Cristina Alsina Rísquez ; In "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" the well-acclaimed Dominican-American writer Junot Díaz portrays the harrowing story of the de León family. A family, indeed, who manages to scrape out an existence in the United States after leaving the Dominican Republic as a direct consequence of a series of untimely tragedies, namely Trujillo's dictatorship or the fukú that both cursed and haunted the whole family –Beli's inability to feel love and her writhing in intense pain, Oscar's clumsiness at seducing women or Lola's aimless life attest for it. Thus, the de León family embodies the diasporic experience and the need to reshape their notion of Dominicanness accordingly. This consideration implies not only challenging the monolithic representation of Dominican identity, but also, and more importantly, coming to terms with the transcultural discourse of modernity. In such process roots and routes grapple with each other in an attempt at constructing a hyphenated identity. The analysis of diasporic identities in the novel includes, but is not limited to, political regeneration and agency, exploration of (diasporic) masculinity, sexual identity and cultural dissidence. Furthermore, the novel highlights the key role that political and sexual agency plays in this (re)construction of Dominicanness in that the accomplishment of the former enhances the achievement of the latter. So much so that the representation of the diaspora in the text succeeds in constituting itself as a tangible and alternative bodypolitics to former constraints, thus developing effective strategies of resistance so as to recover from the conflict that Trujillo's dictatorship entails. Memories of the Trujillato cannot get dimmer with each passing year and it is through fiction that a healing process comes true. This research aims to intertwine theories of postcoloniality and strategies of identity deconstruction with topics ranging from politics to diaspora or contesting – nearly subversive – masculinities in order to explore the so-called hyphenated identities and 'on the way' cultures in greater detail.

Ronald Reagan's appropriation of cowboyness as a defining factor in his successful bid for the presidency in 1980 intersected with complementary trends in popular media. In the wake of mainstream enthusiasm for the frontier, gays and lesbians formed their own country-western dance spaces. This cowboy renaissance has been discussed as a reclaiming of American conservatism that helped heal wounds inflicted upon the U.S. imaginary in the wake of failures in Vietnam; through this lens, gay dancing cowboys can be seen as acquiescing to assimilationist impulses. However, this study argues that queers find numerous recuperative possibilities in Western-themed choreographies, frequently subverting heteronormative nationalism by taking on a cowboy swagger. Through ethnographic fieldwork at a gay country-western bar in Los Angeles and analyzing dances on the concert stage, the author theorizes cowboyness as an articulation of masculinity, Americanness, and queerness. The introduction posits President Ronald Reagan's performance of cowboyness as foundational to connections between normative masculinities, the legacy of Manifest Destiny, and the homophobic rhetoric and polices that marked Reagan's presidency. The first chapter looks at the political potency of female cowboyness in the two-step at Oil Can Harry's--a country-western bar in Los Angeles--and in a dance by Marianne Kim and Lee Anne Schmitt called Making a Disaster: The Many Deaths of John Wayne, Part II (2005). Chapter two analyzes Cowboys, Dreams and Ladders (1984) arguing that choreographers Fred Holland and Ishmael Houston-Jones usurp the assumed whiteness and heterosexuality of the Hollywood cowboy, creating a utopia of queer possibility. The third chapter looks at The Shadow as a choreographic incursion upon the two-step that speaks to sex practices of gay men in an atmosphere of neoliberal permissiveness sans equity for queers. Chapter four looks at the line dance "Walk the Line" alongside Joe Goode's The Maverick Strain (1996) to show the potency with which camp can disrupt heteronormative claims to nation. The concluding chapter compares the film Brokeback Mountain (2005) with Adam and Steve (2005), showing how the latter used the cowboy as a symbol of queer possibility in ways that the critically lauded Brokeback Mountain failed to imagine.

Las teorías feministas han sido fundamentales en la conformación de los estudios contemporáneos sobre hombres y masculinidades como tentativas intelectuales y asuntos académicos y como problemas sociales. Este trabajo analiza el impacto que ha tenido la teoría feminista en sus distintas vertientes en los estudios sobre los varones y las masculinidades, así como los presupuestos de estas teorías y sus principales vacíos. Por último, se cuestiona cierto optimismo compartido en relación con los cambios que se han producido en las relaciones de género. Uno de los retos más importantes que tiene el feminismo actualmente es mostrar que los logros adquiridos por las mujeres en la democratización de las relaciones de género no deben darse por un hecho incontestable y que las relaciones de género, como relaciones de fuerza dependen de la acción y reacción de las fuerzas presentes en ellas. Para abordar este tema se hará referencia a una serie de trabajos que evidencian las resistencias masculinas al cambio social y las luchas que libran actualmente los varones por mantener y consolidar su dominación sobre las mujeres. ; Abstract: Feminist theories have been fundamental in giving shape to contemporary studies of men and masculinities as intellectual and academic projects as well as social problems. This paper analyzes the impact feminist theory in its different currents has had on these studies, as well as the presuppositions on which these theories are based and their major gaps. Finally, a certain optimism about changes in gender relations is questioned. One of the major challenges feminism faces at present is to show that women's achievements in democratizing gender relations cannot be taken for granted, and that their continuation depends on actions and reactions of forces that are at play in them. To tackle this subject, reference is made to a series of studies that show masculine resistances to social change and the struggles that males wage at present to maintain and consolidate their domination of women.

This thesis concerns the relationship between English gendered identities and the specificities of region and location. In the years following 1815, the county of Kent was imbued with a powerful 'sense of place'. The county was defined by its militarily strategic position, emphasised by the propaganda, experience and memory of the Napoleonic wars, and its predominantly agricultural economy. Despite the cessation of the wars and economic instability, Kent was perceived as the 'Vanguard of Liberty' and the 'Garden of England'. This 'sense of place' informed the articulation of gender and nationhood. Representations of the 'Men of Kent', a regionally specific assertion of masculine identity, were characterised by behaviour, speech and appearance associated with physical prowess, bearing arms for one's country, and the virtues of 'sturdy Yeomen', those who owned and tilled their own land. 'Men of Kent' were articulated across a series of diverse political campaigns surrounding 'Reform', Agricultural 'Protection', the 'Swing' riots and, on a particularly influential scale, Catholic Emancipation. Other forms of belonging in Kent were not so specifically 'Kentish'. 'Romantic' visions of agrarian-based society, in which hierarchies and inequalities were 'naturalised' - often conceived as 'Old England' - were expressed by political campaigners in Kent and in provincial Southern England more generally. These included 'protectionist' organizations and landlords, and the writings of William Cobbett. The identity of the 'Men of Kent' was expressed primarily through the institutions of the 'county community' such as county meetings and the press. During this period, participation in, and imaginings of, the dominant Kentish 'public sphere' evolved from being relatively narrow - only the aristocratic elite were able to speak for the 'county' - to broader, but still hierarchical conceptions, inflected along the lines of gender, class and race. The Irish, notably the Catholic Association and itinerant labourers, were particularly definitional 'Others' to the 'Men of Kent'. The militaristic and agrarian masculinities of the 'Men of Kent', and related conceptions of society, were also often contested, notably during the labourers' 'Swing' riots and through individual subjectivities.

The International Conference on Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Equality and Diversity in Sports (ICMPEDS) is organized by GESPORT with the support of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union from the 14th to the 16th of July 2021. The conference is an excellent forum for academics, researchers, practitioners, athletes, man- agers and professionals of federations, associations and sport organizations, and those other- wise involved in sport to share and exchange ideas in different areas of sport related equality worldwide. We will keep you informed by email and post the latest information on this matter on the GESPORT website and social media. Sport and its management continues to be a field where men and masculinity strongly prevail. This conference aims to investigate the complexities attached to the following questions: What does gender openness mean in the context of sport in the 21st century? What persists as gen- der closure in the same context? What are the gender cultures that signify sport continuing to be defined by regimes that resort to a dominant masculinity embodied in a strong and athletic male body? Moreover, and albeit some exceptions, athletes, practitioners, decision and policy makers, and sports spectators are predominantly men. In this sense, gender discrimination and segregation are present in multiple aspects of sport. Some illustrations include: a) male athletes have high salaries, more career opportunities, and get more recognition by society than female athletes; b) management and leadership positions in sports organizations are mainly occupied by men, including in sports traditionally considered as feminine and which have become feminised (e.g. gymnastics and dance); c) masculinised sports and its male athletes have much more attention and recognition from the media than female athletes; d) sports journalism continues to be predominantly produced and managed by men; e) some sports spectatorships cultures are marked by rituals and interactions that resort to masculine tribalism, often leading to aggressive and violent behaviours. Gender discrimination in sport is somehow socially normalised and accepted through a dis- course that essentialises the embodied sexual differences between genders. This gender dis- course legitimises the exclusion of women in some sports modalities and traps female bodies in sociocultural constructions as less able to exercise and engage in sport, or as the second and weaker version of the ideal masculine body. However, there are signs that the context of sport may be changing. The European Union and some national governments have made an effort to promote gender equality and diversity by fostering the adoption of gender equality codes/policies in different modalities and in in- ternational and local sports organizations. These new policies aim to increase female partic- ipation and recognition in sport, their access to leadership positions and involvement in the decision-making in sport structures. Additionally, the number of women practising non-com- petitive sport and as sports spectators have started growing, leading to new representations of sport and challenging the role of women in such a context. Finally, different body constructions and the emergence of alternative embodied femininities and masculinities are also challeng- ing how athletes of both genders experience their bodies and sports practice. Yet, research is scarce about the impact of these changes/challenges in the sports context. This conference will focus on mapping gender relations in sport and its management by taking into account the different modalities, contexts, institutional policies, organizational structures and actors (e.g. athletes, spectators, media professionals, sport decision makers and man- agers). It will treat sport and its management as one avenue where gender segregation and inequality occurs, but also adopt such as a space that presents an opportunity for change and does so as a widely applicable topic whose traits and culture are reflected in organizations and work more broadly. In this sense, the conference is interested in theoretical and empirical research work that may explore, but are not limited to the following issues: • Women representativeness in sports modalities and in sport organizational structures in different countries; • Women and management accounting in sport organizations; • The gender regimes that (re)produce different sports policies, modalities, and institu- tions in sport; • The stories of resistance/conformity of women that already occupy different roles in sport contexts; • The challenges and impact of conventional and new body representations in sports institutions and including athletes of both genders; • The discourses of masculinities in sport and its effect on women and men athletes; • The emergence of nationalism and populist discourses in political and governments states and their impact on the (re)shaping of masculinity and femininity constructions in sport; • The gendered transformations of the spectators' gaze in what concerns different sports modalities; • The effects of new groups of sports spectators on gender relations in sport; • The discourses in media and its participation in the sports gender (in)equality; • The impact of new technologies, and new practices of training/coaching in the body- work and identities of athletes of both genders.

The Handbook of Gender and Education brings together leading scholars on gender and education to provide an up-to-date and broad-ranging guide to the field. It is a comprehensive overview of different theoretical positions on equity issues in schools. The contributions cover all sectors of education from early years to higher education; curriculum subjects; methodological and theoretical perspectives; and gender identities in education. Each chapter reviews, synthesises and provides a critical interrogation of key contemporary themes in education. This approach ensures that the book will be an indispensable source of reference for a wide range of readers: students, academics and practitioners. The first section of the Handbook, Gender Theory and Methodology, outlines the various (feminist) perspectives on researching and exploring gender and education. The section critiques the notion of gender as a category in educational research and considers recent trends, evident especially in the gender and underachievement debates, to locate gender difference solely within biology. This section provides the broad background upon which the issues and debates in the other sections can be situated. Section two, Gender and Education, considers the differing ways in which gender has been shown to impact upon the opportunities and experiences of pupils/students, teachers and other adults in the different sectors of education. It also includes a chapter on single-sex schooling. Section three, Gender and School Subjects, comprises chapters that cover gender issues within the teaching and learning of particular school subjects (for example, maths, literacy, and science). It also includes topics such as sex education and assessment. The chapters in section four, Gender, identity and educational sites, address up-to-date issues which have a long history in terms of explorations into gender and educational opportunities. More recent inclusions in the debates, such as disability, sexuality, and masculinities are discussed alongside the more traditional concerns of ′race′, social class and femininities. The final section, Working in Schools and Colleges, illuminates the working lives of teachers and academics. The chapters cover such topics as school culture, career progression and development, and the gendered identities of professionals within educational institutions. The contributors to this book have been selected by the editors as authorities in their specific area of gender and education and are drawn from the international scholarly community.

This dissertation provides new knowledge about gender, nuclear weapons and disarmament. Previous feminist research has shown that in contexts where positive associations are made between military strength, masculinity and nuclear weapon possession, it is hard to imagine nuclear renunciation and disarmament as anything other than potential emasculation or feminization. Meanwhile, empirically based feminist theorization about gender, nuclear renunciation and disarmament remains a blind spot. This dissertation uses Sweden as a case to analyze nuclear weapon renunciation and disarmament from a feminist angle. As one of the countries that had the opportunity to acquire nuclear weapons – and considered doing so for some time – before deciding to become engaged with international disarmament aims instead, Sweden is an interesting case to study. The empirical focus is on disarmament policymaking in relation to the Swedish nuclear weapon debate (1954–1968) and the submarine crisis (1981–1989). The study draws on a broad set of primary sources, ranging from government speeches and parliamentary records to media output including comics and personal correspondence and diaries. Approaching the nuclear weapon debate and the submarine crisis as arenas for debating disarmament policy, and understanding disarmament policymaking as historically situated and marked by gendered, nationalized and sexualized power structures in specific contexts, the dissertation contributes empirical and theoretical insights relevant to feminist IR theory, and to nuclear history and IR studies more broadly. Contrary to previous feminist theorizing about disarmament as associated with femininity and/or emasculation, my findings suggest that Swedish disarmament policy was co-constructed with certain forms of masculinity, and that alternative policy discourses and identity representations were feminized and sidelined to the margins. The dissertation suggests that rather than assuming preconceived linkages between nuclear weapons possession and masculinity on the one hand, and disarmament and femininity on the other, it is necessary to challenge such binary conceptualizations and investigate how masculinities and femininities, and nuclear weapon and disarmament policy, have been co-constructed in specific historical contexts. The opposite, to depart from preconceived conceptualizations about gender and policy not only contributes to the reconstruction of gender, but also rules out alternatives to nuclearized security strategies and nuclearized masculinity. The dissertation provides a methodological and theoretical framework for further research on the making of disarmament policy from a feminist perspective.

International audience ; This article examines the logics behind the tenacious persistence of gender inequalities in French civil service careers, based on 95 biographical interviews conducted with civil servants in upper-middle management and executive positions between 2011 and 2013. The study combines attention to the consequences of the organizational context with analysis of the interplay between gender and class, particularly focusing on how managers and executives appropriate equality policies. While family background has differential impacts on women's and men's educational paths and orientations, we find that governmental administrative bureaucracies also make strong contributions to the production of such differences through the rules and norms that equality policy struggles to change, especially in a time of austerity and deepening "new public management" reforms. While most managers and executives of both sexes tend to deny the organizational and social causes of inequality, the diffusion of egalitarian norms fosters the expression of gender consciousness by a minority of women, and reshapes mainstream managerial masculinities and femininities. ; Este artículo examina las lógicas detrás de la tenaz persistencia de las desigualdades de género en las carreras del servicio público en Francia, basado en 95 entrevistas biográficas realizadas con funcionarios en puestos de alta dirección y ejecutivos entre 2011 y 2013. El estudio combina la atención a las consecuencias del contexto organizacional con análisis de la interacción entre género y clase, centrándose especialmente en la forma en que los gerentes y los ejecutivos se apropian de las políticas de igualdad. Si bien los antecedentes familiares tienen impactos diferenciales en las trayectorias y orientaciones educativas de mujeres y hombres, encontramos que las burocracias administrativas gubernamentales también contribuyen fuertemente a la producción de tales diferencias a través de las reglas y normas que las políticas de igualdad luchan por cambiar, especialmente en tiempos de austeridad e intensificación de las reformas de la "nueva gestión pública".
