This paper explores a new perspective on the problem of the origins of the Venetian settlements before Venice's birth. With an archaeological viewpoint, the author considers the recent excavation data from Torcello (2012-2013 campaigns), integrating modern debates on ecological degradation and anthropological theory of materiality. The attempt is to reconsider the process of Europeanization through the formation of new settlements in the Venetian lagoons at the end of the Roman period. The paper focuses on the relationship between the environment and the societal structures from Late Antiquity to the Early Middle ages. During this critical period of flux, it is possible to study how ethnic and social groups developed a new social geography and how new political systems and different trade networks shaped the "rising Venice".

The text proposes a comparison between the fortifications (bunkers and batteries) erected during the decade 1936-45 along the Mediterranean coasts of Spain and Italy and the network of defense architecture built in modern times. The needs to considering both architectural and landscape Heritage gives opportunity for new debate concerning the matter of conservation. In particular because those latest elements are the oldest armored ruins of modern 20th-century architecture. This group of bunkers and coastal and anti-aircraft batteries is called Muro Mediterráneo for its formal and functional affinity with the Atlantic Wall built by the German army during World War II (circa 1942) along the coast from France to Norway. The comparison with the "network of sentinel", erected by the Christian kingdoms in the Modern Age (XVI-XVIII sec.) along the Mediterranean coast for his defense, showed similar design criteria, location, functionality and materiality, however, while the 'sentinels' are protected by laws, the contemporary casemates are not. Among these, the differences are (without considering the age difference) as the towers have strong volumes emerging from the profile of the territory while bunkers and batteries (with similar geometric models) are mimetically integrated with the topography of the places where they are inserted. The elements of the Mediterráneo Wall form a new anthropic landscape which can be considered a monument for its allegory of tomb and memorial at the same time.

Current concepts of biopoetics deal with the analogy between evolution theory and literature as well as with the mutual challenges of evolution and aesthetics. These approaches do not take into account the fact that the relationship between bios and the scientific, anthropological and cultural knowledge is not given, i.e. it is not necessary in the metaphysical sense of being unavoidable. Bios is life in itself. Through the concept of "bio-poetics" I thus intend to deny the homology of the domains of bios and poetics, in order to find a method that does not capture life through the aprioris of conceptual frameworks. The affirmative biopolitics by Roberto Esposito, referring to the power and politics of life itself, opens up methodological perspectives for conceiving an "aesthetics of living" which, analogously, is not modelled according to exterior rules based on moral, political, social, scientific or poetological frameworks. Thus, the dynamics of living exceeds such schemes revealing itself as exceeding the operations which produce knowledge. Aesthetics means therefore the activity of material techniques that make visible the traces of life inscribed in the materiality of writings or of pictures. From these premises, I reconceive the bond between knowledge and literature referring to contemporary literary theories and analysing poetical processes and figures such as indeterminacy in literary texts of the 19th and 20th century written in Germany, France and Italy. Eventually, this reading of literary texts demonstrates the fictional production of an "other" knowledge about the dynamics of bios, evolving from the aesthetics of literature.

; By situating in the critical framework of platform capitalism and adopting the socio-material approach, we investigate the capital-work-nature contradiction embodied in the digital. Thus, this research aim to highlight the socio-materiality of the digital, with a critique to the dematerialisation of the productive process as a result of digital technologies. On the contrary, this thesis make explicit the exploitation of work and nature along the global value chains of the platform capitalism. This hypothesis was developed on the basis of the case of platformisation of work in the urban spaces: the food delivery in Bologna and the ride-hailing in Lisbon. Both these cases show the persistance of contradictory and ambivalent process, for which the public actor and policy-makers (in our case the Municipality of Bologna and the Portuguese parliament) have tried to regulate the gig economy. But the process of platformization in the urban spaces are, at once, cause-and-effect of two more elements of the socio-materiality of the digital: the degradation of work in the productive nodes in the extra-urban spaces and the ecological impact. Thus, we identified the "digital propagation" as the socio-material infrastracture of platform capitalism, since it is a direct contribution to the increment of the exploitation of work and nature in the contemporary phase of capitalism. On the basis of a multi-situated etnography, we adopt a qualitative methodology, in particualar the in-depth interview to qualified witness (specifically workers, policy-makers, union representatives, activists). The field research was conducted between 2019 and 2020.

; The desire to make the Teaching of Restoration in the degree courses in Architecture more professional and incisive, has led the writer to establish, by means of an agreement, a stable relationship with the Superintendence for Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Palermo, city in which one operates. This agreement was implemented in the Restoration Workshops of the Monuments of the Laurea LM- 4 in Course of Architecture in Palermo and in the preparation of the thesis. Through the analysis of the two cases investigated (Monastery of St. Caterina d' Alessandria, Barracks of the Carabinieri Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, located in the complex of the S. Giacomo dei Militari) it is specified the opportunities and problems of such relationships, however necessary for a restoration that truly aspires to preserve both the values and the materiality of the heritage, while at the same time protecting the sustainability of the method used.

[EN] The hinterland of Rimini is characterized by the presence of many castles, but the fortress of San Leo is certainly the most representative because of its position and the different constructive contributions that over time have updated its appearance and military functions. Cited by Dante and Machiavelli for the impervious nature on which it stands, its origin dates back to the early Middle Ages. It was rehashed following the imprint of Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the fifteenth century, restored by Giuseppe Valadier at the end of the eighteenth century and converted to a prison in 1631. A peculiarity that makes the studies on the fortress of San Leo absolutely interesting is the treatment of the external architectural surfaces of which there is ample documentation in the historical archives and of which there are multiple uses in the various areas of the factory; the research aims to offer useful knowledge for the subsequent conservation and restoration project. The theme, completely original, arises from indirect investigations of a documentary and iconographic nature, conducted at the State Archives of Pesaro, Florence, Rome, the Central State Archive and the Vatican Secret Archive, which repeatedly refer in the accounting of works, starting from the seventeenth century, the execution of plasters executed outside the monument. The interpretative tension of the archival documents and the drawings continued by looking for a direct comparison between historical information and materiality of the fortress, in order to identify a correspondence between historical data and constructive reality. It emerges clearly that the external surfaces of many parts of the fortress were treated and finished with plaster since its origins, probably due to the exposure to atmospheric agents; therefore a rethinking of what is reported in the literature is necessary both in terms of interpretative profile of the fortress, and about how its image was perceived over the centuries ; Galli, C.; Tosarelli, A. La necesidad de considerar el patrimonio arquitectónico y paisajístico da la oportunidad para un nuevo debate sobre el tema de la conservación.

; The historical analysis of museums' Public History practices brings the relation between science and public use of history – often regarded as antithetical - into the historiographical dimension. In order to reflect on the social and political implications of these types of narration of the past, our research reconstructs the formation and development of the collection of the Great War sources from Milan Museum of Risorgimento between the two World Wars. By taking the standpoint of Cultural History, our research questions the role that the historical imagery, embodied in a museum installation, has had in the process of nationalization of the masses in Italy. The follow-up on the figure and work of Antonio Monti (Director, 1925-45) enabled us to frame the process of formation and development of the War Archive-Museum within a social, political and scientific context that clarifies the knowledge gathered so far about the dynamics between center and periphery, as well as about the phases of the memory of war. Besides the study of documentary sources of various nature from Milan's Civiche Raccolte Storiche (eg. paper documents, correspondence, memorabilia, graphics), the research made use of published sources (brochures, volumes, periodics) and proper archival sources. Among the primary archival sources, the main ones are the registers, card files, catalogs, and the other sets of documentation produced by the museum. The material and immaterial aspects of these sources have been analyzed from both a qualitative and a quantitative point of view. Starting from the archive analysis, from the study of the document management system, and finanlly from the relation between organized and described space, the museum practices concerning the Great War narration have been mainly construed as a material organization of the space (respectively in the archive, in the library, and in the museum). The museum history of the sources reshapes the relational network that gives meaning to the preserved historic heritage, shifting the focus from the immateriality of the representations to the materiality of the sources. On the other hand, the interpretative synthesis made use of anthropological cathegories: within the continuous exchange between reality and imagination, the museum acts as a resignification device that, through the actions of gathering, organizing and displaying, modifies the relational network between the sources, therefore changing their meaning. The history museum enshrines a social pact with the public through the gift, and becomes the scenery of a rite of passage that accomodates the reaggregation of private memories into the public dimension of the history of the nation. Through this rite, the meaning of the war experience is turned from a traumatic event linked to mourning, into a rigeneration myth, thus continuing the action of the Risorgimento. In conclusion, the analysis of the Milan case has allowed us to highlight the specificity of relational networks, unravelling the different meanings hidden by the oleographic representation consistent with the "totalitarian memory" imposed by the Fascist regime. Lastly, the scientific approach emerging from such practices of public use of history has been identified in the production of instruments that allow one to account for the spatial movement of the sources during their museum history.

; The research aimed at studying and analysing the contemporary art publishing system in Milan during the Thirties, on the basis of a mapping of the specialised book production with a major focus on its forms, mechanisms and leading figures. The work spanned a preliminary phase designed to identifying the study materials, to defining the research boundaries and fields in a quite unusual historiographical perspective, poised between history of art and publishing, on a ground where the dynamics related to the artistic promotion and its consumption, to the publishing market and to the book production chain are mutually intertwined. Because of their peculiarities, such as the material profile as well as the target audience, art books prove to be products with distinct features and issues within the publishing industry. In the Thirties, such specificity interact with a crucial debate on the identity of contemporary art, prefiguring a new historical context characterised by the unprecedented development of editorial initiatives aimed at the codification and dissemination of the values of the current figurative culture. The entire study was based on the systematic mapping of publications issued between 1929 and 1943 – a chronological arc identified as the most congruent for the purposes of the investigation – carried out according to the analysis of coeval sources, such as bibliographic guides and bulletins, book sales catalogues, specialised libraries records. The evaluation and cataloguing of each editions took into account specific parameters selected depending on the nature of art books and more specifically considering the central role of photomechanical reproductions in the production chain. All information was gathered in a database converted into an organised repertory with technical entries and indexes of editorial presences. The results of this broad census led the research considering the great issues of the productive system, the emerging literary genres, and the reproduction and printing processes of images, making references to theory as well as to texts, printed and archive sources, until broadening the field of investigation to include a comparison with the related Italian and foreign coeval publishing. The thesis is thus divided into three main parts, introduced by an attempt to define the forms of contemporary art books and by a check of the performance of editorial production. This section shed light on an existing periodization within the chronological extremes closely intertwined with a wide variety of ongoing dynamics directly affecting the publishing sector, among which the consolidation of a new collecting, the contextual developments in the field of art politics and the technological advances of the graphic industry are just some of the most relevant. The analysis of the publishing system chiefly looked to define the players, actually the figures personally involved in the production chain, thus outlining for the first time a structured map of publishers, photoengravers, typographers and printers. In fact, among the prerogatives of the sector, one which undoubtedly stands out is the fragmentation of the entrepreneurial figures ascribable to the high specialization standards which illustrated books require and to the creation of which contribute multiple professional profiles and skills. The panorama of the publishers itself revealed a remarkable diversification corresponding to a consistent permeability to the context of the galleries and the art market as well as to the context of magazines, thus making it possible to reconsider places which according to historiography live apart. Shifting the goal to the publishing production, namely to the books object of the investigation, the work addressed the issues related to the forms of dissemination of new figurative values, in response to the coeval ongoing process aiming at their accomplished definition. In keeping with the mapping, and tapping into a comprehensive overview and a wealth of aspects typical of the product book considered in the research, the perspective aimed at highlighting the emerging genres, such as the book-catalogue, the panorama, the series of artist monographs, while reflecting on their fortune, among gaps, drifts, continuity and innovative elements, also based on a comparison with international models. Finally, a key part of the work consisted in examining the photomechanical reproduction and printing processes employed in the production of books: a crucial issue inherently belonging to the specificity of art publishing – based on reproductions and their mise en page – that, however, appears largely overlooked by historiography. Mindful of the technical equipment, the processing steps and the graphic results, the research carried out confirmed the value of this investigation line, while shedding light on the role that the technological innovations achieved in the Thirties played not only in determining the materiality and grammar of images, and hence the reception of art, but the very publishing forms. Significantly new features emerged, in particular, in relation to the colour reproduction and its renovated, quickly booming commercial systems, such as fotocolor, whose first diffusion this work retraced. The appendix presents the final catalogue of books entries as well as indexes and lists, including the complete listing of publishing series.
