The paper estimates the impact of macroeconomic supply- and demand-side determinants of tourism, one of the largest components of services exports globally, and the backbone of many smaller economies. It applies the gravity model to a large dataset comprising the full universe of bilateral tourism flows spanning over a decade. The results show that the gravity model explains tourism flows better than goods trade for equivalent specifications. The elasticity of tourism with respect to GDP of the origin (importing) country is lower than for goods trade. Tourism flows respond strongly to changes

The roots of tourism can be traced back to antiquity. Tourism is an interesting phenomenon, an economic activity involving trips that tourists take for a specific purpose to meet their tourist needs. Each country's policy should be aimed at the development of the tourism sector alongside other sectors of the socio-economic framework, in parallel and without favouring separate industries. Tourism has a special place in a country's economic structure. In today's globalized world, it is of great importance for settlements, regions, countries and the world economic system. Good connections and relations between managers, governments and individual organizations, especially in the tourism sector, lead to increased revenues for the country's economy. There are a number of examples of how, on the international stage, economically highly developed countries not only have enormous potential but also manage to exercise power through tourism. The examples of the last year are many, but it is not the subject of this paper. Keywords: tourism, destination, geography, geopolitics, globalization, economyJEL classification: F02, F14, L83, L98

International Tourism reconceptualizes the local and the global, avoiding such crude oppositions as centre v periphery, modern v traditional and North v South, demonstrating that the local cannot be understood without the global, and that the global can never be isolated from the regional setting within which it operates.

Describes how, in response to a weakened market share, the USA sponsored the White House conference on travel and tourism which was held in October 1995. A highly successful event, the conference proposed strategies and tactics which encourage international travel to the USA. Suggests that, on the one hand, this conference points to future increased competition which the USA will exert within the international tourism industry. On the other hand, believes the findings and suggestions of the conference may be useful to the European travel and tourism industry as it forges tactics for its own future growth.
