My paper aims at investigating the politicization of aesthetics and art that began with Hegel's Lectures on Aesthetics or Fine Arts, by examining the aesthetic conceptions of some of the most representative members of the Young Hegelians (Bruno Bauer and Arnold Ruge) and of the young Karl Marx. Hegel did not develop a conservative aesthetic thought, but instead provided the Young Hegelians with a theory of the end of art, which is also a theory of the future of art in modernity. The Young Hegelians and the young Marx will inherit and further develop these ideas by grasping the political and revolutionary level of Hegel's aesthetic thought, but developing different paths towards the politicization of aesthetics. Young Hegelians; Hegel's aesthetics; End of art; Karl Marx.
The aim of this article is to outline how the strategy put by swedish authorities is ultimately rooted in some traits of swedish state-building processes. What is intended to be shown is also the fact that the concept of society stands at the core of the contention in the swedish exceptionality, both on the the side of government and on the side of social actors. Other aim of the text is to show a genealogy of both concepts of folkhem and samhället, and how they were originally intertwined with political authorities and civil servants. Finally, the article tries to describe how self-government, at the core of swedish early modernity, could be ambiguous facing the neoliberal egemony in nordic countries. Samhället; Folkhem; Frihetstiden; Agenzia sanitaria; Approccio olistico.
The concept of fontes has shown its ever decreasing suitability to reflect the richness and complexity of humanistic literature. In the fontes printed as footnotes is reflected, mechanically and almost physically, the idea of a subaltern and gregarious modernity with regard to classical thought. This article presents a different approach to the study of the humanistic text, based on the identification of cultural genealogies which display all the elements of doctrine that make up a written work at various levels. The work examined is the De republica by Lauro Quirini, a fifteenth-century political treatise in which the author consciously inserts elements of the political thought of the Latin, classical and medieval traditions to an Aristotelian base, adapting such an ensemble to the ideological circumstances of his era.
; This dissertation analyses the representation of Calcutta in the works of three postcolonial authors of Bengali origin, Amit Chaudhuri, Amitav Ghosh, and Neel Mukherjee. For these writers, Calcutta is the place in which they are aesthetically and culturally rooted, and, at the same time, the place from which they look at the global world. Although it has less economic and political relevance compared to Bombay or Delhi, Calcutta is still extremely significant in defining Indian modernity, especially from a cultural point of view. Thus, this thesis will examine the space of Calcutta from a cultural and literary perspective. In particular, it will analyse the spatial representation of the city in relation to the complex interaction between the local and the global, with the aim of emphasising the value of the local in a postcolonial context. In addition, it will look at how the authors address the issue of Bengali modernity. The thesis consists of four chapters. The first examines and summarises the theoretical context at the basis of the rest of the analysis. It considers three main theoretical frameworks: literary geography; spatial dialects; studies on the colonial, modernist and postcolonial city. The following chapters revolve around specific spatial themes. The discussion opens with an analysis of the home, and of the opposition between private and public space. The next chapter deals with the urban space as the site of the practices of modernity: flânerie, adda, and various forms of political struggle. The last chapter takes on a wider perspective and considers the relationship of Calcutta with the rest of the world.
Leopardi and the Italian language between tradition and modernity. The essay aims to illustrate the Leopardi's ideas on the crisis of the Italian language and culture of the early nineteenth century, marked by an intellectual provincialism that did not allow it to participate adequately in the development of the sciences and philosophy that characterized Europe 18th century. The lucid and disenchanted criticism of the problems affecting Italy of the Restoration is reconstructed: the gap between spoken and written language, between literature and science and between high culture and popular culture, the lack of civic sense and social cohesion, the scarce development of public opinion, cultural backwardness, lack of modernization of the language. Leopardi's critical position also has political and social significance and presents elements of evident relevance which are still of great interest to the readers of the 21st century.
The essay is focused on the start-up as a symbolic tool. Why does it take a central place in the public discourse? Which symbolic function does it play inside the institutional order of our societies? I propose to interpret the start-up as an elusive and ideological answer to the economic and anthropological saturation that has involved Western societies starting from the early eighties of the last century. The abundance state created by the alliance between Capital and political power during the thirty glorious years requires the creation of a new anthropological subject and a new social regulation system. Contrariwise, Western societies prefer to remain attached at the glorious symbolic order of modernity, based on the epic of the individual. The start-up myth re-legitimizes this narrative, hiding the hitches in the development of the social building it engenders.
Citizenship, space, boundaries. The nature of modernity Overturning the Henri Lefebvre's scheme, that still enliven a lot the geographic, sociologic and political thought in the Anglo-Saxon Countries, what it is meant here is that the space produces the society, not the vice versa. The reasoning concerns the genealogy of the modern space, of which the originating genesis is retraced, the origin of the centralized territorial Modern State and the meaning of the concept of citizenship.
; Grazia Deledda, the second Italian and the second woman ever to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926, is generally cosidered a significant, yet «regional» Italian woman writer of the turn of the century, suspended between Verismo and Decadentismo. More recently, critical studies published both in North America and Italy have underlined the relevance of Deledda's narrative for modernist discourse. A case in point is the widely neglected novel "Dopo il divorzio". Published first in 1902 at the height of a heated debate about the introduction of divorce legislation in Italy, "After the Divorce" appeared in a modified English translation in 1905, and finally in a revised Italian version in 1920 as "Naufraghi in porto". An investigation of the structural and semantic variations between the three editions in light of Louis Hay e Jean Bellemin-Noël's critique génétique will demonstrate how Deledda's cultural journey from Nuoro to Rome parallels the dialectic between the margin and the center in geographic, linguistic and cultural terms that defined the multifaceted phenomenon of Italian modernism. Moreover, "Dopo il divorzio", a novel that is deeply rooted in the Sardinian landscapes of Deledda's most famous works, emerges as a modernist opus in fieri through its intertextual dialogue with the most significant contemporary reflections on humour, including Bergson's "Le rire" (1900) to Freud's "Der Witz" (1905) and Pirandello's "Saggio sull'umorismo" (1908). Thus, a reading of "Dopo il divorzio" as a work in progress centered on contemporary theories of humor underscores Deledda's belonging to European modernism not in spite of but because of her Sardinian vantage point. An analysis of the textual and extratextual significance of "Dopo il divorzio" demonstrates how an allegedly «minor», peripheral (woman) writer, such as Deledda, who was often stigmatised on account of her regional origins, actually introduced some of the most disquieting traits of European modernism into Italian literature and society. ; Grazia Deledda, the second Italian and the second woman ever to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926, is generally cosidered a significant, yet «regional» Italian woman writer of the turn of the century, suspended between Verismo and Decadentismo. Rationalism, Politics, and Theory of Knowledge. A Contribution to Contemporary Arab-Islamic PhilosophyAbstract - The present text is a significant excerpt from the interview released in 1981 by the Moroccan philosopher Mohamed Abed Al-Jabri in the journal al-thaquafa- al-djadida [The New Culture]. The text was later revisited by Al-Jabri himself and published in 1991 with the title li'anna al-aqlaniya darura [Why rationalism is necessary] in a book on the relationship between tradition and modernity in the Arab-Islamic culture, At-turat wa-I-hadatha [Tradition and Modernity]. The interview deals with some of the central points in the contemporary debate on the social, political and cultural renewal of the Arabic world. Al-Jabri thinks that a critical perspective on Arab-Islamic culture must be developed. He maintains that in the Arab-Islamic world there is an enormous need for philosophy – discussion and rational argumentation – and for rationalism. Rationalism would contribute, among other things, to freeing politics and science from the chains of dogmatism, religion and tradition. Keywords: Arab-Islamic Culture; Rationalism; Dogmatism; Religion; Politics.
; The Franciscan textuality of Catalan-Aragonese area is an important source of the political discourse and of the construction of community identities. Among the most significant aspects emerge the discourse about the value and function of money. Since Arnau de Vilanova the currency expresses and conveys the strength and identity of a political community: through it is to define the role of economic, civil and political agents in community areas. It also puts into question an historiographical assumption: «the constellation of concepts of political modernity erupts from the denial of what had preceded itì». If this argument asserts that the lemma and the concept of «contract», defined since Hobbes, is "the genetic location" of modernity, remains untraceable the break with the "not modern ". In the relationship that connects fides, money and identity in medieval Franciscan texts that design communities of cives-fideles, the community space becomes public and legal arena, institutionalized. And in the space of the market, constituitive of the space of the community, different wills converge negotiating areas and limits of economic and financial sovereignties, but equally conscious political ones.
Realtà e memoria di una disfatta does not address either the causes of the Six Day War or the consequences that the military conflict had for Israelis and Palestinians, about which much has been written. It focuses instead on the impact of the war on Arab countries, and the weighty legacy left by the defeat of 1967, which has been much less studied. There are several references to this in the short essay by Samir Kassir, L'infelicità araba, published posthumously in Italy in 2006. In his analysis, Kassir warns against falling into the dual trap that has ensnared the Arab world for the last forty years: on the one hand the Orientalist reading that lays the blame on Islam for the delayed modernisation of this part of the world, and on the other the temptation to heap responsibility for all evils on the West. To avoid this risk, as Kassir sees it, the Arabs have to take their destiny into their own hands, shrugging off victimism and coming to terms with modernity.
