Probleme und Entwicklungsaspekte der Einzelfallstudie werden diskutiert, um einen eigenständigen methodischen Vorschlag zu begründen. Als entscheidender Kritikpunkt wird die mangelnde Generalisierbarkeit der Ergebnisse betrachtet. Bei der Erforschung komplexer sozialer Gebilde ist es nach Ansicht der Autoren unmöglich, zugleich allgemeingültige, einfache und genaue Ergebnisse hervorbringen zu können. In der Regel geht bei Fallstudien die generelle Relevanz zugunsten der beiden anderen Merkmale verloren. Am Beispiel der Organisationsforschung wird die Problemlage nachgezeichnet. Der Ausweg aus dem Dilemma besteht in der Einbettung der Fallstudienmethodik, ergänzend mit anderen Untersuchungsmethoden, in ein komparativ angelegtes Programm der Organisationsforschung. Dazu werden die Vorzüge des "multi case-multimethod"-Ansatzes dargestellt. (HA)

"Stressing common features of motives and values, an attempt is made to outline a general and parsimonious taxonomy for classifying motives by borrowing from Schwartz' (1992) value theory. This is achieved by applying two basic dimensions found in value research to the structural analysis of motives. The tenability of this approach is tested by analyzing multitrait-multimethod matrices of different motivational indicators by means of multidimensional scaling. Results support the hypothesized distinction and structure of stable motivational domains." (author's abstract)

"Qualitative Comparative Analysis: Discovering Core Combinations of Conditions in Political Decision Making" published on by Oxford University Press.

Describes experiences gained as a researcher in the Carolina Longitudinal Study, a multimethod, annual assessment of aggression among two cohorts of 695 NC youth initially sampled in grades 4 & 7 & its relation to later problems in living. Theoretical & methodological shortcomings identified in earlier longitudinal studies are described, along with attempts to ameliorate these in the Carolina study; persistent types of "madness" that plague longitudinal research are identified. Stages & strategies in the research design, pilot testing, sample selection, & study initiation in 8 public elementary & middle schools in rural & suburban areas are recounted. Lessons learned about developmental research in general are summarized, along with some specific insights regarding & the dynamic & changing course of individual life trajectories as a function of larger social influences; implications for attempting to predict across generations are considered. 2 Appendixes, 22 References. Am Beginn steht eine Auseinandersetzung mit Problemen der Rekonstruktion der neueren Entwicklung der empirischen Bildungsforschung, wobei speziell auf deren Interdisziplinarität sowie Theorie- und Methodenvielfalt eingegangen wird. Im Weiteren wird dann ausführlich auf die Rolle verschiedener, an Bildungsforschung beteiligter Disziplinen eingegangen. Gegenüber früheren Positionierungen sind heute deutliche Verschiebungen festzustellen; es geht dabei um Zuständigkeitsansprüche, um die Definition von Erfolgskriterien sowie um Ressourcenkonkurrenz. Weder aus praktischen noch aus theoretischen Kontexten kann jedoch ein unstrittiger archimedischer Punkt gewonnen werden - wo ein solcher Punkt zu liegen hätte ist eben genau strittig. (DIPF/Orig.).;;;At the beginning problems of reconstructing the recent development of empirical educational research are discussed, especially problems resulting from its interdisciplinary character, its divergent institutional contexts and its multimethod approach. The next parts deal with the position of and relation between various disciplines involved in educational research in Germany. Compared to previous times currently important shifts concerning the relation between involved disciplines can be observed. It is a quarrel about responsibility, about the right do define success criteria and about resources. Neither from practical nor theoretical contexts, however, an indisputable Archimedean point can be obtained - where such a point would lie is precisely debatable. (DIPF/Orig.).
