The authors analyze the challenge faced by criminology in the present century, marked by political, social and economic transformations, which constitutes a space of great theoretical challenges that can not be ignored. New criminal misconduct needs to be observed and understood to reorient objectives in criminological politics. They aim to determine if the theoretical and methodological systems of specific criminologies adequately explain the contemporary dynamics of crime and criminal justice, in order to determine if criminology needs adjustments to face a new reality. ; Los autores analizan el desafío que afronta la criminología en el siglo actual, marcado por las transformaciones políticas, sociales y económicas que constituye un espacio de grandes retos teóricos que no pueden ser soslayados. Las neoconductas criminales aparecidas requieren observarse y comprenderse para redireccionar los objetivos en política criminológica. Pretenden dilucidar si los sistemas teóricos y metodológicos de las criminologías específicas explican adecuadamente la dinámica contemporánea del delito y la justicia penal con la finalidad de determinar si la criminología necesita ajustes para enfrentar una nueva realidad.

The spelling of the words _eco-logy and _eco-nomics in the title is intended to emphasize that both words originated from the Greek word oikos, which means household, house, or family. Despite their common origin, never have two disciplines diverged so dramatically. Economic growth, aided by economic globalization, has markedly diminished natural capital, from which all other forms of capital are derived. Economic growth (without protecting the biospheric life support system) seems to be the primary goal of human society. In reality, the human economy is a subset of the biospheric life support system, which regenerates the resources that are the raw materials of the economic system. Yet political leaders continually state that the biospheric life support system cannot be protected if the possibility of doing so would adversely affect economic growth. However, growth of material goods and population cannot continue indefinitely without severe consequences. At present, many ecologists delay discussing biotic impoverishments with economists, fearing that such candor will _turn them off. The contextual framework of economists and ecologists is far from congruent, although the survival of human society, and even of the human species, depends on it.

Strong research evidence implicates housing design as a powerful factor in crimino‐genesis during the formative years of early childhood. Detailed and large‐scale investigations have revealed 38 design and layout variables that favour existing criminals and breed many new ones by impeding normal child‐rearing practices. The average age of criminals has progressively decreased and crimes have become more sadistic.It is well established that changing the deleterious designs responsible for social breakdown can halt and reverse the decay of local societies. The police report that the relevant type of design improvement allows natural community formation to replace the pre‐existing ethos of anonymity and alienation, so that crime may virtually cease, indeed, in some cases, completely so. Young children are then integrated into the community and do not grow up delinquent. This is criminal prevention, as opposed to crime prevention, which allows delinquency to develop and then tries to control its results.This paper discusses the specific design variables that are influential; the results obtained by changing them in ten estates; the reasons why government (apart from former British Prime Minister Thatcher) turns a blind eye to the design solution to crime; and the evidence for thinking that the escalating urban crisis is close to the sort of sudden change postulated by catastrophe theory.

Changes in the crimino‐legal process during the last few years have blurred the boundaries between criminal justice and children's welfare in child protection. These developments have, however, received relatively little critical attention within contemporary discourses surrounding child protection. This paper draws upon primary and secondary research findings to explore the appropriateness and effectiveness of current forensically led responses to child abuse. In particular, it questions the adequacy of existing operational constructs of justice in child protection, arguing the case for a far more comprehensive notion of 'justice for children' than presently prevails. Research evidence is reviewed suggesting that current crimino‐legally driven practices fail to achieve even the limited objectives of criminal justice, let alone the higher goals of promoting children's welfare or attaining 'justice for children'. Finally the paper explores how these findings may inform and be informed by current debates and practice in social work. While a range of policy and practice remedies are suggested, these, it is argued, must be framed with recognition of the tensions and dilemmas underlying social work in a complex and uncertain social world.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a controversial phenomenon and the link between schooling and the burgeoning occurrence of ADHD diagnoses is problematic. This paper contributes to the discussion regarding the issue by providing a literature review of the evidence on the influence of relative age effect (RAE) on being diagnosed with ADHD. Firstly, the review presents a general cross-national trend for a positive association between relative age and the probability of being diagnosed with ADHD compared to peers, thus showing that the younger-in-class children are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD. Secondly, this paper outlines and discusses the suggested explanations of the phenomenon as depicted in the reviewed literature. Finally, the paper proceeds to provide alternative frameworks for the explanation of the RAE on ADHD diagnosis that go beyond individual psychopathology and instead take into account the broader social, cultural and political contexts in which the phenomenon takes place. ; Peer reviewed
