In the present paper the author continues his critical evaluation of both historiographic and journalistic works published between the second half of 1978 and the end of February 1997 about the history of Freemasonry in Croatian terrritories. In the beginning of this period journalistic contributions were more numerous, but in recent years, with a few exceptions, the papers belonging to historiography are predominant. The authors of the latter papers are Josip Kolanovic, Ljubo Antic, Ante Duplancic and Ivo Pederin. (SOI : CSP: S. 286)
One of the characteristics of the cultural policy of the NDH is a more resolute publishing activity with an emphasis on the creation of the Ustasha literature, important for the promotion of the Ustasha programmatic principles. Several titles were promoted daily from all aspects of human activity, which amounts to 3000 titles in all. Matica Hrvatska, Croatia Publishing (Bibliographical) Office, Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences and Contemporary Library can boast of quality titles. The aim of this article is not an evaluation of the literature, but an illustration of th literary production in the NDH. (SOI : CSP: S. 71)
The author attempts to introduce a new theme in Croatian historiography by pointing to the problems he encountered with sources and literature. The fundamental problem is that the primary documents arc predominantly from one side in the conflict, the Yugoslav secrete service (UDBA). The problem is augmented by the fact that those sources consist of studies made during the sixties, based on recollections of participants in the period 1945-1950, whereas there are very few documents from the period of struggle with the Crusaders. The very real problem is the absence of documents by Crusaders themselves, which makes the verification of the documents of the victorious side very difficult. The literature, not abundant, produced by participants of the sides in conflict, is not very useful for research. (SOI : CSP: S. 28)
The author presents the situation and the fate of the Germans in the Danube-basin (German and Austrian minorities) in Croatia after the World War Two. He also deals with the fundamental problems (political, legal, cultural, economic demographic etc.) and points at the most important Yugoslav, Croatian and German sources and literature. (SOI : CSP: S. 233)
The author presents the last days of the World War Two in the Independent State of Croatia, with a special emphasis on political and military situation at the end of 1944 and beginning of 1945, as well as the development of the war situation in May 1945. The list of the most important published sources and literature is also included. (SOI : CSP: S. 505)
The author presents the literature on the problem of history of ISC published between 1991 and 1995. With the fall of ideological barriers and bans in 1990 and opening the opportunity of free researches on the history of ISC, Croatian general and scientific public manifested an extremely great interest in this topic, which reflected ina large number of published works, associated, entirely or partly, with the period of ISC. Unfortunately, partly due also to the lack of systematic scientific researches of that period, only a part of the cited works can be included into the group of scientific works (in fact, some of them are prints of the works published in emigration). Most of the titles the author deals with in the present paper are characterized by a popular-journalistic approach to the theme. However, here too one can find interesting information and observations. Finally, mention should be made of a group of works with characteristics of memoires. In the end, looking at this period as a whole, one could hardly give a completely satisfactory evaluation of all the literature so far. Yet, it should be noticed that recently (in 1995) quite a number of works on the Independent State of Croatia was published, which by their quality and extensiveness almost exceeded most of the titles published before this five-year period. Taking this fact and also increased interest in systematic scientific investigations of the problems of ISC into account, we can only hope that the future will bring much high-grade contributions on this subject. The term charisma was first used in theological writings. In the Old Testament literature, the term occurs only twice. However, in the New Testament it occurs seventeen times. It is used by St. Paul in the First Letter to the Corinthians, in the Letter to the Romans, in the Second Letter to the Corinthians. In the political context, the word charisma has been lavishly used in the analyses of national-socialist and stalinist regimes. Charismatic legitimation is, primarily, a feature of various types of dictatorships and no of democratic, constitutional states. This is probably why charismatic aspects are so notorious in most contemporary social theory. (SOI : PM: S. 144)
The author focuses on about twenty Croatian and non-Croatian authors, who published in this renowned political and literary review. They belong to different social groups and adopt differing political options, which also determine their attitude toward NDH. There are two main approaches. One, which simply explains the policies of NDH, where Jere Jareb is the most representative author. The other approach is the justification of those policies to some degree. A special attention is paid to authors who analyse foreign, especially German literature, that touches on Croatian issues, and to authors that were direct participants in the events, such as Mate Frkovic, who participated in the Lorkovic-Vokic putsch. (SOI : CSP: S. 95f.)
Polemically oriented towards Plessner's "Belated Nation" and the introductory presentations in the debate about this book at the Faculty of Political Science, the author is of the opinion that the German case is the one of a belated attempt at empire-creation, and that all the nations in the world are "late" - except for the Dutch. By referring to the literature on politico-economic history and the model and comparative analysis of the nation-state as a complex politico-economic community within the world system of the West, the author thinks that Schieder's typology of the creation of European nations is not plausible, neither theoretically nor factually/historically. (SOI : PM: S. 30)
Based on the literature and the available sources, first of all contemporary press, the author reconstructs the attitude of the Croatian Popular Party on the events concerning the assassination on Stjepan Radic, the representative of the Croatian Peasant Party in the National Assembly of the Monarchy of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. Special attention is paid to the entrance of S. Baric, president of the Croatian Popular Party, into the government of Anton Korosec, and reactions to this step. Disappearance of the Croatian Popular Party from the Croatian political scene was closely connected with the resistance (gemeint ist: lack of resistance, SOI, Clw) of its leaders to this extremely unpopular government. (SOI : CSP: S. 245)
The article presents a public echo of the 1966 party conference which dealt with the misuses of the State Security Services (SDS). The issue is described in four parts; the Brijuni Plenary as a subject of investigation in domestic and foreign literature; chronology of events; discussions in political organizations and newspapers; the dossiers - police documentation on citizens. In the literature. the political fall of Aleksandar Rankovic, the founder and for a long time leading figure of that agency, is considered as a political struggle for power or the outcome of the confrontation between "reformist" and "conservative" stream in the Union of the SKJ. The chronology deals with the time between the "Plenary", July 1 - 2, 1966 and the adoption by the Federal Parliament of Yugoslavia of the new law of internal affairs by the end of the same year. In December of that year Josip Broz Tito issued a clemency to S. Rankovic and fifteen other highest officials of that agency. The discussion in the political organizations and newspapers showed that political activists, and "simple" people as well, think that the responsibility for the misuses lie not only on individuals but on the way the organization was structured and on the unlimited power it had. The party leadership tried to subdue those criticisms. because they did not want to be left without the most valuable partner in the system of power. The public was also made aware of a great number of private dossiers - the police documentation on citizens which came into existence in the preceding twenty years. The most diligent was the SDS in Croatia, which amassed one million three hundred thousand such dossiers. (SOI : CSP: S. 489)
The beginnings of the scientific study of international relations in Croatia precede its inauguration and international recognition as an independent state in the early 1990s. Already in the former state of Yugoslavia, there were pioneer attempts in Zagreb at serious research into the complex science of international relations. In 1962, the Faculty of Political Science was founded; one of the subjects was international relations. At the end of the 1970s, and at the same Faculty, a postgraduate study program of international relations was launched. Zagreb, due to the quality and quantity of its experts and their dedicated pedagogical work, the publication of their works, and their contacts with their colleagues abroad, had the central role in the development of a modern science of international relations, not only in the former state but in the wider region of South-East Europe. The declaration of the independent Republic of Croatia, and geo- political and geo-economic changes in the international environment, pose new challenges, obstacles, opportunities as well as objective needs for a new approach and the development of the study of intentational relations, the accompanying institutions and the publication of relevant literature.
