Students' memories and learning strategies are situated in their social relationships, political orientations, cultural meanings, worldviews, and historical experiences. This study uses qualitative research methods to investigate how Canadian students remember and learn about the War on Terror. It deals with the narratives of ninety-nine students studying in an urban university of Ontario. I find that apart from textual resources, remembering and learning involve a collectivity of significant 'others' or what I call interpretative communities. These communities play an influential role in the consumption and negotiation of knowledge inside and outside the classrooms thus an understanding of their role may help teachers to enhance their instructional strategies.Key words: Canada; remembering; interpretative communities; narratives; learning.Author's Note An earlier version of this paper was presented at the CSSE Annual Conference at Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec. 1 June 2010.

This thesis aims to shed light on self-direction in learning within its collective dimension. Study Circles have been used for over one hundred years, mainly in Sweden. Studies on this model in French are lacking. One goal for this research is to fill in on this deficiency. We have initiated 11 Study Circles in France, in naturalistic settings, on different themes and within different contexts, to study the effects of a varying presence or absence of a Reference Person to the Field of Study (RPFS) on the regulation and perceptions of the learning by 53 participants. The research indicates that the degree of anticipation of group processes and its collective nature, and the frequency of co-evaluation, are higher in Study Circles with no RPFS. A study of perceptions of learning reveals differences mainly linked to other variables. A high level of learner satisfaction manifests itself independently of RPFS modalities. This research reveals that contrary to what one may expect, the presence of a domain specific specialist (teacher or instructor) did not favor a perception of quantitatively greater or more diversified learning, or greater satisfaction. Lastly, it is suggested to extend the concept of self-direction to include a collective dimension. This co-direction, borne by a cooperative and democratic quality of relations, is the basis for communal agency.
International audience ; Tartaglia's Nova Scientia published in 1537 heralded a new approach to the problems of military technology, by adopting neo-platonistic principles to physical phenomena. However, his enquiry was limited by his Aristotelian viewpoint, and his final edition of 1558 offered the idea that nature could be explained by knowledge applied through Platonic philosophy. Tartaglia had accepted that the flight of the missile, hitherto thought to comprise distinct violent and natural phases, had to be of a mixed nature. While application of mathematics in a mechanical paradigm offered a practical validity, readers needed convincing by a formal proof. The problem of the Gunner was finding a reliable way of firing his shot with reasonable accuracy. Neo-platonist philosophy needed a convincing solution to this problem. In his Stratioticos (1579) Thomas Digges' chapter on gunnery proposed an extensive list of parameters for investigation, thus offering an experimental programme for the English Gunners to follow over the next century. Some thoughts on learning in communities and epistemologies are considered
; Abstract: Since the overhaul of educational policies, schools in Guadeloupe are invited to revisit their operation by giving a large space forcollective work. Therefore, collaboration, which is at the heart of professional practices, is put forward, in particular, in continuing education for headteachers and teachers. The institutions, which are the Ministry of National Education of Higher Education and Research and French Catholic Education, promoteeducational communities to co-construct their learning with the aim of adjusting practices (Couture, Dionne and Savoie-Zajc, 2012), or even professional development (Uwamariya and Mukamurera, 2005). However, we know little about the mechanisms that can be implemented that would value collaboration in a goal of continuous development of learning withineducational communities that train school personnel working in colleges and high schools to French Catholic Education in Guadeloupe. Hence, the social relevance of the object of study. For their part, research conducted in Europe, North America and moreparticularly in France contributed to the knowledge of professional development, valuing the updating of their skills. According to Roussel (2015), to do this, it is essential that they themselves define these as a primary actor by co-constructing them through collaboration. However, the "shyness" of research in relation to the relationships between co-construction established in collaborative dynamics and the emergence of a learning community, established within the educational communities that are the school staff, has brought us to consider the scientific relevance of the object of study, but also its relevance for practice environments. Thus, the study that we conducted questions the following research question: In a social learning perspective, what are the relational dynamics between co-construction, collaboration, learning community and representations? In order to answer them scientifically, the conceptual framework articulates the concepts and constructs that follow: social learning (Bandura, 1976, Miller and Dollard, 1941) and the co-construction of learning (Fourdriat, 2016, Girault, 2005); collaboration (Cook and Friend 1991, Farouk 2007, Leclerc 2012) and the learning community (Labelle and Leclerc 2013, Orellana 2005); cognitive representations (Denis and Dubois, 1976) and social representations (Abric, 1987, Jodelet, 1989; Moscovici, 1961). For its part, the general objective was to identify representations of school personnel with regard to the learning community, generating collaboration and co-construction of learning, as well as its effects on professional development and a sense of collective effectiveness. This descriptive research targets the population of school personnel at the French Catholic Teaching in Guadeloupe. As for the sample, it is divided as follows into two sub-samples totaling 46 subjects: the sub-sample 1 bringing together the diocesan direction (N = 1), the Congregational tutelage of Saint-Joseph de Cluny (N=2) and Heads of schools in Guadeloupe (N=15); sub-sample 2 composed of teachers from the college and vocational high school of the Saint-Joseph de Cluny School (N=20), but also teachers from the vocational and technical high school of Versailles (N=8). The data was collected by distributing a questionnaire and conducting an interview (individual, dyad or group) giving rise to quantitative analyzes (Deslauriers, 1991), but also qualitative (Bardin, 1977). The analyzes put forward common and shared representations by the participants. Thus, the collaboration is manifested in institutionalized spaces that are the formal meetings with the head of the establishment and those informal between colleagues in "teachers' room", but also during the continuous inter-institutional training. If they are places of learning, they constitute the foundations of the recursive nature of social life (Giddens, 2012) and institutional professional practices, even managerial within communities. The relationships between collaboration, co-learning and representations within established learning communities reinforce the interactions between school staff who claim to feel a sense of personal and collective effectiveness. There is no doubt that the principle of recursion, in this institutional space, contributes to this, and would thus make theenvironment in the school environment "capacitive" if each member found the conditions for its own development.
Community managed forest systems embody a considerable portion of the wisdom, knowledge, and practical skills and management necessary for the sustainability of forest resources globally. These systems, however, are under threat in many ways, including from the rapid rate of change of their political, socio-economic, and biophysical contexts. Adapting forest management sufficiently quickly and effectively to meet these changes is both urgent and very challenging. This Guide introduces criteria and indicators of sustainability for community managed forest landscapes (CMF C&I) as a potential learning and communication tool that can help meet that challenge. It draws on CIFOR collaborative research on CMF C&I in Brazil, Indonesia, and Cameroon to propose a flexible step-by-step approach to developing and implementing self - or collaborative forest monitoring systems, and gives examples of C&I developed by communities in these countries. The approach is targeted to communities and their partners in forest management, such as NGOs, government, or development projects, who are seeking strategies to improve local well-being and forest sustainability through more effective learning, collaboration, and decision-making in local forest management.
International audience ; Peru is a multilingual, multicultural country with a bilingual education system (now termed intercultural) that has developed greatly in recent years. Since 2014, the Peruvian government has offered scholarships to students from indigenous communities working to develop this education sector and cover an estimated deficit of 20,000 teachers. Prestigious universities in Lima have opened Undergraduate Programs in Intercultural Bilingual Education (IBE), which bring together students from different indigenous communities, specifically Quechua, Aymara (Andeans) and Shipibo (Amazonians). In an initial assessment, most students did not achieve a satisfactory level of performance in mathematics. This paper develops a proposal for integrating long-established Andean mathematical tools and dynamic geometry software into the learning and teaching process in order to improve attainment of mathematical competence in the intercultural education sector.
Mots clefs : apprentissage, parties prenantes, société minière, politique RSE, en-castrement 2 Abstract The implementation by a multinational of its social responsibility in an emerging country raises the question of the boundaries of the firm. In emerging countries, when a company is the only economic actor of an area, the links between local and corporate governance are all the most important as the action of the administration is weak. This study examines by which process a French company learns to implement its social responsibility in an emerging country, Indonesia. By taking into account the management of externalities, corporations become part of the environment and their embed-dedness leads them to be in contact with both contractual and non contractual stake-holders. This social and economic overlapping places corporations in a relational model which will determine their behavior towards CSR. Corporations willing to take on their responsibility whilst taking into account the various stakeholders must accept that their strategic choices may be questioned even though they remain first tier players. This pro-active behavior is part of a systems logic in which learning takes place using feedback. Thro their desire to provide an answer to the integration of the various levels of responsibility , corporations take part in an organizational learning process in which interactions between individuals are multiplied and coordinated. The beginnings of coordination tend to show that the path is still open to reach the learning objectives. This research is based mainly on qualitative data. Several semi-structured interviews have been held between June 2010 and January 2011. They were held with managers in charge of the mining project and with external stakeholders. The results of the study show that the implementation by a multinational of its social responsibility in an emerging country follows a learning process. To increase its social acceptability, the company develops internal structures such as a communication department and a foundation dedicated to the local communities and uses the services of external structures such as the MIGA from the World Bank and French academic, transportation and health institutions.
International audience ; From the perspective of learning, transmitting and being innovating, universities encounter crucial challenges. Since the end of 1970, the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM) has adopted a social mission to provide to Montréal's community and Quebec's society its expertise in training, research and creation. In this paper, first, we present the historical context which places the development of the social mission of modern universities. This leads us, in a second stage, to introduce the institutional anchoring of the action research work done in our university. This work is reflected in the presentation of the institutional policy 41 that lead to the creation of the Services aux collectivités. We pursue the presentation with an analytical look at the ways Canadians universities mobilize knowledge and at the specifics of the model established at UQAM.
This article shows the results of a large-scale survey focused on the experiences, perceptions and attitudes of master level teacher interns in the French national education system in the context of COVID-19 lockdown. Data was collected in four French overseas territories: Guadeloupe, Martinique, New Caledonia and French Polynesia. The online poll covered four aspects of the teacher intern experience: possession of computer equipment, access to digital resources, available technology hardware during lockdown, educational interactions, well-being and feelings of insecurity. The quantitative analysis of the responses was combined with a similarity in network analysis based on the participants' comments. The results obtained show that the online training strategies put in place to manage the crisis were often hastily improvised and could not resolve the lack of technical and economic means from which the most marginalized and geographically isolated communities suffer. This situation has resulted in overworked, highly dissatisfied and stressed oversea teacher interns.
This paper tries to provide a brief analysis of the history of changing media space and the evolution of digital culture, with a special focus on the comparative analysis of pros and cons. It highlights the power of new media and that how it helps institutions, government apparatus and the scientific communities, for example, universities in making a participatory environment among citizens and in the dissemination of knowledge and scientific thoughts in a best possible way. In addition, it also provides opportunities to learn with peers without geographical boundaries famously known as: Peer-to-peer learning and helps to develop new skills required in the modern age. But at the same time there are some concerns that need for policy and pedagogical interventions like participatory gap, Transparency and ethical challenges. This is the problem statement of this paper.
Our article provides a typological analysis of the regulation of common scientists on the basis of their linguistic coding activity. We analyse the commonalities from the perspective of the displayed functioning of communities facilitated by their members. We question the apparent homogeneity of the epistemic communities that support these communities by conducting an analysis based on linguistic imaginaries. That question calls into question the homogeneity of the 'community' form. On the one hand, we carry out a wide review of social science literature and, on the other hand, carry out a sociolinguistic analysis of the lexical statements resulting from the self-presentations of 23 communes. This critical analysis leads to the segmentation of all the groups that develop these commonalities into two families: communities with a stable and regular profile and for scientific or technical purposes, and groups with a hot and unstable profile and with a view to social transformation. ; International audience We aim to propose a typological analysis of the regulation of scientific creative commons from the linguistic codification activity. We analyze the commons since the point of view of the communities' work. We point the apparent homogeneity of the epistemic communities that support these commons.
