The history of museums is closely connected not only with the history of collecting and collections, but also with the history of science and humanities. Collections and exhibitions reflect scientific theory and scholarly practice, and in turn shape them. Hence, museums transmit and disseminate, yet also produce knowledge. On the one hand, they visualise and stabilise orders of knowledge through assembling, classifying and fixing objects in exhibitions; on the other hand, new academic paradigms and political changes lead to rearrangements of facts and artefacts in museum storerooms and displays. This volume brings together case studies from various historical and cultural contexts that illuminate such dynamics. Its point of departure is transcultural collections and exhibitions such as cabinets of curiosities and ethnographic collections, whose attempts to inventorise and display the world testify to the desire for, but also the difficulties in establishing and maintaining orders of knowledge. A particular focus is on transformative moments in the history of museums, in particular on the early 1900s, when science and technology museums were established, and on more recent times, which have seen the refurbishment of numerous art and ethnographic museums.

The series MISCELLANEA MEDIAEVALIA was founded by Paul Wilpert in 1962 and since then has presented research from the Thomas Institute of the University of Cologne. The cornerstone of the series is provided by the proceedings of the biennial Cologne Medieval Studies Conferences, which were established over 50 years ago by Josef Koch, the founding director of the Institute. The interdisciplinary nature of these conferences is reflected in the proceedings. The MISCELLANEA MEDIAEVALIA gather together papers from all disciplines represented in Medieval Studies - medieval history, philosophy, theology, together with art and literature, all contribute to an overall perspective of the Middle Ages.

The article argues an extension of "intended applications" of present day radical constructivism to the domain of historical sciences. After a brief presentation of constructivism's core theory of "observing observations", a long exposition is undertaken in which central historical notions like "memory", ,,remembering" or ,,forgetting" are re-defined and adapted to the overall constructivist framework. Further extensions of the notion of memory to the societal level are made, for instance, the new notion of "politics of memory" will be introduced which, hopefully, will offer new insights into the interplay between the physical infrastructures of, horribile dictu, ,,information bases", ,,knowledge utilizations" and the steering mechanisms of societal sub-systems, primarily, but not exclusively, of the economic system. ; The article argues an extension of "intended applications" of present day radical constructivism to the domain of historical sciences. ; How many worlds of education are there? Many, according to the anthology of the Graduate Center International-vergleichende Forschung zu Bildung und Bildungspolitik im Wohlfahrtsstaat at Tübingen. Too many, if one reads some of the articles addressing the equality of opportunity for children, especially in Germany. On everyone's lips are the studies about educational systems from PISA, the OECD countries, and the Bertelsmann Foundation, but only the catchphrases are widely known. The book contains systematized introductions to educational research, supplemented by detailed data and practical examples. The internationally comparative analyses offer a wide variety and stimuli for future research. At the same time they show how closely education is entangled with the history and culture of societies and other political areas.

This paper analyses the concept of 'Volkskultur' (folk culture) as an invention of the 20th century, using perspectives from social history and the history of knowledge. It is demonstrated how 'Volkskultur' was constituted in the space between the poles of science, cultural policy, public discourse and popular practice, and how the concept was used as a symbolic resource. First, the disciplinary discourse of German-speaking European Ethnology (which grew out of 'Volkskunde') is explored in it's interdisciplinary relations and it's historical development. Second, conceptual proposals for the empirical study of the eld of 'Volkskultur' in the present are presented. Concluding, this article argues for a praxeological approach on the actors, social usages and political implications of 'Volkskultur'. ; This paper analyses the concept of 'Volkskultur' (folk culture) as an invention of the 20th century, using perspectives from social history and the history of knowledge. ; The study addresses two main issues. It enquires the impact of Franklin's invention on the perception of lightning risk and raises the question, how this invention modified the contemporaries' perception of themselves, their history and future. (i) The attempt of various projects and their promoters, the so called 'projectors' or 'Projektemacher', who attempted to anticipate the upcoming of thunderstorms in certain areas altogether by erecting a multitude of lightning rods, highlights their aim for governing nature. (ii) With respect to theological and aesthetical questions a modification of the perception of natural catastrophes can be identified, in which the negative interpretation of a natura lapsa is displaced by the optimistic perception of an oeconomia naturae. (iii) In numerous controversies the lightning rod achieves a political virility. The crucial question in these debates is whether the right and duty to protect one's life and belongings is to be assigned to the individual or to secular or ecclesiastic authorities. (iv) Referring to the association of electricity and vis vitalis which dates back to ancient world, the source and endpoint of life becomes a matter of interest and discussion: Apparent reanimations of dead bodys by means of electricity raise the question if the myth of Prometheus can be fulfilled by experimental science.

; This article sketches a conceptual history of modern society. With regard to the global economy, it distinguishes between a Malthusian phase of stagnation and a post-Malthusian phase of growth. Modelling the interdependence between politics and business, the main thesis is that the modern growth economy is a product of political constitutionalization. Drawing on the work by William Baumol, the article focuses on institutional incentives that foster investments in generating new knowledge.
