Every year about half a million women die from complications of pregnancy, parturition and puerperium, most of which are preventable. The purpose of this thesis was to chart the distribution and decline in maternal mortality in Sweden between 1751 and 1980, and furthermore to characterize positive (predisposing) factors and negative (protective) factors of maternal mortality. Maternal mortality declined from 900 to 6.6 per 100,000 live births in these 230 years. Maternal deaths accounted for 10070 of all female deaths in the reproductive ages between 1781 and 1785, but only 0.2.0/0 between 1976 and 1980. However, in the 19th century 40-450/0 of the female deaths in the most active childbearing ages were maternal deaths. The children left motherless had an extremely high mortality. Indirect maternal deaths and puerperal sepsis accounted for the bulk of maternal deaths in the rural areas. Only a minority of maternal deaths occurred in lying-in hospitals. Midwifery services in rural areas and antiseptic techniques were most effective in preventing maternal deaths during the late 19th century. The changing distribution ofage and parity amongst the parturients had a definite impact on the mortality decline, enhanced by time, contributing to 500/0 of the mortality decline over the last 15 years. The expontential decline of cause-specific mortality and case fatality rates during the last 40 years is furthermore explained by the emergence ofmodern medicine - antibiotics, antenatal and obstetric care. The earlier serious problem of illegal abortions was eradicated by legislation and changes in hospital practice. The maternal mortality decline has levelled out during the 1970s, the relative importance of embolism as a cause of death is increasing. Advanced age and intercurrent disease are the most difficult risk factors to overcome. To conclude, this study indicates that the reason why maternal mortality has declined faster than otherhealth indices is that the major part of the maternal deaths can be prevented by medical technology, including family planning, antenatal and obstetric care. This experience should be of interest to developing countries where high rates of maternal mortality prevails.

The World Bank's publication, 'The Health of Adults in the Developing World', edited by Feachem, Kjellstrom, Murray, Over and Phillips, is both a response to concerns that adult mortality has been receiving insufficient attention and a challenge to governments, public-health workers and researchers. We present some different perspectives.

Mortality forecasts are essential for predicting the future extent of population ageing, and for determining the sustainability of pension schemes and social security systems. They are also useful in setting life insurance premiums, and in helping governments plan for the changing needs of their societies for health care and other services (European Commission 2009). Nowadays, the societal importance of accurate mortality forecasts is greater than ever before. As a strategy for dealing with rapid population ageing, recent pension reforms in a number of low-mortality countries have made an explicit link between the retirement age and/or retirement payments and past and future anticipated mortality and life expectancy values (Carone et al. 2016; OECD 2016). Because of the large and increasing societal relevance of accurate mortality forecasts, the field of mortality forecasting is growing and advancing.

The cause of mortality in sahelian goats was investigated in three local government areas of Borno State (Kukawa, Maiduguri and Mongonu) that are known for high goat production. A total of 150 selected flocks (50 flocks from each of the local government areas) were administered questionnaires through spot visits and interviews of the flock owners. Infant Mortality Rate is one of the indicators of development of anation. The rate of child death in a country reflects the health standardsof people. Most of the developing countries of East Africa and Asiahave the lowest HDI which reflect the high infant mortality rate.Similarly, India being a developing country has a higher IMR. However,IMR in India has declined from more than 50 per 1000 before 2005 toless than 50 in the recent years. However the IMR varies from state tostate particularly southern states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu andKarnataka which have lower IMR which indicate a better standard ofliving. Karnataka state has 35 per 1000 births which is better thanmany states in the country. However, there are regional disparities inIMR particularly in the districts like Gulbarga, Raichur, Koppal,Bagalkot and Bidar which have higher IMR than the southern districtsof Karnataka. This regional disparity is attributed to social, economicand religious issues. Despite the regional disparities, Karnataka hasthe lowest IMR next only to Kerala state illustrating comparatively betterhealth profile of the population. In the last five years there has been asharp decline in the Infant Mortality Rate.

Mortality is an essential measure of the health of populations. Examining mortality trends over time allows governments and development partners to better understand key priorities for intervention, whether health investments are having the desired impact, and how the health of the population is changing over time. This report examines mortality trends through measures of infant mortality rate (IMR) ‐ deaths in children aged <1 year per 1000 live births; under five mortality rate (U5MR) ‐ deaths in children aged less than 5 years per 1000 live births; and life expectancy (LE) ‐ average number of years a person could expect to live given the currentconditions for males and females. These are important development indicators, both for the health sector and in a broader development context.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, Caucasian countries experienced remarkable migration flows, political conflicts, and deterioration of civil registration systems. The reassessment of Armenian and Georgian population after censuses carried out in the early 2000s enables to re-estimate recent mortality levels in both countries. Vital statistics since the 1980s are presented and discussed. Infant mortality is corrected according to sample surveys, and mortality above age 60 estimated through model life tables. On the basis of these estimates, trends in life expectancy were similar in the two countries, unfavourable during the 1990s, especially for males for whom the health progress, notably in Georgia, is still low.

Substantial mortality increases occurred in Croatia, the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia, and Romania for both sexes and in most eastern European countries for men. In countries with decreasing mortality, reductions were more important for women of all ages and men younger than 65 years. In the 27 European Union member states, colorectal cancer mortality fell by 13.0% in men and 27.0% in women, compared with corresponding reductions of 39.8% and 38.8% in the United States. COnClusiOn Over the past 40 years, there has been considerable disparity in the level of colorectal cancer mortality between European countries, as well as between men and women and age categories. Countries with the largest reductions in colorectal cancer mortality are characterised by better accessibility to screening services, especially endoscopic screening, and specialised care.

A number of studies suggest that mortality rates among East German men increased in the wake of reunification, in particular between 1989 and 1991, in some age groups by up to thirty percent. This study first examines the developments of mortality and cause of death statistics based on detailed regional data. The results indicate that there was indeed an increase in mortality rates which cannot be dismissed as a statistical artefact. Next, the paper discusses various theories explaining mortality crises and their relevance for the case of East Germany. Based on individual-level panel data the relationship between exposure to stress and overall health is shown. Apparently, the increase in mortality can be explained by the increase in individual stress levels after the economic, cultural and political consequences of reunification.

Large and sudden economic and political changes, even if potentially positive, often entail enormous social and health costs. Such transitory costs are generally underestimated or neglected by incumbent governments. The mortality crisis experienced by the former communist countries of Europe—which caused ten million excess deaths from 1990 to 2000—is a good example of how the transition from a low to a high socio-economic level can generate huge social costs if it is not actively, effectively, and equitably managed from a public policy perspective.

Introduction: Infant mortality rate of Botswana has not reduced substantial in the last two decades (1990-2009); the HIV/AIDS epidemic has not helped the situation either. The aim of this project was to determine the major causes of infant death in Botswana and what the government is doing about it. Method: The statistical data used was from the Mortality and Morbidity report of 2006 from Department of Statistics at the Ministry of Health Botswana; literature review included several case report studies conducted by the CDC and ministry of health Botswana in early 2006 following a spike in reported infant death due to diarrhea. Several pamphlets and policy manuals in use in Botswana were also used to discuss the government efforts in reducing child death. Results: The study reveled that infant mortality is mainly caused by infectious diseases, taking account for over 67% of causes of infant death in Botswana. Pneumonia was responsible for 21.7%, while diarrhea was responsible for 27.7% of the deaths among infants. The study also showed that the government of Botswana has introduced several programs that should reduce infant mortality, and indeed success is evident in reducing mother to child transmission of HIV through the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV program. Conclusion: Clearly a lot more needs to be done to address the issue of infant mortality, since major causes in Botswana as well as other developing countries are preventable diseases. One of the ways is to educate the public about health and the health services available for them. Another important issue is to educate the primary health worker at all levels.

The relationship between population growth and economic outcomes is an issue of great policy significance. In the era of the Millennium Development Goals, poverty and its correlates have become the compelling issues. Economic growth may not automatically translate into reductions in poverty and its correlates (may not trickle down) if income distribution is at the same time worsening. We therefore investigate the direct effect of population growth on infant mortality for various income categories of countries. We find that after controlling for other relevant influences, population growth robustly increases infant mortality five years later across income categories. The coefficient for population growth and its significance rise as we move from full sample to lower-income to lowincome categories. The adverse effect of population growth on infant survival thus rises as one moves from full sample, to lower-income to low-income categories. For low-income countries, the adverse effect of population growth emerges sooner, i.e., after two years. The study highlights the important, if delayed, contribution of population control programs to reduction in infant mortality and poverty.

Newborn deaths are often used as measure of living standard of citizens as well as health indicator of nations. The rate is so high in developing countries, and more in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) region. This paper therefore investigated the main drivers of infant mortality in a sample of eight SSA nations. The empirical findings reveal that newborn deaths are negative and statistically significant with the quality and availability of water supplies, sanitation facility, improved standard of living; but positively related and statistically significant to the increase in pollution level these countries. The study therefore recommend that government's efforts should also be directed towards enhancing effective child healthcare services, provision of infrastructural facilities such as, improving access to drinkable water, and citizens' welfare.
