Il presente elaborato si configura come analisi approfondita del linguaggio del partito tedesco Alternative für Deutschland, la cui comparsa nel 2013 ha cambiato definitivamente lo scenario politico in Germania. Data l'importanza crescente che il partito ha assunto nel corso degli ultimi anni, si pone la necessità di analizzare il linguaggio di questo partito. In particolare questa ricerca si propone di analizzare l'uso che i membri di Alternative für Deutschland fanno della lingua in Parlamento. Nel caso del presente elaborato, si tratta di uno studio dei discorsi selezionati mediante l'uso di corpora. La ricerca si pone, da un lato, l'obiettivo di fornire una panoramica dei fenomeni linguistici presenti nel corpus preso in analisi basandosi su dati statistici. Dall'altro lato l'analisi si prefigge di rintracciare le strategie discorsive e gli schemi argomentativi ricorrenti. L'approccio integrato fra metodo quantitativo e qualitativo consente di portare alla luce il vero significato dei testi garantendo in questo modo un'analisi dettagliata del discorso in esame. Il presente elaborato si suddivide in tre sezioni: nel primo capitolo verrà descritto il contesto politico-culturale in cui la ricerca si colloca: nel secondo capitolo verrà illustrata la cornice teorica da cui lo studio prende le mosse. In ultimo, nel terzo capito verrà presentata l'analisi vera e propria. Lo studio si pone come proposta di descrizione delle caratteristiche della porzione di discorso politico presa in analisi. Il presente elaborato rappresenta dunque uno spunto per ulteriori approfondimenti sul linguaggio di Alternative für Deutschland.

Abstract
This paper proposes a methodological framework that integrates poststructuralist Discourse Theory (DT), Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) and Corpus Linguistics (CL). While previous research has discussed potential compatibility between combinations of these approaches, there have been few attempts to bring them all together into a cohesive research programme. Fostering dialogue between diverse methodological perspectives can facilitate multi-level analysis to capture the complex dynamics of sociopolitical issues. In this vein, the article presents the methodological tree, an analogy used to illustrate how these traditions may come together to complement one another. This foundation lays the groundwork for practical application in discursive analysis, with a flexible analytical structure proposed and examples provided to illustrate its implementation. It is hoped that the article can stimulate further discussion around how DT, CDS and CL can be brought together to harness their strengths.

This article examines modal resources in the mediatised discourse of social transformation in Nigeria with a view to showing how they are strategically used to code interpersonal meanings for enhanced and impactful delivery of messages of social transformation in the nation. Data for the study comprises texts on aspects of social transformation campaigns in Nigeria in the context of democracy, anti-corruption crusade, insecurity and domestic violence compiled as small corpora. The data comprises texts produced by government and non-governmental actors consisting of speeches, radio commentaries, jingles, printed texts, interviews, tweets and online newspaper comments and covers the period from March 2013 to March 2018. The five-year span was informed by the wide gamut of negative realities in the nation during the time frame which led to increased mediatisation of social transformation messages. Corpus-assisted critical discourse approach was employed for data analysis, using Fairclough's (1989, revised 2015) dialectical relational approach, the corpus linguistic tool of Antconc, chi-square test on R-Studio and normalised relative frequencies. Data analysis revealed that the different participants in the discourse characteristically used different modal resources to reflect their power on the one hand and resistance on the other and to capture the intensity of their views and feelings on the actions required for Nigeria to experience genuine social transformation. The study concludes that even though the discourse is largely ideational, modal resources are deployed for emphasising the urgency and seriousness of the issues in the ideational contents of the discourse.

The term 'leftover women', commonly referring to single women older than 27, has been in popular use in Chinese media since 2007. This study investigates how leftover women are linguistically represented in the English-language news media in China by employing a corpus-assisted approach to critical discourse analysis. A specialised corpus of 303 English news articles (i.e. 236,254 words), covering the years between 2007 and 2017, was built for this purpose. Corpus linguistics techniques were employed to quantify the meaning shift units (MSUs) of the lemma leftover WOMAN, and van Leeuwen's 'social actors and actions theory' was applied to inform the classification of MSUs in context. These findings shed light on media representations of leftover women, the contested ideologies emerging from these representations, and how shifting gender politics and identity shapes and is shaped by media in the world's most populous nation.

The Chinese government aspires for inclusive education to serve as an exemplary model in addressing educational inequity issues and establishing a responsible global image as a major power. Nevertheless, there has been limited focus on China's news media coverage concerning its inclusive education initiatives aimed at international audiences. To bridge this gap, this study employed a corpus-assisted critical discourse analytic approach to examine China's self-image in relation to its inclusive education endeavours. Seventy-three English-language news articles from the official channel were retrieved for meticulous line-by-line concordance analysis. The results indicate that out of the 520 co-occurring instances, they can be broadly categorised into four groups: efforts to develop inclusive education (65.4%); consensus on benefits of inclusive education (24.5%); challenges faced by inclusive education (4.8%); and others (5.4%). This study illuminates the effective utilisation of official media in the image construction of inclusive education in China.

AbstractThe representation of sex work in the media has received little to no attention in the field of linguistics and discourse analysis. Given that news discourse can have a huge impact on public opinions, ideologies and norms, and the setting of political agendas and policies (van Dijk 1989), the study adopts a Corpus-Assisted Critical Discourse Analysis (CACDA) approach (Baker, Gabrielatos, KhosraviNik, Krzyżanowski, McEnery & Wodak 2008), seeking to explore whether journalists reproduce or challenge negative stereotypes vis-à-vis sex work. Examining 82 articles published in three Greek newspapers (Kathimerini, TA NEA, Efimerida ton Syntakton) in 2017, this paper considers the lexico-grammatical choices that are typically involved in the representation of sex work and sex workers in the Press. Drawing on Systemic Functional Linguistics, the Discourse Historical Approach and corpus linguistics, the analysis links the textual findings (micro-level context) with the discourse practice context (meso-context) as well as the social context in which sex work occurs (macro-context). Findings illustrate that although sex work in Greece has been legalised for about two decades, traces of abolitionist discourses can be found in the Press, building barriers in the emancipatory efforts of sex workers who stand up for having equal civil and labour rights as their fellow citizens.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore two channels of communication (i.e. texts and images) from a non-governmental organization website called #DisruptAging with the aim of finding how multimodal knowledge dissemination contributes to dismantling misconceptions about the aging process.


Design/methodology/approach
This analysis is based on an integrated approach that combines corpus-assisted discourse analysis (cf. Semino and Short, 2004; Baker et al., 2008, Baker, 2010) and multimodal critical discourse analysis (Machin and Mayr, 2012) via the American Medical Association format (2007) and the suite of FrameWorks tools (2015, 2017), which are applied to the collection of texts and images taken from #DisruptAging.


Findings
A total of 69 stories corresponding with 218 images of older adults have shown to be powerful textual and semiotic resources, designed both for educational and awareness-raising purposes, to promote the so-called "aging well discourse" (cf. Loos et al., 2017).


Social implications
This discursive approach to the textual and visual material found in #DisruptAging hopes to influence the governing institutions that we construct, and the people who are given power to run them, with the goal of fostering fair treatment of older people within society.


Originality/value
There is a lack of studies investigating counter-discourse forms available online, which use textual and visual language to change the way society conceives the idea of aging.

The use of OCR software to convert printed characters to digital text is a fundamental tool within diachronic approaches to Corpus-assisted discourse Studies. However, OCR software is not totally accurate, and the resulting error rate may compromise the qualitative analysis of the studies. This paper proposes a mixed qualitative-quantitative approach to OCR error detection and correction in order to develop a methodology for enhancing the quality of historical corpora. We applied the developed methodology to two case studies on newspapers of the beginning of the 20th century for the linguistic analysis of the metaphors representing migration and pandemics. The outcome of this project consists in a set of rules which are, eventually, valid for different contexts and applicable to different corpora and which can be reproduced and reused. The proposed procedure, in terms of computational readability, is aimed at making more readable and searchable the vast array of historical text corpora which are, at the moment, only partially usable given the high error rate introduced by an OCR software. ; L'uso di software di riconoscimento OCR per convertire i caratteri stampati in testo digitale è uno strumento fondamentale per quanto riguarda l'ambito di studio degli approcci diacronici all'analisi del discorso politico attraverso i corpora (CADS studies). Tuttavia, i software OCR non sono totalmente affidabili, e il loro tasso di fallibilità può compromettere l'analisi. Questo articolo propone un approccio qualitativo-quantitativo al rilevamento e alla correzione degli errori post scansione OCR al fine di sviluppare una metodologia per migliorare la qualità dei corpora all'interno degli studi storici. Abbiamo applicato la metodologia sviluppata a due casi di studio su giornali dell'inizio del XX secolo per l'analisi linguistica delle rappresentazioni metaforico delle migrazioni e delle pandemie. Il risultato di questo progetto consiste in un insieme di regole che sono valide per diversi contesti e applicabili a diversi corpora e che possono essere riutilizzate. La procedura proposta, in termini di leggibilità computazionale, ha lo scopo di rendere più leggibile e ricercabile la vasta gamma di corpora di testi storici che sono, al momento, solo parzialmente utilizzabili dato l'alto tasso di errore derivante da un software di riconoscimento OCR.

Corpus, Culture and Discourse is a groundbreaking new study of academic discourse across cultures, languages and disciplines that will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in language for specific purposes, corpus linguistics and intercultural communication/pragmatics. Based on a large-scale parallel corpus, the study examines social interaction, identity construction and metadiscourse in English- and Germanlanguage research articles across five disciplines. The innovative combination of quantitative corpus and statistical analyses with detailed qualitative analysis delivers some surprising and interesting results.

AbstractMigration has been a defining topic in the discourse in Germany since the so-called "refugee crisis" in 2015. This corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis systematically reconstructs the discourse about migration in two influential German newspapers, thereby emphasizing the construction of different subject positions for people migrating to Germany. Mass media are an important arena for the fight for hegemony between discursive coalitions of culturalization regimes that are based on openness and closure respectively. The discursive space of the German discourse about migration offers multiple opportunities in this regard. In the left-leaningtaz, we detect a general trend to support an open society although some (but often contested) elements of closure are detected in this medium as well.Die Weltleans much more towards closure and the problematization of migration although it also offers a diverse array of interpellations that depend on the usefulness or threating character of people coming to Germany.
