This research is part of sentencing studies, that is, the process by which judges punish offenders. In order to study the effect of order (i.e. whether the order in which the evidence is administered influences judicial decisions) and the compensatory effect linked to the paradox of conviction (i.e. that in order to convict, judges would be satisfied with clues that are all the less convincing the more serious the crime committed, but that they would then compensate their lack of conviction with a less severe sentence), this research proposes to conduct a broad survey of all criminal judges in Switzerland.
Co-ordinated by the Statistical Service of the Ministry of Justice of the Netherlands, this study aims at obtaining comparable data on crime in various countries. Since official statistics provide information that is heavily dependent on the organization of the police and the justice system in each country, the study's approach is to study the incidence of crime in the population - the degree of victimization in the population - by means of an international survey of the population. 14 countries participated in the 1989 survey: USA, Canada, Australia, France, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Spain, Federal Republic of Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway and Finland, as well as two cities, Warsaw (Poland) and Surabaja (Indonesia). Japan participated on the basis of a somewhat modified questionnaire and sampling. The survey was resumed in 1992 in the following countries: England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, USA, Canada, Australia, and additionally Sweden, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Georgia, Estonia, Indonesia and Costa Rica. On the other hand, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, France, Norway, Spain and Japan didn't take part. Selected cities in the following countries also took part: Argentina, Albania, India, South Africa, Russia, Slovenia, Uganda, Brazil, Philippines, Egypt, Tanzania, Tunisia, China. The following crimes were investigated by the investigation: car theft, motorcycle theft, moped theft and bicycles theft, burglary, robbery, simple theft and pickpocketing, sexual assault, assault and battery, threats. Respondents who were victims of such crimes were asked a few brief questions about the place of the offense, the material consequences, the report to the police, the satisfaction with the police action, and the received assistance. All the interviewees were also asked to express themselves about their fear of crime, their satisfaction with the local police, their preventive attitude towards crime, how severely they would sentence a 21-year-old repeat burglar. Note that the questionnaire has evolved between successive surveys. After 1992, the survey was resumed twice at the international level and once at the Swiss level. In total, the following survey waves were completed: 1989 international survey (with Swiss participation) 1992 international survey (without Swiss participation) 1996 international survey (with Swiss participation) 1998 Swiss survey 2000 international survey (with Swiss participation)
Crime has become a major problem in public opinion in recent years. It is therefore of prime importance to know the extent of the prevalence and incidence of delinquency in Switzerland, and more specifically delinquency concerning aggravated behaviour (in particular sexual violence and serious bodily harm to persons). The descriptive study of the commission of this delinquency inevitably leads us to focus on the two other aspects of this phenomenon: victimization and acceptance of violence. The main question is: What are the frequencies of violent behaviour and experiences in Switzerland and what are the relationships between personal experiences of victimisation and the commission of acts of physical and sexual violence on the other hand among men? Other factors concerning the respondent's personality, life and immediate social environment are also assessed. The more subtle forms of psychological violence are not taken into consideration.

The Optimus study in South Africa was designed specifically to estimate the annual incidence and lifetime prevalence of child sexual abuse and maltreatment in South Africa. Prior to this study, no nationally representative data on the extent or impact of child sexual abuse existed. In order to obtain a comprehensive picture of the nature, extent and impact of child sexual abuse in the country, the study drew on two data sources. The first was a population study conducted with a sample of 15 to 17 year old adolescents recruited nationally from schools (n=4086) as well as households (n=5631), while the second was an agency component that consisted of a series of in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with front-line staff and child protection agency directors servicing the communities or geographical spaces identified through the population survey sampling process. Through a thorough exploration of these areas, the study identifies where resources can best be targeted, provides a local evidence base for the development of effective interventions, and identifies whether intervening in one form of abuse or neglect might also have the potential to address other forms of violence.
The Optimus Study is a cross-national initiative on child sexual victimization in the context of other forms of maltreatment, and aims to provide much-needed evidence on the risks and protective factors for children and youth. Its goal is ultimately to reduce the incidence of abuse and improve services for those affected by applying the best social science research methods available to create an evidence base in order to influence policy, practice, and funding. The Optimus Study has successfully developed a research model that integrates standardized population-based survey methods with health and social statistics tracking to assess prevalence and response rates (Agency Survey), as well as a framework to advance the field through translating the knowledge generated by the research into policy and practice. It also strives to advance international epidemiology research on violence against children. The population survey in Switzerland collected lifetime and previous-year prevalence of sexual victimization experiences for a nationally representative sample of youth from 15-17, as well as information on other types of maltreatment, risk factors, protective factors, and consequences of victimization.
The Optimus Study in China is a national study on prevalence and annual incidence of child sexual abuse (CSA) in China comprising epidemiological data (population survey) and official data (agency survey) that will take place between 2008 and 2011. The objectives of the population survey are to estimate prevalence and annual incidence of child victimization in China, including Hong Kong and 5 provinces of the Mainland China. A cohort of parents or guardians of children aged 0 - 17 and students aged 15 - 17 drawn from large representative samples from households and schools in Hong Kong and 5 Mainland provinces will be interviewed face-to-face by trained interviewers. The agency survey shall provide an annual estimate of incidence known to authorities and shall become a baseline for tracking change in terms of the CSA count and the structure of the response system. It shall also be a baseline for comparisons between regions and grounds for informing policies. The survey will cover agencies such as police departments, hospitals and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) offering services to victims and perpetrators of CSA. The present research aims at bridging existing research and information gaps with regard to the incidence and prevalence of child victimization in China. This study will have significant policy implications. Information obtained from the study will facilitate evidence-based planning and policy-making.

Interest in the topic of violence against women has grown strongly over the last two decades. During the nineties, and following studies on the subject in Canada and the United States, the focus has shifted to violence against women in general, and no longer exclusively on domestic violence against women. Following the preparatory work of two UN institutes (UNICRI in Turin and HEUNI in Helsinki), and once the method had been standardized (identical questionnaire and survey method), national studies on this issue have been planned in approximately 30 countries. The Swiss survey is based on a telephone interview, between April and August 2003, of 1975 women aged 18 to 70 living in the German-speaking and the French-speaking parts of Switzerland. The sample thus obtained is representative of the female population. The method used was the computer-assisted telephone survey, which had already proved adequate in previous victimization surveys. This choice was also motivated by the great complexity of the questionnaire. The latter should indeed allow to apprehend different categories of violence, relating to different types of relationship between the author and his victim (marriage, cohabitation, former partners, colleagues, strangers) since the age of 16 years (experiences lived in childhood are not taken into account). There are several objectives for this study: - to increase the awareness of this problem among the authorities and the public - to promote prevention - to provide reliable information for the development of legislation, policies and means of assistance to victims - to set up an internationally comparable database - to help the police in their work practices concerning violence against women - to formulate and test certain hypotheses On thjs basis, here are the hypotheses and research questions: - What is the extent of this type of violence in Switzerland, compared to other countries? How to explain these differences? - How has the situation of domestic violence evolved since the study by Gillioz et al. (1994)? - How important are various factors, including situational and biographical, in experiences of violence? - What is the influence of the past and current criminal history of men on their tendency to domestic violence? - What particular interaction effects are revealed among the variables studied? - How is the role of the police perceived among the victims? - Does (institutionalized) aid to victims achieve its objectives?
