In this paper I will analyse the religious issue in the late Kantian work. I argue that Kant's reflections on Christianity have to be strictly connected with those on law and history. This connection lead us to the political theological problem which is crucial in the case of Hegel as well. In the Encyclopedia Hegel explicitly takes inspiration from Kant who thinks that the problem of that age is the relation between religion and law. That is why Kant cannot be considered a liberal thinker because religion is not a mere private question for him but it has a public importance within his modern conception of history. In this sense, I also argue that Kant's judg-ment on Christianity is more negative than that of Hegel who attributes a more positive value to religious beliefs in the history of Spirit.
Modernity is an essential trope of Western culture, and it is a seminal category for discussing the relation between the Americas and Europe; the writings collected in this volume discuss the relation between the Americas and modernity from a variety of perspectives. The opening essay focuses on the complex relations between modernity, modernism, and modernization especially in the context of cinema and visual media. In the following essays the issue of modernity and the Americas is explored in relation to specific contexts and examples in the visual arts, literature, the human and the social sciences. Among the topics: the relation between planning, urbanization, cinema and modernity, both in relation to North and South America. The volume then offers a reflection between theory, politics and aesthetics, considering the links between modernity and literary and filmic languages. Finally, the volume explicitly addresses the philosophic dimension, without forgetting the complexities of the geo-economic panorama produced by contemporary globalization.
This essay focuses on the relationship between political revolution in Modernity and the concept of time. The idea of revolution emerges from the internal forum of conscience and finds its public legitimation, in terms of an absolutized figuration, by assuming christian eschatology as its foundation. In this paper I seek to thematize this link by means of a genealogical-historical analysis.
The challenges of education, today more than in the past, invite pedagogicalreflection to combine the needs of the person with the urgency of transformingin everyday situations from late modernity. Already Bauman, in fact, had highlighted the characteristics of the modern citizen, reframing and criticizingthe very concept of citizenship. The relevant and complex theme thatenquires is to analyse the increasingly strong relationship between socialpolicies and educational policies with a view to a renewal of the welfare statewhich, in the light of the current economic crisis, has led to the emergenceof new vulnerable social categories and greater inequalities. Pedagogy, againfor that broad scope and for that idea of intrinsic planning, has worked onbehalf of the person, emphasizing some of the essential elements of thesame, such as the concept of dignity and that of identity: the first understandingas that ability to recognize others and themselves as citizens of theworld; the second, while following the dignity in a significant continuum thathas as glue the person, underlined the absolute singularity of the same, breaking down that concept of man's supremacy over its like. This paper aims to reflect on the concept of citizenship today, moving fromthe reinterpretation of Dewey and the meanings of democracy and education, declining them through a modern idea of social citizenship. The concept, introduced by Marshall, will be central to the treatment and will putitself in a new pedagogical perspective of the construction of the responsiblecitizen.
The essay proposes an itinerary into the political root of beauty. From Plato, the idea of beauty is not only metaphysical, but also aesthetic and always manifests its political root. The article considers the beauty's public space in Vitruvius and Alberti, passing through three models of the city, namely Humanistic, Baconian and Baudlerian. Hence, the idea of beauty is a constant variation on the theme and a general noun of a project path. Beauty manifests its qualitative dialectic, without synthesis, in which its dialogicity can be saved as long as Modernity does not lose its memory and tradition. Following some Valéry's remarks, the article exhorts to find the idea of classicality in Modernity: remembering the platonic idea of kosmos, it means to make beauty not only abstractly philosophical, but also political.
Max Weber's reflections on modernity still plays a pivotal role in the development of the social sciences. However, the criticism to Weber's theory formulated by non-Western philosophers and sociologists has made it necessary to delve deeper into its features. In particular, the supposed uniqueness and "exceptionality" of Western and European modernity has been questioned. Today we witness the presence of different processes of modernization, which blend in various ways specific cultural contexts and traditions with the general ("universal") traits of modernity. The essay maps out the history of the relationship between Euro-American modernity and Asian modernities, in particular Chinese modernity; great emphasis will be given to the complexity of geo-economic, cultural and political scenarios as the result of long-term processes of negotiation.
Cities in South America have always been somehow far away from modernity. This reluctance has historical reasons, since modern approaches show confused and sometimes opposed feelings towards the architectural heritage. The unfinished process of the economic modernization is deeply rooted in the geopolitics of 19th century capitalism and in the later models of dependent development. Quite often, however, scholars with different backgrounds have underlined original patterns of urban growth and socialization, the porosity noted by Benjamin being just one of the possible examples. The context of the 'peripheral modernity' of Buenos Aires makes some features of this complex connection evident. The rational grid of the streets stands out against the chaos of the blocks. Modern infrastructures have brushed off ample parts of the city, failing to impose a new order. Even recent neoliberal developments were hybridized by concurrent concerns in the process of implementation. The essay aims to discuss urban developments and policies as cases of practical hybrids, freely borrowing Latour's image that «(cities) have never been modern».
; Visiting an architecture exhibition can be a useful didactic experience to approach a disciplinary field which is not a subject in pre-academic courses. With very few exceptions in pre-academic years, the awareness of space and its symbolic, functional and aesthetic implications is entrusted solely to the environments in which someone lives. However, space and its trasformation have also environmental, social, economic, and political implications. The 14th Venice Biennial of Architecture has faced this complexity and tried to present it to non-specialist spectators. Some of the issues raised by the exhibition have become central to the analysis and interpretation of architecture exhibitions in general, and have been proposed to students. These issues mainly investigate human choices and responsibilities in the transformation of space, from a domestic context to a more urban and territorial dimension.
A microcosm of modernity. History, ethics and politics of (post)colonial cricket Cricket is the first sport to fully represent modernity, intertwining with 19th century society and culture. British sport par excellence has served as an instrument of discipline and ethics to "nationalize the masses" and "colonize the consciences". It consolidated the idea of Britishness, but it was also the nucleus around which anticolonial sentiments coagulated and post-colonial national identities were formed, from India to the Caribbean, from Australia to South Africa, up to diasporas and contemporary migrations. Paraphrasing Kipling, then, «what do they know of cricket who only cricket know?». The answer is in the secular history of the game: beyond the boundaries of the field, cricket is a cultural event, a tool for the construction of identity, a microcosm of modernity.
By capitalising on his interpretation of historical materialism in terms of "philosophy of praxis", Gramsci elaborates an original theory of modernity – modernity is neither "humanistic" nor "nihilistic", but is founded on the issue of the "state-nation". The concept of "national-popular" is the most appropriate expression of the "democratic" connection of "reason" and "life", i.e. of intellectuals and people. This connection takes place in a territory that constitutes the essence of modern state. Machiavelli, the Jacobins and Hegel are key-figures of the birth and development of the bourgeois hegemony. The "organic crisis" of this hegemony (that fully emerges with the First World War) is caused by the split between the nationalism of politics and the cosmopolitanism of economy. Neither "americanism" nor the USSR can offer an effective solution to this crisis. Keywords: Modernity; Philosophy of Praxis; History; Nation-State; Hegemony.
; This research faces the analysis of the myth of the foundation of the Spanish nation, the battle of Covadonga, and the cult of the Virgin of the Battle linked to it in the Modern and Contemporary Ages. First, dealing with the nationalist re-workings of the myth of the origins, the study is part of the constructivist analyses on cultural nationalism; second, through the study of the cult of Our Lady of Covadonga, the investigation contributes to the general knowledge of European Catholicism between the liberal age and the era of totalitarianisms. Finally, as a contribution of religious history, the research questions the paradigm of secularization, demonstrating the vitality of Catholicism in European modernity. The first part of the research is dedicated to the examination of the myth of the origins of the Spanish community in the historiography and literature produced between sixteenth century and twentieth century. In this section, the study highlights the re-significations and the public uses of the mythology of the ancestry in order to legitimize political systems even antithetical. In the second part, the study retraces the imposition of the sacred hegemony of the devotion of the Virgin of Covadonga in Asturias in the second half of the nineteenth century and investigates the symbolic construction of the cult, associated with anti-liberal and counter-revolutionary characteristics. The political uses of Mount Auseva Marian cult in the context of the mobilization of the Spanish Catholicism against the secularizing policies of the republican government is the topic of the last section of the examination. The research has tried to make of comparison and multidisciplinary approach its core points, comparing the case study with other experiences from Latin Europe and placing itself at the intersection of cultural history, religious anthropology, sociology of religion, history of art and literature, and local history.

; The essay deals with the philosophical-political thought on the negative, that has a great impact not only in the transition to modernity, but is also a leitmotif through all the modern era, while in the post-modernity the decisive turning point is the repudiation of the very category of 'negative'.This itinerary wants to shed light on conflictualist and differentialist political theories with all the questions that arise as a corollary of these great turning points of political philosophical thought.
Otto Hintze was an excellent example of the cultural turmoil that hit historical and political studies in the great crisis between nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with respect to the destiny of the European tradition and its projection in a political world dominated by new universalistic perspectives. Hintze moved thus between a historiography which was for long time attentive to the Prussian case – which he considered almost a paradigm of the modern State – and political science, in constant tension with Weber's contemporary foundation of a comprehensive sociology. The essay attempts to investigate the foundational question of legitimacy as the deepest and most innovative character of Hintze's work.
