(BIOst-Wpt)

This article argues that the Liberal Democratic Party is a social liberal rather than a social democratic one. The two ideologies differ in their attitudes to the state. Both see a positive role for the state in furthering social goods. However, social liberalism shares classical liberal concerns about the dangers of an over-mighty state. This approach underpins Liberal Democrat policy. References. Adapted from the source document.

Liberal Democrat policy has been labelled as social democratic, yet the party has been reluctant to so describe itself. Taking Crosland's The Future of Socialism as a reference point, there appears to be much shared ground between social democracy and Liberal Democrat policy. Meanwhile, the party's tax policy adopted in 2006 takes the Croslandite approach of taxing wealth rather than income. Despite this, the article argues that the party is a social liberal rather than a social democratic one. These two political philosophies have so much in common that it is understandable that some commentators see the influence of social democracy where they might instead perceive social liberalism. Yet the two differ in their attitudes to the state. Both see a positive role for the state in furthering social goods. However, social liberalism shares classical liberal concerns about the dangers of an over‐mighty state. This approach underpins Liberal Democrat policy.

Planners and Politicians explores the interrelationship among social programs, federal-provincial relations, the role of the bureaucracy in devising and legitimizing policy, and the nature of political power in the modern Canadian state. By considering social policy as part of national policy and recognizing that the federal government was shaped by the imperatives of the programs it was designing, this book offers a new perspective on Canadian social policy and the evolution of the state.

The future of policy analysis is uncertain enough to make a narrowly professional approach to curriculum development undesirable, while policy analysis can make its own contributions to a liberal education; both considerations support including policy analysis in the liberal arts & sciences areas. It may be regarded as a `third culture' closing the gap between sciences & humanities to some degree. Economics, political science, & sociology all have problems as fields which policy analysis could help resolve. Possible implementation of such a program includes interdisciplinary centers, use of policy analysis as a fusion of science & engineering, & formulation of a policy analysis version of public administration school curricula. The fusion of policy analysis with liberal arts is risky, but does offer benefits. W. H. Stoddard.
