The Papacy is commonly assumed to be a reactionary institution; this assumption has shaped attitudes toward Pope John Paul II. In a series of interviews (N'ayez pas peur! Andre Frossard dialogue avec Jean Paul II, [Don't be Afraid: Andre Frossard's Dialogue with Jean Paul II], Paris, 1982), the Pope reveals ideas inconsistent with this assumption, though consistent with earlier statements. John Paul's views, founded in Thomism, reject both the East & the West as irreligious societies, & even suggest that God may be more easily found by a person in a totalitarian society; they draw a contrast between permissiveness & liberty, & emphasize religious rather than political concerns. W. H. Stoddard.
One of America's grandest mansions when completed in 1788, the house at 52 Power Street was home first to John Brown, a businessman, patriot, politician, China Trade pioneer and slave trader who participated in the debates and practices that shaped the new nation and the world. It was the home of John Brown's daughters and their families; the winter residence of the elegant Gammell family during the second half of the nineteenth century; the formidable mansion of Providence utility, real estate and trolley mogul, Marsden Perry in the early twentieth century. Today this magnificent and elegant building serves as a place in which the public can learn about these men and women who helped to create Rhode Island's capital city. ; https://digitalcommons.ric.edu/smolski_images/1257/thumbnail.jpg
