Ito-Sadahiro numbers vs. Parry numbers
In: Acta polytechnica: journal of advanced engineering, Band 51, Heft 4
ISSN: 1805-2363
We consider a positional numeration system with a negative base, as introduced by Ito and Sadahiro. In particular, we focus on the algebraic properties of negative bases −β for which the corresponding dynamical system is sofic, which happens, according to Ito and Sadahiro, if and only if the (−β)-expansion of −β/(β + 1) is eventually periodic. We call such numbers β Ito-Sadahiro numbers, and we compare their properties with those of Parry numbers, which occur in the same context for the Rényi positive base numeration system.

Power in numbers
; This thesis examines the use of numbers and statistics as socio-cultural phenomena and as argumentative devices in texts. It utilizes the basic methods of a linguistic approach (CDA) to investigate in how far numbers influence our interpretation of a text and what the ideological motivations for the use of numbers could be. My hypothesis was that they are used as potent tools in the propagation of ideologies and agendas.Through various media channels we are constantly supplied with data on everything that can (and can't) be measured. However, numbers are not only used to seemingly illustrate what would otherwise seem unfathomable. They are also instruments of power, used to define and govern what they measure: us and our social environment. We see numbers as unbiased and therefore trustworthy, but usually overlook that numbers can be just as much products and constructions as all other statements, made dubious through political infringement and faulty measurement methods. The two practical chapters in this thesis deal with data on occupational stress and death tolls in the Iraq war. In both cases, numbers proved to be used for ideological purposes; to mitigate, inflate or obfuscate the size of the issue at hand. Numbers on the burnout syndrome serve not only to illustrate the facts about it, but also to underscore the message particular institutions want to disseminate it. They served as mere argumentative festoons, used for their symbolic power and persuasiveness. Death tolls of the Iraq war revealed a decline of available data from minute records on fallen American soldiers to the complete absence of numbers of killed Iraqi soldiers ? a circumstance I attribute to the proclamations of American authorities and media outlets in the months leading up to the war. The assumption that numbers are in fact used to propagate particular agendas can therefore be maintained.
