The density and the particularities that Iron Age hillforts show in Galicia turned them into main elements in territory organization and in social symbolism throughout the centuries. The lasting and irregular process of the disappearance of the closed hillfort model towards a network of open settlements in the valleys and plains seems to have been completed in the Early Middle Ages, when villae, predecessors of villages and parishes of feudal times, were already the hegemonic population centers. In this paper we will study the social role that hillforts had in the Sarria valley at that time, basing our analysis on documents from the Samos documental collection and on the study of the landscape. ; La densidad y las particularidades que los poblados de la Edad del Hierro tienen en Galicia los han convertido en elementos estructuradores del territorio y portadores de una fortísima carga simbólica a lo largo de los siglos, hasta hoy. El duradero e irregular proceso de desaparición del modelo castral hacia una red campesina de asentamientos abiertos en los valles y llanuras parece haberse culminado en la Alta Edad Media, cuando las villae, predecesoras de las aldeas y parroquias de época feudal, son ya la célula de población hegemónica. En el presente trabajo analizaremos el papel social que tenían los castros en el valle del Sarria en esa altura basándonos en el análisis de los documentos del tumbo de Samos y en el estudio histórico del paisaje. La propaganda política durante la Edad Media utilizó en ocasiones a las mujeres como arma arrojadiza entre facciones, dándose así la paradoja de que las figuras femeninas, excluidas del espacio político, eran claves en épocas de conflicto. Para demostrarlo se analizan tres momentos cruciales en la monarquía castellana, en los que se producen enfrentamientos entre hermanos por cuestiones sucesorias, y en los que se utiliza a las mujeres de la familia como medio para desprestigiar al contrario. En el último tercio del siglo XI, la rivalidad entre Sancho II y Alfonso VI, tuvo en medio a su hermana Urraca de Zamora; a mediados del siglo XIV, el enfrentamiento entre Pedro I y Enrique II, utilizó a varias mujeres de la familia como medio de propaganda; en la segunda mitad del siglo XV, la pugna entre Enrique IV e Isabel de Castilla, envolvió también a las mujeres de la familia. ; During the Middle Ages Spanish monarchs and nobles developed a form of political propaganda in which women were used as weapons against their political rivals. The result was that female figures, excluded from the political arena, took a great role in problematic periods. To illustrate this point, I analyze three cases from crucial times of the Kingdom of Castile, when in the fights for the throne between siblings, women of the immediate family were involved. One, which took place in the second half of the XIth century, involved the rivalry between Sancho the IInd and Alfonso the VIth. Another which centered on the rivalry between Pedro the Irst and Enrique the IInd, occurred in the middle of the XIVth century. And the third, which took place in the second half of the XVth century, pitted Enrique the IVth and Isabel of Castile.

El objetivo de este artículo es analizar las dimensiones espaciales del conflicto político en las ciudades castellanas de fines de la Edad Media, tomando como referencia la forma en que el espacio fue apropiado durante las movilizaciones populares y las transformaciones sufridas en el espacio político durante el movimiento comunero. Se argumentará que las distintas modalidades de apropiación del espacio por los comunes son significativas en si mismas y permiten conocer, al menos en parte, las concepciones políticas de quienes las practicaban. ; The aim of this article is to analyze the spatial dimensions of the political conflict in the Castilian towns in the latter Middle Ages, taking as reference how the space was used during popular mobilizations and how the political space was transformed during The War of The Communities of Castile. In the western European towns the presence of members of the nobility in their institutions of local government was not a very widespread phenomenon during the Late Middle Ages. It can only be perceived in a great scale in very few regions, mainly in the kingdom of Castile and in Italy. In this article the author gives account of the main signs of the political control that the nobility exercised over the institutions of local government in the Castilian towns. He then pays attention to the important differences that in this respect existed during the Late Middle Ages between these towns and those of other kingdoms of western Europe, where the nobility didn't participate in the institutions of local government. He proposes some exemples taken from the kingdoms of the Crown of Aragon, the German Empire, France and England, leaving out of his consideration the case of the urban republics in Italy because of their specifical character, derived from their important degree of autonomy. ; En las ciudades de la Europa occidental durante el período bajomedieval la presencia de miembros de la nobleza en los órganos de gobierno local fue un fenómeno poco frecuente, que sólo se constata a gran escala en unos pocos ámbitos, de entre los que cabe destacar dos: la Corona de Castilla e Italia. En este artículo el autor da cuenta de las principales manifestaciones del control político ejercido por la nobleza sobre los órganos de gobierno de las ciudades castellanas. Y presta atención a las importantes diferencias que a este respecto se dieron en los siglos bajomedievales entre estas ciudades y las de otros reinos europeos occidentales, donde la nobleza no participó en los órganos de gobierno urbano. Propone para ello ejemplos tomados de los reinos de la Corona de Aragón, el Imperio alemán, Francia e Inglaterra, dejando fuera de consideración el caso de las "repúblicas urbanas" italianas por su especificidad, derivada de su elevado grado de autonomía.

Tomando como referente la ciudad de Burgos, pero sin olvidar el resto de las ciudades castellanas, trataré de acercarme a la realidad de la fiscalidad de ámbito municipal como un escenario preferente de la construcción de modelos específicos de identidad política urbana en tres sentidos: en primer lugar, el que hace de la fiscalidad un elemento clave en el proceso de construcción de la identidad urbana participada, como demuestra el relevante papel de la fiscalidad en los orígenes, evolución y consolidación de los sistemas de poder urbanos, como responsable en una parte muy importante de las categorías de inclusión/exclusión de vecindad, como catalizadora de adhesiones identitarias frente a otros poderes y especialmente frente a la Corona, en un doble proceso de defensa y adquisición de singulares derechos y exenciones fiscales o de especial contribución a la mayor y mejor honra y al bien común del rey y reino, o como elemento fundamental destinado a proporcionar un elevado grado de cohesión y definición política a la propia ciudad y a su espacio territorial. En segundo lugar, el que convierte a la fiscalidad en la clave de los procesos que conducen a la significación y definición identitaria grupal propia de cada uno de los segmentos sociales que componen la comunidad urbana (patriciado, pecheros, vasallos, etc.) y su diferente posicionamiento frente al poder (la fiscalidad como expresión del conflicto). Y, finalmente, en tercer y último lugar, la fiscalidad como elemento fundamental del discurso legitimador del poder, clave del buen y mal gobierno, de la justificación del gasto y de la legitimación de la «deuda».

Research conducted in earlier works studied the development of Navarre's urban network until the beginning of the 13th century and revealed it to be both dense and complex. Royal interests, land control, and the consolidation of preferred communication routes were the underlying causes for this complexity. However, the elements that contributed to this complexity differ from those that led to the development of the hierarchical urban system from the 13th century until the end of the Middle Ages. The objective of this paper is to analyse the transformation that occurred from 1219 to the beginning of the 16th century. The paper highlights the consolidation of four, at most five, focal urban sites, with a particular emphasis on three –Pamplona, Tudela, and Estella– of which one is defined by its political, administrative, economic and ecclesiastical importance and the other two by their administrative and economic importance. Ultimately, the development of the urban network towards the end of the Middle Ages was propelled by the following essential points: the urban hierarchy of the kingdom and its system of operation acquired a simpler form that was in accordance with the essential traits of the urban realities and dimensions of the kingdom itself. ; Tras el análisis del desarrollo de la red urbana de Navarra hasta los inicios del siglo XIII, realizado en trabajos anteriores, se observaba una trama densa. Ésta se había formado al hilo de diversos condicionantes: el interés regio, el control del espacio y la consolidación de rutas preferentes de comunicación. Se intuía además que, a partir de ese momento y hasta el final de la Edad media, los elementos decisivos para la articulación de un sistema urbano jerarquizado serían otros. The bullet of the images has been a point of reference in the iconographic repertoires. As an agalmatofiia, the phenomenon has persisted with the use of recurring characteristics, as active topes enriched by the interpretations specific to each time. This article looks at full-scale examples as a sign of the dynamic debate, which encouraged the position to be taken in front of images, ranging from aesthetic decoration to moral behaviour designed by church power for faiths. From Venus to Maria, between xii and xiii there was a dense and complex tour of the images' love demonstrations, in which the Church participated not only by incorporating standards and intermediaries. The Military Order of Saint John sent large amounts of money from Spain to the Eastern Mediterranean during the Middle Ages. They did not amount to large sums during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. However, they increased greatly in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The Aragonese, Catalonian and Navarrese Hospitallers were the ones that paid the most money. In contrast, the Castilian and Portuguese Hospitallers gave less. The Order of St. John sent not only money but also horses, wheat and arms. ; La Orden Militar de San Juan envió grandes cantidades de dinero desde España hasta el Mediterráneo Oriental durante la Edad Media. No fueron grandes sumas durante los siglos XII y XIII. Sin embargo, aumentaron mucho en los siglos XIV y XV. Los hospitalarios aragoneses, catalanes y navarros fueron los que más dinero pagaban. This article aims to study the demographically semi-urban communities which dotted the Galician coastline since its medieval origins. Despite being more common than other more populated towns in Galicia (as elsewhere), scholarship has often relegated them in research due to their relatively low demographic, economic and political relevance. We will examine the village of Muros as a case study. It was originally under the jurisdictional lordship of the archbishop of Santiago. Despite attempts by the Crown to foster its urban development through a charter as a port-town, it will not reach this status until the end of the Middle Ages. Its nature as a lordship, its social make-up, maritime condition and, indirectly, the Crown are all factor which will determine the development of its institutions, officials, jurisdiction, government activity and management of resources. ; El presente artículo pretende aproximarse a la realidad de los núcleos, en lo demográfico semiurbanos, que salpicaban la costa gallega desde sus orígenes medievales. Pese a ser en número los más abundantes en Galicia, y no solo en Galicia, la escasa relevancia demográfica, económica y política de estos ha tendido a relegarlos a un segundo plano en la investigación, que ha mostrado mayor predilección por las capitales de provincia. El caso objeto de estudio es la villa de Muros, perteneciente al señorío jurisdiccional del arzobispo de Santiago, que, pese a los intentos forales de la Corona para impulsar su desarrollo urbano como villa portuaria, no adquiere esta condición hasta la baja Edad Media. Su condición señorial, entramado social, su condición marítima e, indirectamente, la Corona determinarán la forma adquirida por sus instituciones, oficiales, competencias, su actividad gubernativa, y la gestión de sus recursos.

El presente artículo pretende describir cómo evolucionó el gobierno de la ciudad de Guadalajara durante la Baja Edad Media a través del análisis de las disputas políticas entre caballeros y pecheros, así como estudiar el papel que jugaron en tales conflictos tanto la Corona como la poderosa familia Mendoza. Este periodo de constantes enfrentamientos finalizó con la derrota pechera y con la instauración del regimiento en Guadalajara, controlado por el estamento de los caballeros, quienes a su vez acabaron formando parte de la red clientelar de los Mendoza, que llegó a dominar el municipio como si fuera uno de sus señoríos ; This article aims to describe how the government of the city of Guadalajara evolved during the late Middle Ages through the analysis of the political disputes between the lesser nobility and the commoners, as well as studying the role played by the Crown and the powerful Mendoza family in such conflicts. This period of constant confrontations ended with the defeat of the commoners and with the establishment of the regiment in Guadalajara, controlled by the estate of the lesser nobility, who in turn ended up being part of the Mendoza network of patronage, which came to control the municipality as if it was one of their dominions

Along with their role in the defence of Christianity and territorial control, the Military Orders also carried out another function inherent to their nature, hospitality, which in the Middle Ages meant the assistance of the poor, the sick and pilgrims. In the Iberian Peninsula, the Order of Santiago stood out in this area and they included the redemption of captive prisoners in al-Andalus and the Maghreb as a complementary task to their main objective. To carry out these activities, the Order created an important network of hospitals spread throughout their own domains. One of those centres was the hospital of Alarcón (Cuenca), founded arround 1203. After a period of decline it was rebuilt at the end of the fifteenth century in the context of reform which the religious orders undertook during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. With the use of the descriptions in the Order's "visitation books", archaeological analysis of its remains, and the use of new technologies such as virtual reconstruction, we will try to achieve a better understanding of the hospital at the end of the Middle Ages. ; Además de su cometido en la defensa de la Cristiandad y control territorial, las órdenes militares tuvieron otra función intrínseca a su propia naturaleza: la hospitalidad, entendida en la Edad Media como la asistencia a pobres, enfermos y peregrinos. En la Península Ibérica, destacó en esta faceta la Orden de Santiago, que añadió la redención de cautivos prisioneros en al-Andalus y el Magreb como una premisa más dentro de su labor hospitalaria. Para sostener esta actividad la Orden creó una importante red de hospitales y enfermerías extendidos por todos sus territorios. Uno de estos centros fue el hospital de Alarcón (Cuenca), fundado en torno a 1203, y que tras un periodo de decandencia fue mandado recontruir a finales del siglo XV en el marco reformador que las órdenes religiosas experimentaron bajo el reinado de los Reyes Católicos.
