Based on the existing literature, the study tests the relevance of electoral and intra-party alliance concerns on party organization change for the AKP in its 2017 District Congress. We believe that both the electoral and intra-party alliance concerns the party faced in 2017, make it a suitable case to test the basic hypothesis of the study. The dataset used in the analysis consists of secondary data on 971 districts present in Turkey. District presidency change is employed as the key independent variable to estimate organization change. The result of the logistic regression indicates that the effect of increasing percentage of swing voters and members of the former alliance, despite being valid, have moderate positive effects on the AKP's decision to change its organization. The insignificancy of the electoral safety of the party in the district reveals that in 2017 the AKP changed its organization regardless of the nature of the electoral competition it faces. Interestingly, results indicate that socioeconomic development and ethnic presence in districts are also significant factors that constrain organization change in the AKP. Based on these results we suggest that change in party organization becomes a more difficult issue in parties with strong clientelistic networks where political parties built electoral support through the conditional distribution of resources to voters. Similarly, ethnicity also acts as a constraint due to the peculiarity of the relations political parties develop with these groups. As such clientelism and ethnicity seem to have constraining effects on the abilities of parties to change their organizations. The results highlight the necessity of further research to generalize the validity of the effectiveness of clientelism and ethnic groups on political parties' organization change on different settings.
; Increasing relations between Turkey and the United States during the Cold War period, spawned a deep alliance between Turkey and the United States in a degree that, politically, Turkey never involved in a such alliance with any other power before. Close relations between Turkey and the United States developed fast at the beginning of the Cold War according to Soviet pressures and bilateral interests. But those smooth relations deteriorated when the U.S pursued classical Cold War policies which did not meet Turkey's expectations and Cyprus issue turned the difficulties in a crisis between Turkey and the United States. At the end of the Cold War, the status of the Turkish-American relations were widely discussed. Turks and Americans tried to figure out that, would these two states choose to go on their allied relations? In post-Cold War period neither United States nor Turkey wanted to decrease the relations, in reverse, they wanted to fix and improve the relations respecting their political priorities. In this essay, I tried to go back to near past and reargue the establishment of the Turkish-American alliance to help today's unclearness.

Alliances are important elements of international relations and politics. Many examples in history have been observed although alliance theories have been proposed and gained attention following World War II. Alliance theories are dominated to a great extent by realist and neoreliast schools of thought. Alliance is basicly known as a response to real or perceived threat to the security of the nation. Alliances may be established either between two states or between groups of states depending upon the circumstanes. They may be formal or informal. Iran and Turkey have been neighbours for centuries and are important actors in Middle East. They both have searched for power and influence in their region. Their mutual relations have fluctuated depending upon domestic affairs and international politics. The end of II. World War, the most devastating war in human history, marked the beginning of a new era in international arena named as "Cold war". The international political system was divided into two camps under the leadership of United States of America and Soviet Union. United States of America represented the democratic, liberal western bloc while the Soviets represented the socialist eastern bloc. This bipolar system eventually urged countries to make alliances with either of the blocks. Cold war lasted until 1990 when Soviet Union and the Warshaw pact disintegrated which marked the fall of Communist ideology. Iran and Turkey, with similar and reasonable drives preferred to make alliances with western block. Their main concern was to protect their territorial integrity and defend their countries against overt Soviet threat. This threat had historical roots as well as the diplomatic and military initatives taken by USSR during the years of II. World War. During the cold war period both Iran and Turkey suffered from isolation as an inevitable consequence of extreme dependence on west and in particular to USA. Their experience derived from the events and relations of the cold war, Iran and Turkey prompted to revise their international relations and follow relatively multidimensional policies. The detant policy among the two blocks in the following years of cold war faciliated such a limited shift in the international relations of Turkey and Iran. The relations of Iran with USA and other western countries have influnced her relations with Turkey while the reverse is also valid. This thesis aims to analyze the reasons of the alliances of Iran and Turkey during the cold war, pros and cons of their alliances, the events of the cold war, and results of their choices.Search of the literature has revealed not enough studies comparing the two nations during cold war.In that respect contribution to the literature is expected.

; The Second World War ended in favour of the USA and by dropping the atomic bomb the USA showed the whole world that it was the sole superpower. Faced with the Soviet threat, Turkey made an alliance with the United States to prevent Soviet policy expanding from the Black Sea and the Straits to the Mediterranean. Refraining from the red threat and the expansionist policy of the Soviet Union, in 1945 ,the USA started supporting Turkey militarily and economically to prevent the Soviet's expansionist efforts across the ocean. This alliance, which started in 1945, continues with ups and downs until today. This thesis will include the Turkey-USA relations between the years 1945-1960, which covers a part of the Cold War period. The first part of this study will consist of getting a general understanding of the process from the beginning of the Turkish-US relations until 1945. Also, the general framework of the economic and political developments in the world during the Second World War will be drawn, and the mutual interaction of the domestic and foreign policy of Turkey and the USA at that time will be conveyed. In addition to that, the general economic and political framework of Turkey and the USA before 1945 will be drawn and their internal and external dynamics will be included. In this context, the relations of both states with the USSR will also be mentioned. The second part of the research will discuss the economic, political, and military interactions of Turkey-USA relations between the years 1945-1960. It will be discussed how Turkey-US relations interact with the developments in the domestic politics of them both, and there will be a part dedicated to the cultural and political spread of American hegemony. The third part will discuss the 1960 military coup in Turkey and the alliance relationship between Turkey and the USA will be questioned. This study will evaluate the Turkey-US alliance in its military, political and economic terms in chronological order, based on the idealism and realism theories from the international relations literature. In the evaluation, special attention will be paid to the conflict of interest in the Turkey-US alliance throughout the prism of parliamentary reports/minutes, newspaper reports, confidential documents, letters, and foreign policy reports of the above-mentioned period. While the relations between Turkey and the US seem like simple bilateral relations, both in the past and today, Turkish-Russian (former USSR) and USA-Russia relations have had a significant effect on their shaping.

--- The military relations between the United States of America (USA) and Saudi Arabia are always remarkable in terms of continuity and depth. Washington administration has been in contact with the Kingdom of Riyadh since 1932, when Saudi Arabia was established. Although bilateral relations have begun on an economy basis, in the following years they have turned into a wider framework of alliance, including military alliance. However, it is difficult to make this intensive cooperation to American Congress and American society because of the deep differences in the form of government and socio-cultural characteristics between the US and Saudi Arabia. It isinevitable for the US to disclose these relations at a legitimate ground and for the public to receive Congressional support. The purpose of the study, which was contextualised in the context of the Copenhagen School'ssecuritization theory; by analyzing the US military relations with Saudi Arabia, it is to see how Washington has legitimized this relationship in the changing times.

; In this paper, it will be analyzed the development of Turkish-American relations within the context of basic goals and motivations of both sides from the Ottoman period to the year of 1960. Mainly, it will be focused on the trends of cooperation and the aspects of problematic issues. In an hictorical analysis, the basic attempt is to clarify the continuity and change within the development of bilateral relations. The factors that lead to change and the main patterns enduring from the past will be helpful to understand how they shape the expectations about the future. While the relations begin with commercial basis in the Ottoman period of 19th century, proceeding with stabilization period in Atatürk era, after the World War II it is refounded by the new framework of strategic cooperation and security alliance. When it comes to the year of 1960, Turkish-American relations regarding the security and economic interests the dependency was occured unfavor to Turkey.

; Aim of this study is not only to reveal the alliance relations where Turkey is involved in the pacts owing to foreign policies that she followed during the Cold War era, but also to argue the success / fail in establishing and managing these relations as well as analysing how the problems, faced by Turkey, underwent a change against similar problems in the past in terms of today's foreign policy and to set forth the aspect of the alliance relations of Turkey in the future with a historical perspective. During the Cold War era, where bipolar new world system is prevailed, USA and USSR have conducted an ideological war by establishing a coalition and alliances with the other states in order to expand their hegemony areas. The struggle for power between USA and USSR has not only been limited for the Europe but also spread to the Middle East, Asia and Africa. Conflicts and disagreements appeared in the international arena has forced Turkey to make a selection in the bipolar system of Cold War era. Turkey has adopted Western oriented policy since 1950 because of her economic and security concerns. However, together with the Cyprus problem, relations with the West began to be reviewed and serious confidence crises were gone through. Finally, with the US embargo, relations reached to the point of mutual showdown. After the 1980 coup, a unilateral policy was not followed like in previous times, on the contrary, a multidimensional foreign policy was pursued which was balanced both with the East and the West. Policies developed by Turkey during the Cold War era were affected by the cyclical changes and differed in terms of preserving national interests. Pacts established in line with these purposes did not last long. Under the Cold War era circumstances, it can be said that Turkey has played an active and determinant role regarding the international problems owing to her international cooperation based upon the increasing visibility and efficiency.

; Iran was the biggest supporter of the Assad administration, which was in a difficult situation as a result of the Arab spring events spreading to Syria in March 2011. Although Iran has a 30-year history of alliance with Syria, its support has been far beyond this alliance, Iran has seen the survival of the Syrian regime as its own security issue. During this process, Iran provided military, diplomatic and economic support to the Syrian government; It has mobilized all its resources for the survival of the administration. Even in the time of Rouhani, who was known for his moderate policies, the lack of softening in Iran's Syria policy brought about the questioning of the foundations of bilateral relations. Although the main dynamic that determines Iran's Syria policy is strategic interests, the fact that the alliance relationship started after the 1979 Iranian Islamic Revolution has led to the need to research the dynamics that determine strategic interests. Because while pre-revolutionary Iran's interests were at odds with Syria, post-revolutionary conditions made it necessary for Iran to develop an alliance with Syria. This is related to the state and leader structure of the Islamic Republic established after the revolution. In this context, the aim of the study is to investigate how the Iran- Syria alliance relationship started and on what foundations it was built, and to examine the reflection of all these on the Arab Spring process. The study reads the subject from the perspective of neoclassical realism, which evaluates the foreign policies of states with their perceptions of leaders, and evaluates Iran's Syria policy with the characteristics and leadership structure of this state.

In the study it was found out that Cyprus, Havadis, Yenidüzen and Africa showed an opposition attitude towards the Republican Alliance, especially the ruling party leader President Erdoğan. Among these newspapers, it was seen that Cyprus, Havadis and Africa supported the Nation Alliance . The Star Kıbrıs newspaper, on the other hand, has shown a supportive attitude towards the Republic Alliance. Volkan newspaper, on the other hand, showed an equal attitude towards both alliances. The only newspaper supporting the HDP was the African newspaper. The fact that the newspapers Volkan and Star Kıbrıs did not include any news about the HDP is understood as an solely ideological attitude. İncelemeye alınan gazetelerden Kıbrıs, Havadis, Yenidüzen, Afrika gazetelerinin Cumhur İttifakı'na özellikle İktidar partisi lideri Erdoğan'a yönelik muhalif bir tutum sergiledikleri ortaya çıkmıştır. ; The aim of this study is to put forth that including military dimensions to Turkey's development of economic and political relations with Georgia and Azerbaijan in particular will contribute positively to regional security. Turkey, as a regional power, has been developing its economic and political relations with Georgia and Azerbaijan in particular. Turkey, beginning in the political and economic relations to be appropriate in the interest of all three countries, wants to move into the field of security; thus trying to make the South Caucasus "a security zone." In this way, Turkey tries to ensure a balance in the region against the Russian Federation and Armenia and also to establish an alliance against threats from the east. Turkey will also contribute to the preparation for the NATO membership of Azerbaijan and Georgia via transferring its acquired knowledge and experience to these countries.

; Towards the end of the Second World War, Turkey, who was confronted with land and military base demands of the Soviet Union, started to develop her relations with Western countries. The United States of America, who was developing new strategies against the Soviet Union after the war, decided to help Turkey because of her strategies and interests. First applications of these decisions were the Truman Doctrine (1947) and Marshall Plan (1948). Turkey took side with Western countries and decided to send troops to Korean War that began in 1950 and became a NATO member in 1952 with the support of the United States. After this date, NATO has become a very important milestone with regards to the Turkey-US relationship. After joining NATO, Turkey had closer relations with the US especially on security dimension. At the beginning, enforcement of conditions and framework of two countries' needs led to smooth bilateral relations. Later, serious problems arose because of the Cold War policies of the United States. Cold War strategic alliance era between the two countries began to be shaken by Cyprus issue. Due to attacks against the Turkish Cypriots, Turkey wanted to intervene to the island in 1964, but US opposed that intervention. US President Johnson's letter, which was sent on 5 June 1964, inflicted a heavy blow on the Turkey-US relations. Even if shaken relations were tried to be reconciliated with Defense and Cooperation Agreement in 1969, 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation and after that arms embargo imposed on Turkey brought relations to the breaking point. The resumption of relations between the two countries became possible with the disembargo in 1978 and signing of the Defense and Economic Cooperation Agreement in 1979. US's military presence in Turkey was also reconsidered by these agreements. Although there were some problems between two countries in the 1980s, a rapprochement period began. This study aims to examine Turkey-US relations during the Cold War Era and draw attention to significant disputes that emerged between two countries. Additionally, this study tries to reveal basic features of Turkey-US alliance during this period. In this regard, to what extent Turkey was under the influence of the United States is examined.

; Turkey-Israel relations, starting with Turkey's recognition of Israel as a sovereign state in 1949, have gained momentum since the early 1990s despite being fluctuant because of Israel's policies negatively affecting peace and stability in the Middle East. During the 1990s, the two countries' relations developed rapidly with a series of agreements, especially signed in 1996, and since then the relations have been multidimensional, including military, diplomatic, political, economic, and intelligence. In the following years, especially in the 2000s economic relations have increased remarkably. It is observed that the economic relations established between the two countries continue to be influenced by the political crises, notwithstanding the various political tensions between Turkey and Israel, especially after 2010 and onwards. The study dwells on the economy as an unchanging dynamic in the 1990s, when Turkey was in a strong strategic alliance with Israel, and in the 2000s when Turkey was experiencing some political crises with Israeli government. In this context, it is revealed that the determinations of economic rationality in Turkey-Israel relations are preliminary in every period and that the developments in trade and direct investment relations between the two countries continue to be effective in their own course independent of the fluctuations in the political conjuncture.

; In this study, Turkish-American relations in a period covering the years from 1694 to 1978 will be evaluated. After the Second World War, Turkey began to be threatened by the Soviet Union. Turkey intended to develop its relations with United States of America to seek support against the Soviet threat and to take its part in the new world order taking shape in the post-war era. 1947 was the year when a new era started in Turkish-American relations. A cooperation and assistance agreement was signed with USA. In 1952, Turkey and USA became alliance partners thanks to NATO membership. The 1950s were the golden age of Turkish-American relations, and Turkey adapted coherent policies with the US in every field. With the outbreak of Cyprus problem, Turkish-American relations began to regress, and Turkey's intervention to the island for rightful and legitimate reasons was interrupted by USA President Johnson's letter. Johnson letter was a breaking point in Turkish-American relations, and doubt about USA emerged for the first time. Following Johnson's letter, Turkish-American relations were inquired, and those previous agreements against Turkey were revised. Turkish-American relations were strained in Afyon crisis, and it was proposed to lay embargo on Turkey. In 1974, following the Second Landing in Cyprus Peace Operation, Turkey's intervention to the island was regarded as an invasion by USA, which subsequently laid arms embargo on Turkey. Between 1975 and 1978, Turkish-American relations reached breaking point, Turkey terminated JDC Agreement in return for the embargo and closed American bases. American embargo failed due to decisive attitude of Turkey protecting its national interests. After USA lifted the arms embargo in 1978, Turkish-American relations entered a new phase.

Before the Second World War, the measures taken against revisionist states in the Balkans were insufficient. Greece and Turkey who wanted to address this issue, signed a new treaty in 1938, in addition to cooperation arising from the expansion of the Pact in the 1930 Treaty of Friendship and the 1933 Sincere Agreement. As a security system with political and military dimensions, the treaty was the culmination of Turkish-Greek relations in the Ataturk period. According to the provisions added to the existing regulations, the soldiers of the state attacking the other state under the conditions would not pass through the other state's territory. If necessary, it would be countered with a gun and remain neutral. Thus, the two states strengthened the security of their lands against an attack from the middle of the Balkans. They would also prevent attempts to disturb each other's security or change their government on their land. The alliance regime that was established aimed not only to be suitable for the spirit of the Balkan Pact but also to develop this spirit. Sincere Agreement Pact and Balkan Pact were the results of Turkey's pacifism and Ataturk's far-sighted policy. The 1938 Additional Treaty, has been an extension and also the furthest point of his policy.
