This introductory essay illustrates the context, clarifies the relevance, and outlines the key themes of this Special Issue on "Latin American Perspectives on Datafication and Artificial intelligence". It starts pointing out that so far, the engagement of Latin American scholarship in the exploration of data technologies and the rise of intelligent systems has been limited. However, it is argued, Latin American traditions in both research and praxis have much to offer to our understanding of the evolution of the information ecosystem. We propose to map different Latin American perspectives on datafication and AI using an analytical matrix structured along two theme lines, that is three building blocks (infrastructure, imaginaries, practices) and three interpretative lenses (decoloniality and race, feminist theory, pluriversal thinking). Then, we reflect on two procedural issues: the need to consider this Special Issue as a conversation-starter, and the importance of having this conversation in multiple languages and in an open access format. We conclude providing an outline of the various contributions of the Special Issue. Authors address algorithms from the south and coloniality, datafication and corruption, data activism, AI and journalism, and platform labor in the context of Latin America and drawing on Latin American theoretical contributions

In this article, the author describes the importance of the State intervention in the economy, with a special mention of the philosophical foundations of the concept of intervention. In order to do that, the variable of neoinstitutionalization is used to contemplate the processes of intervention and an analysis of the reform of State is provided, with a particular focus on Mexico's case. The intervention of State is justified in terms of the market and the society without meaning an apology of it. Adapted from the source document.
J. S. Mill addressed for the first time the legitimacy of interventions in foreign wars in his The Spanish Question. I begin by explaining the historical context of that text and its thesis about the First Carlist War. The main section of the article is devoted to the principles on war interventionism stated in The Spanish Question and to show that Mill endorsed those principles with rather few modifications henceforth. As a concluding remark I hold that the Concert of Europe established by 1815 Congress of Vienna is the adequate background to appreciate Mill's ideas as a realist project of moralizing the international balance of power. The following text analyzes the political process in San Francisco Oxtotilpan, an Indian community in the State of Mexico. To this effect, it presents a brief ethnographic description of the community, with its social and the most important cultural characteristics followed by an examination of the system for religious appointments and its relevance to the political process of the community, since one of the principle differences between politics in the Indian world and the cross breed is the intervention of a religious cosmology in the political process. Armed intervention under the auspices of the UN in dealing with international conflicts was a rarely used practice during the Cold War, as it undermined national sovereignty. Criticism that treated them as covert imperial interference enabling expansion of the great powers delegitimized them in the eyes of the international community. Meanwhile, the radicalization of the confrontation between the USSR and the US blocked any decision by the Security Council, as both held a veto. However, with the collapse of the USSR and the arrival of the age of globalization, recourse to the right of humanitarian intervention acquired new relevance. Adapted from the source document.
