier's other customers experience an episode of poor performance relative to their historic track record. In line with an attention-based view of the firm, this behavior occurs when the firm's own performance is below its aspiration level. This work extends our understanding of how managers use vicarious learning to supplement their direct experience when evaluating their exchange partners, expands our thinking about network dynamics by showing how network neighbors' experiences can influence tie decisions made within a dyad, and contributes to the cognitive foundations of problemistic search by showing how external information is integrated into managers' responses to their own firm's underperformance.

This dissertation consists of three experimental studies that aim at contributing to a better understanding of behavior within contractual relationships—in particular, if information asymmetries, incentive issues and a lack of formal institutions make exchange more difficult and risky. Recent theoretical attempts to understand the dynamics of technological innovation have been based predominantly on the theory of localized knowledge spillover which sees technological innovation as the result of inter-firm interactions in the process of industrial clustering. This study introduces a new analytical framework that goes beyond inter-firm knowledge exchange and highlights the significance of the strategies and selectivity of both the state and firms to understand the dynamics of technological innovation in a transitional economy such as China. A comparative study on the strategies and selectivity of central government, local government, and individual firms in both Shanghai and Shenzhen, the two key city-regions in China, has found that difference in the degree of state-firm strategic coordination- or the dynamic process in which firms' innovation-related strategies are coordinated with the "strategic selectivity" of the central and/or local governments- is a significant factor explaining the regional variation in technological innovation. The Chinese experience demonstrates that the uneven growth of technological innovation has been contingent upon how the state builds a favorable institutional structure and market environment to stimulate, encourage, and support firms' innovative activities and how firms actively respond to the institutional environment created by the state. PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide managers with a critical insight into the relationship between the benefits of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems implementation and the impacts on firm performance of supply chain management (SCM).Design/methodology/approachThis study proposes a structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the relationship between ERP benefits and SCM performance. Hypotheses derived from the key benefits of adopting ERP system and related SCM practices presented by previous authors. An empirical survey is conducted to collect data from Taiwanese IT companies listed in the Taiwan Stock Exchanges on several aspects of firm competences and supply chain performance that adopted ERP systems and/or SCM systems.FindingsThe results confirm the operational, tactical, and strategic benefits of ERP for the firm performance of SCM in the internal and external business processes, customer service, and cost management, except for the strategic benefits of ERP are not significant predictors of SCM performance in the external business process. Furthermore, responses show that ERP implementations in these Taiwanese companies have a significant impact on other companies, both small and medium‐size enterprise (SME), within the global supply chain.Originality/valueThis study extends research efforts concerning the relationship between ERP benefits and SCM performance, which the unequivocally positive results are not surprising, yet differ from most of other studies. This fundamental framework is expected not only to aid managers to make better decisions on how they cultivate specific SCM competences but also to conclude that future research can extend the focus to the impact on SCM competences of the aid of external tools such as supplier/customer relationship management, and internet‐based collaborative commerce systems.

The aim of the work is to analyze and generalize the existing scientific approaches and substantiate the mechanisms of formation of the logistics innovation system of the pharmaceutical company, which is the most important condition for creating modern effective domestic drugs under optimal use of resources and time.Materials and methods. Studies were conducted using databases on the Internet: the State Expert Center, the Ukrainian Patent Office, scientific and metric databases. It has used retrospective, logical, graphic research methods, content analysis.Results. The relevance of the implementation of the logistics concept of innovation management in domestic pharmaceutical companies is substantiated. A key aspect of this concept is the integration of individual parts of the innovation process through the maximum use of information exchange between participants in this process, active innovation, use of existing and creation of new knowledge, which become the main asset of innovation-oriented pharmaceutical company. The essence of the logistics innovation system of a pharmaceutical company is determined, the model of interrelations within the open logistics innovation system of a pharmaceutical company is substantiated. It is proved that with the help of a logistics innovation system it is possible to carry out planning, management, actualization of creation and implementation of innovative medicines at the optimal level of used resources and time for the implementation of relevant innovation projects. It is determined that the logistics innovation system of a pharmaceutical company is related to the management of incoming information and innovation flow (results of basic and applied research, data on clinical and preclinical study of medicines, pharmaceutical development), internal information and innovation flow (information exchange in the internal environment - resource, scientific and informational, organizational, personnel component), the initial information and innovation flow (information for government agencies, consumers, suppliers, the public, organizations interested in using the research results). These flows are integrated and relate to various aspects of the company's innovation.Conclusions. Thus, in order to intensify and activize innovation in domestic pharmacy, it is promising to expand the scope of logistics methods for the development and implementation of innovative medicines. The aim of this study was to describe experiences of peer support among mothers of children with congenital heart defects. Ten mothers were interviewed through a semi-structured approach and interviews were analyzed with systematic text condensation. The respondents established various channels used for peer support and navigated between the channels depending on what type of information or support they needed. Through the channels, they found peers they developed strong friendships with and who they relied on for emotional support. Communicating with peers involved the reciprocal exchange of unique emotional support between peers who understand each other as well as the exchange of information derived from their collective knowledge, and thus, difficult to find without the help of peers. The findings illustrate the potential strengths of establishing reliable collaboration and liaisons between clinical units and peer support networks.

In den letzten Jahren wurden verstärkt börsennotierte Unternehmen, wie Wirecard oder ProSieben, Opfer von Leerverkaufsattacken, wodurch diese massive Kurseinbrüche innerhalb kürzester Zeit erlitten. Die Arbeit untersucht solche Attacken umfassend anhand des geltenden Kapitalmarktrechts und leistet einen gewichtigen Beitrag zur Beantwortung der komplexen und bislang nur fragmentarisch behandelten Frage, wie es Unternehmen selbst möglich ist, auf solche Angriffe effektiv zu reagieren und welche Maßnahmen im Vorfeld zu treffen sind. Hierzu werden einzelne Praxisfälle ausgewertet, wobei vor allem die Informationspolitik der Unternehmen im Fokus steht.

Quantitative research in the Social Sciences heavily relies on survey and statistical data. While researchers often put a lot of effort in generating such data, the incorporation and reuse of existing data on the web is far behind its potential. The lack of reuse can be attributed to various deficits in terms of library services, in particular, common exchange formats, annotations with metadata or standard approaches for integrating and merging data sets as well as the lack of an easy approach for searching data records and a lack of publicly available data sets. To overcome such problems which in the past have already been addressed by libraries, we propose a framework for seeking, merging, integrating and aggregating distributed statistical and survey data based on open semantic formats. We present a first prototype implementation as show case for the framework and highlight the benefits for social scientists. (author's abstract)

Digital Libraries currently face the challenge of integrating many different types of research information (e.g. publications, primary data, expert's profiles, institutional profiles, project information etc.) according to their scientific users' needs. To date no general, integrated model for knowledge organization and retrieval in Digital Libraries exists. This causes the problem of structural and semantic heterogeneity due to the wide range of metadata standards, indexing vocabularies and indexing approaches used for different types of information. The research presented in this paper focuses on areas in which activities are being undertaken in the field of Digital Libraries in order to treat semantic interoperability problems. We present a model for the integrated retrieval of factual and textual data which combines multiple approaches to semantic interoperability und sets them into context. Embedded in the research cycle, traditional content indexing methods for publications meet the newer, but rarely used ontology-based approaches which seem to be better suited for representing complex information like the one contained in survey data. The benefits of our model are (1) easy re-use of available knowledge organisation systems and (2) reduced efforts for domain modelling with ontologies. (author's abstract)
