United States history over the last 30 years is viewed through the eyes of contemporaries by examining the distribution of problems on 100+ national surveys. The major shifts & patterns in public concerns are charted. Concerns are also analyzed by sociodemographic subgroups. Both the marginal distributions & the intergroup differences are found to vary notably across time. Most intergroup differences are small, but usually reflect the social roles & self-interests of the groups involved. The most important problem series is found to be a very useful indicator of social change during the postwar period. 7 Figures, Appendix. AA.

Recent British Election Studies have asked respondents to nominate 'the most important issue'. Responses to this question have been used to explain individual vote decisions and characterise the issue-component of those elections. This paper, however, finds limited evidence that individuals place more weight on those issues that they report as 'most important' when they vote. It also finds that aggregate responses to the MII question broadly match the estimated 'average' impact of those issues on voters. This suggests that even if voters have a limited understanding of what issues matter to themselves they have some understanding of what makes their fellow voters tick. [Copyright Elsevier Ltd.]

Which are the studies, special reports and commentaries that have been most influential in shaping the health promotion profession? This editorial poses that question to many of America's most accomplished researchers. Each was asked to name one or two 'must read' studies from other scholars as well as to feature one of their own research projects that has had the greatest reach. This review of seminal studies focuses on community health, patient education and behavior change research and a future editorial will focus on workplace based health promotion research. Readers are challenged to review the four decades of research represented by this list and consider whether trends can be identified with respect to the relative attention researchers are giving to individual, interpersonal, community and societal factors influencing health behavior. How clear is the evidence that the choices we make are determined by the choices we have?
