Die Multidimensionale Skalierung (MDS) ist eine Familie von Verfahren, die Objekte des Forschungsinteresses durch Punkte eines mehrdimensionalen (meist: 2-dimensionalen) Raums so darstellen, dass die Distanz zwischen je zwei Punkten in diesem Raum einem gegebenen Nähe-, Abstands-, Ähnlichkeits- oder Unähnlichkeitswert dieser Objekte optimal entspricht. Der Zweck der MDS liegt meist in der Visualisierung der wesentlichen Struktur der Daten. Diese soll dem Auge für eine explorative oder Theorie testende Analyse zugänglich gemacht werden. Als Daten lassen sich in der MDS außerordentlich viele Messgrößen verwenden wie etwa Korrelationen der Objekte über ihre Ausprägungen auf verschiedenen Variablen, direkt erhobene globale Ähnlichkeitsratings für Paare von Objekten, oder Co-Occurrence-Koeffizienten, die erfassen, wie oft ein Ereignis zusammen mit einem anderen auftritt. Das Buch ist eine anwenderorientierte Einführung in die MDS. Es beschreibt die für die Praxis wichtigsten MDS-Modelle (inkl. der konfirmatorischen MDS) konzeptionell, mit wenigen Formeln, und unter Verwendung typischer Beispiele. Es bietet zudem eine Beschreibung von zwei umfassenden Computerprogrammen für die MDS (Proxscal in Spss, Smacof in R). Ausführlich diskutiert werden zudem typische Anwenderfehler in der MDS.

"Ingwer Borg has contributed intensively and successfully to MDS, in theory and applications (e.g., Borg 1981a,b; Borg & Lingoes 1987; Roskam, Lingoes & Borg 1977). This paper offers some notes on the foundations of MDS, based on ranks of proximities. Two approaches are sketched, one working with contingencies of distance ranks, represented by boundaries in a dimensional space. The other approach uses the generalized betweenness relation, leading to configurations of object points. Details of the procedures and examples for both approaches are given for the one- and two-dimensional case. A procedure to find an optimal solution in a given dimensionality for data with random error is illustrated. The role of facet theory for theory testing by MDS is emphasized. Using the concepts of this paper will allow a fine-grained evaluation of a MDS solution for ordinal data." (author's abstract)

"The question of functional equivalence in internationally comparative surveys is discussed from the viewpoint of secondary analysis. A number of data-analytical procedures - ranging from a comparison of means over establishing correlations with third variables in individual countries to Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) - are discussed and used to check problems in functional equivalence in an item battery on gender roles. The data base consists of several national samples (Italian, German, American, British and Hungarian) of the 1988 International Social Survey Programme study on Family and Changing Gender Roles. It is concluded that (1) ex post checking of functional equivalence is useful and necessary because (2) the related problems might have less to do with translation than with ambiguities of the concepts and/or formulations used in source instruments and with differences in the social and economic realities in the respective countries, but that (3) even secondary-analytic strategies are as a rule not conclusive and should be supplemented with methodological experiments." "Multidimensional scaling (MDS) is often used for the analysis of correlation matrices of items generated by a facet-theory design. The emphasis of the analysis is on regional hypotheses on the location of the items in the MDS solution. An important regional hypothesis is the axial constraint, where the items from different levels of a facet are assumed to be located in different parallel slices. The simplest approach is to do an MDS and draw the parallel lines separating the slices as good as possible by hand. Alternatively, Borg & Shye (1995) proposed to automate the second step. Borg & Groenen (1997, 2005) proposed a simultaneous approach for ordered facets, when the number of MDS dimensions equals the number of facets. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm that estimates an MDS solution subject to axial constraints without the restriction that the number of facets equals the number of dimensions. The algorithm is based on constrained iterative majorization of De Leeuw & Heiser (1980) with special constraints. This algorithm is applied to Levy's (1983) data on political protests."
