AbstractPreviously unpublished, "From the Body Politic to the National Interest" was presented at the Mellon Symposium in Historical Anthropology at California Institute of Technology in May 1987. We are publishing it in the Journal of Historical Sociology for the first time to honor Philip Corrigan's memory. The essay was an attempt to expand upon arguments in Philip Corrigan and Derek Sayer, The Great Arch: English State Formation as Cultural Revolution (1985) under two main rubrics: (1) "routines and rituals of rule" and (2) "regulated representations and the making of 'the' public." In both cases we went beyond our treatment of these topics in The Great Arch, to which this paper should be seen as a supplement.
The paper presents results of the experimental study on the government's remembrance policy, attitudes towards it, and the influence of remembrance narratives. it discusses individual differences of participants on three different grounds: (1) interest in history or politics, and level of historical knowledge, (2) features of cognitive motivation measured by the need for closure questionnaire: preference of order, desire for predictability, discomfort with ambiguity, closed mindedness and decisiveness, and (3) response to the presented narrative, including inspired emotions and an assessment of a story. Collected data and research observations offer an interesting and valuable insight into relationships between various factors and citizen's support for the remembrance policy. They also lead the team to formulate three conclusions which may be used to develop theoretical understandings of this aspect of politics within political science and related disciplines.

The Indonesian Patent Law, which was first drafted in 1989, is quite a controversial. As a legal instrument, the Patent Law strongly reflects the monopolistic character. In fact, it raises strong resistance from the community. The cultural values of mutual cooperation become the argument for rejection and at the same time concern related to the promoting of individualistic values and culture. The problem is, as a country that projects industrialisation as the backbone of the economy, the existence of the Patent Law becomes a necessity. The Patent Law is believed to be the driving force of the industry through technological inventions. The conflict between values of the people's aspirations and the pragmatic policies of the government needs to be compromised and harmonized properly. This research is important to revisit the constellation of politics and legal policy in the establishment of the 1989 Patent Law. The research method is normative and analyze based on the perspective of responsive legal theory and the welfare state. The result of research shows that the preparation of the Patent Law has succeeded in harmonizing substantive patent norms with national interest. The politics of patent law has become the strategy in realizing national goals to build economic power through industrialisation based on technology. This rationality justifies the policy of the need for Indonesia to have a Patent Law in favor of national interests to support industry and economic development.

Political participation of women has improved significantly in many western democracy settings; in Asian countries however, women are still left behind in terms of political participation. This article explores political participation of women in a gender-segregated society where women have disproportionate social status in a strongly patriarchal culture and political system. Femininity, political socialization, political interest, political efficacy, and patriarchal political culture were taken as predictors to assess the political participation of women. Structured interview schedules were administrated to 414 women voters from two randomly selected Tehsils, i.e. Jhang and Gujar Khan, of the Punjab Province in Pakistan. Data from the interviews were processed using Stepwise Multiple Linear Regression. The results revealed that predictors explained 58.3% of the variance in the political participation of women voters in Punjab. However, two constructs of femininity: morality and loyalty were not loaded in the model. The dominant, socially designed attributes that women should possess in Pakistani society are childbearing and rearing, love and care for parents/husband, homemaking, submissiveness, passivity, and dependence. The home/private sphere becomes the ideal, normative space for women to operate. On the other hand, men are characterized by decision making, production, independence, assertiveness, violence, and wider interaction. Thus, men are associated with the public and the public sphere. These feminine & masculine ideals are the basis of social practices and social relations in Pakistani society. These are internalized, taken for granted, and embedded into the culture, social structure, and social organization of Pakistani society.

The background of this research is the support of the people of Yogyakarta to the sultan to lead Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. This paper is aimed at examining the relationship between a king and the community in the democracy era. The cases examined specifically in this study were the case of the proposed law of Yogyakarta in the Sutet region, and the ore mining case in Kulonprogo. Research was conducted qualitatively by collecting data through documentation, observation and interview. Informant retrieval technique is done by cluster technique. This research is analyzed by rational choice theory which assumes that people are always trying to optimize the choices that bring benefits (Mallarangeng 2008: 9, Kuper & Kuper 2000: 895). The study had various findings, such that public support of the king could not be explained by the concept of Javanese power and that logical consideration in the form of the interest proximity of each group becomes a concept of public support against the king. When the group interests are closer, they show their support, but, when the gap becomes wider, they readily change their support without fear of karma.

The rise of China can be perceived either as a threat or as an opportunity to and for the US, mostly depending on US grand foreign policy interests and its related strategies. If the US feels comfortable living in a multipolar world in which it is considered to be an equal among the major powers, China is more likely to be perceived as a partner. However, if the goal of US foreign policy is to strengthen its position as the sole superpower or even as a hyper-power, and does not choose to recognise other major countries, then the rise of China will be perceived as a threat. Based on this underlying assumption, this article seeks to examine the exact interests of the US: Is it threatened by the rise of China or is it not? This article starts by explaining the grand theories and relating it to the research question. The next explanation examines the economic ties between the two countries. The final consideration is the possibility of military conflict given several recent occurrences, such as the Taiwan and South China Sea (SCS) dispute. This article concludes that the rise of China will threaten the interests of the US. However, it will not necessarily lead to war between them.
