Augustus founded the principate as a system of acceptance in which the princeps rule had to be continually renewed in communication between princeps' and senate, the military, plebs urbana and provincial elites. This communication took place in all areas of culture, by giving and receiving honours as well as by collective practices and rituals. They define the monarchy as a personal relationship between the ruler as a patron and his following, the clientela. This connexion is expressed in the ancient term auctoritas, deeply rooted in Roman republican times. Auctoritas expresses a personal quality which governs all the princeps' conduct.
This paper traces the changes memorial culture went through in Roman Imperial times (from 44BC-AD337). Since Augustus, Roman emperors displayed and legitimised their own claim to power and rulership by either affirming (i.e. divinisation) or damning (damnatio)the memoria of their predecessor. In this process, the importance of the biopolitical component, that is the control of the dead emperors body, must be stressed. As the imperial funerals provided one of the first public appearances of the new emperor, they were of primary importance. Traian introduced a form of funeral in which the funus publicum of a former ruler was combined with his apotheosis – with the new emperor, and him alone, in charge of both acts of state. In the case of damned emperors, their body was of lesser importance, though sometimes subjected to dishonouring post-mortem punishment. Interestingly, it was possible to reverse the course of a damnatio and perform a consecration afterwards (i.e. after another candidate ascended to the throne), whereas consecrated emperors were exempt from all further criticism.
The ancient Rome's claim to naval power took an early outline, when its system of alliances was enlarged by several seaside towns and by using the foreign ships provided the republic with an access to the sea. Yet only the conflict with Carthage during the first Punic War demanded the construction of a roman armada and procured the open naval war. The naval battle of Mylae, in which Caius Duilius defeated the Carthage fleet, finally put an end to five unsuccessful years of battles ashore. Extuberantly did Rome celebrate this victory over Carthage and Duilius was granted the festivity of a triumph, which by adding the sobriquet navalis or maritimus indicated the exceptional importance of that victory. By ways of this maritime triumph the sea as a stage for virtus, fame and haul came into focus of the roman nobilis. On this account Duilius set the patterns for subsequent roman warlords wishing to triumph. Many of them were eager to follow suit, triumphantly presenting tropaia obtained at sea or acknowledging their gratitude to maritime deities by erecting temples and hallowing booties in their honour. Even Octavian did still choose Duilius as a model and ideal with reference to his own naval victories of Naulochos and Actium. Furthermore he constantly commemorated the first-ever naval triumph and warlord, thus causing this name to live through the ages, so that temporary Italian warships are actually named for him.
Pliny the Younger was, as well as most other members of the aristocracy of the early and high Roman Empire, a very politically active fi gure. Th is political existence was expressed through literary communication, which was, however, no compensation for an assumed depolitization of the ordo senatorius, but rather a means to an end for the political goals of the aristocracy. In Pliny's letters, we can witness this literary communication. It is apparent how he used the epistolographic literature in connection with his social network to further his career, promote friends, infl uence political decisions and propagate fundamental values and moral standards. Literature and politics were therefore inseparably connected to each other.
People live in cultural landscapes which they create and consistently change. In order to understand the entire process involved, it is essential to consider the fi ndings about the historical development of the region and its people for recent regional and future-oriented planning. Th e self-conception and self-awareness of a regional population is based on its culturally shaped surroundings. For example, a castle, a monastery, a medieval city ensemble or even prehistorical discoveries can become the central point of regional self-conception though the building may have lost its former signifi cance a long time ago. In this essay, the relation between the cities of a region around 1500 and the identity of the people who live there will be discussed. Th e region is called Franconia, now a part of Northern Bavaria and Northeast Baden-Württemberg. Up to 1806 it never was under a united leadership: Kings, Bishops, Princes, Knights and Imperial Cities had their separate domains. Th is kind of plurality created a huge diversity in the cultural landscape – up to present days. Th e regional historian can contribute to this whole process of regionalization and identifi cation with his/her research. He/She is part of a team consisting of archaelogists, geographers, political scientists, economists and social scientists. It is not his/her goal to continue with an archaic and outdated local historical approach but rather to implement his/her entire range of methodologies concentrated on a small region. Th e regional historian's guideline is: "Within boundaries boundless opportunities.» Th is approach can give a detailed description of the historical development of a certain region and its population over centuries. With the diminishing focus on national history, the regional historian is able to pursue a 'histoire totale' for a certain region. By using this methodological approach, the historian off ers a template of historical research which could also be used by other European regions.
; Th e epitaphios logos played an integral part in the construction of an idealised self-image of democratic Athens (5th / 4th century BC). Th is paper shows that two famous examples of this rhetorical genre, the orations of Pericles (in the History of the Peloponnesian War by Th ucydides) and Socrates (in the Platonic dialogue Menexenos), generally regarded as affi rmative, are very critical of the institution and the democratic polis as such.
