; Peer reviewed
Includes bibliography. ; One of the most significant and yet least studied developments of late eighteenth and early nineteenth century Cape Town is the emergence and growth of a muslim community. So dramatic was this process, that by the end of the period of slavery, well over two thirds of the town's non-European population were considered to be members of this community. Yet this process has largely been regarded, in such studies as do exist, as one of only marginal significance to the unfolding pattern of struggles that characterise this turbulent and brutal period of Cape Town's history. This lack of serious research stems largely from the nature of prevailing conceptions, which have tended to characterise both Islam and the muslim community as ostensibly cultural phenomena; culture being defined in its narrowest sense. Denied its political and ideological significance, the process of Islamisation is reduced to the point where it is regarded only as a quaint and colourful anachronism, adding a touch of spice to the cosmopolitan nature of the town. This thesis, however, takes as its point of departure the rejection of the notion that the development of Islam in Cape Town can be meaningfully understood in these terms.

This paper examines the relationship between religion, ethnicity and politics in Cyprus during the Turkocratia (1571–1878), the period of Ottoman rule. Its major thesis is that in the pre-industrial framework of Ottoman rule in Cyprus neither religion nor ethnicity were major sources of conflict in a society composed of two ethnic groups (Greeks and Turks) and following two monotheistic faiths(Christianity and Islam) in marked contrast to the recent history of Cyprus. In broad outline it closely parallels Gellner's thesis (1983) that nationalism is a by-product of industrialization, extensive education literacy and geographical and social mobility, and it seeks to show that the major cleavages in Cyprus were mainly intraethnic rather than interethnic. ; peer-reviewed

Journal of Social, Political and Economic Studies, Summer 1985. ; Refereed Journal Article ; Perhaps no other area of Islamic economic thought has been more misunderstood than that concerning the role of the rate of interest. Any economic system concerned primarily with the welfare of the individual must not only encourage allocative efficiency, but~also promote economic growth if it is to avoid social injustice, economic stagnation and widespread unemployment. 1 The method of state allocation utilized in the eastern block countries is one' possible way of avoiding the widespread use of interest rates. Given that complete or near complete socialization of the means of production that this system requires is contrary to the individualistic moralistic philosophy of Islam, the Saudi government is, given its concern for the welfare of the economy, left with little choice but to somehow direct savings through the organized capital markets to the private sector.
