Using state-level data for the period 1990 through 2007, we estimate the effect of legalizing medical marijuana on suicide rates. Our results suggest that the passage of a medical marijuana law is associated with an almost 5 percent reduction in the total suicide rate, an 11 percent reduction in the suicide rate of 20- through 29-year-old males, and a 9 percent reduction in the suicide rate of 30- through 39-year-old males. Estimates of the relationship between legalization and female suicides are less precise and are sensitive to functional form.

Objective. To analyze the role of stakeholders to three alternative strategies to improve processes and practices regarding the regulation, assessment, and management oforthopaedic medical devices in Mexico. Materials and methods. The study was based on document analysis and 17 structured interviews with multiple key actors within the Mexican health system to inform a stakeholder analysis aiming at assessing the political feasibility of these strategies. Results. Central level government agencies, those with a relation to quality of care, were identified as most relevant stakeholders to influence the adaption and application of the strategies. Major barriers identified are financial and human resources, and organisational culture towards reform. Conclusion. Discussed strategies are political feasible. However, solving identified barriers is crucial to achieve changes directed to improve outputs and outcomes of medical device life cycle and positively influence the quality of health care and the health system's performance.

Based on ethnographic fieldwork among Danes undergoing CT scans as part of follow-up testing for potential lung cancer, we explore how access to technologies generates diagnostic uncertainty and trends of continuous testing. Our research is set in the context of a welfare state that has cultivated forms of government whose public health branches focus on early diagnosis and cancer control. Many studies on biotechnologies emphasise subject-making and power relations. Inspired by the work of Veena Das, we adopt an approach that focuses on the entanglement of diagnostic investigations with everyday life. We argue that being followed establishes a mode of being which we call 'in the meantime'. Life in the meantime is equally characterised by a dramatic mode of being—that is, waiting for death—and an ambiguous mode of being: feeling quite well. As with any life crisis, it involves some sense of agency. We show in this paper how life in the meantime informs an ordinary ethics that encourages three ethical concerns in everyday life: firstly, how to inhabit life in the meantime? Secondly, what good is the testing for? And finally, what is a good death?

The broad objective of this paper is to determine the effect of work-life balance on performance of female medical practitioners of federal government owned medical centres in Edo state. Specifically, this study seeks to ascertain the effect of employee support on the commitment of married female medical practitioners of university of Benin teaching hospital and Irrua specialist teaching hospital. Survey research design was adopted for the study, a sample size of two hundred and eighty (280) was used for the study, Krejcie and Morgan, (1970) sampling technique was used for the study, the data collection tool employed by the researchers was the questionnaire, while the analysis of the data was done using the linear regression analysis. The findings revealed that employee support impacts the commitment of married female medical practitioners of university of Benin teaching hospital and Irrua specialist teaching hospital, Edo state since (F = 964.986; R2 = 0.836; P <.05). The researchers therefore concluded that work-life balance impacts employee performance of the institutions in focus. Based on the foregoing, the researchers recommended the enactment of favourable work-life balance policies by the institutions in focus and the approval of emergency leave for female (married) medical practitioners of the institutions in focus because of their role in the family.

This paper provides a reflective analysis of the nature of normative critiques of law generally, and within medical law specifically. It first seeks to establish the context within which critical analysis of law and legal measures takes place, and develops an argument that critiques should focus on political norms. Entailed in this claim is the contention that positions that seek to address controversial social problems can not resort simply to moral philosophy. It then provides a brief account of political liberalism that can contain and expose normative constraints on questions of moral and social contention. The focus then moves to a more direct reflection on medico-legal analysis. Considering both medical law as a discipline, and the study of end-of-life issues, the argument highlights the range of relevant issues that must be accounted for, and addresses the question of whether these are well conceived as ones of medical law. It is argued that a political framing offers a good general analytic context, but that when working in legal sub-disciplines analysts risk allowing 'locally' pertinent norms to dominate or unduly constrain wider debate.
