Lobbying is an integral part of the political reality of the European Union and a highly competitive and dynamic field of interest groups. This book takes a systematic look at lobbyists in order to broaden our understanding of the staff entrusted with the responsibility of influencing European politics. Who are the European lobbyists? What are their professional backgrounds, career patterns, practices, and beliefs? The study uses a sociological framework to explore the professionalisation and professionalism of the field across national proveniences, policy fields and interest groups, and develops a systematic analysis that considers three different dimensions: occupational patterns, shared knowledge and common convictions. Based on original research that combines in- depth interviews with survey data, European Lobbying demonstrates that European lobbying is a firmly established and highly professionalised métier. In an organisational field characterised by growth, pluralisation and increasing competition, the professional staff contributes to the homogenisation of European lobbying and the marginalisation of other, non- professionalised forms of interest representation. It will therefore appeal to scholars and students of sociology and politics with interest in European studies, European Union politics and the sociology of the professions.

Die Soziologie und die Politik haben vielfältige Berührungspunkte, weil beide, aus unterschiedlicher Perspektive, den gleichen Gegenstand in den Mittelpunkt ihres Interesses stellen. Es geht um die Gesellschaft und um die in ihr lebenden Menschen, um ihre Angelegenheiten, die 'res publica'. Der Soziologe untersucht diesen Komplex, der Politiker verwaltet oder gestaltet diese 'öffentlichen Angelegenheiten'. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschreibt einige Aspekte des Zusammenspiels zwischen diesen beiden Berufsfeldern. Der Soziologe in der Politik - der vorliegende Beitrag verdeutlicht dies am Beispiel der 'wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiter' im Deutschen Bundestag - schwankt ständig zwischen der Aufgabe der 'Politikberatung' und der reinen Zuarbeit für den Politiker. Generell kann gesagt werden, daß die Soziologie nicht der Königsweg zum Arbeitsplatz 'Politik' ist. Wie auch in anderen Arbeitsbereichen ist 'training on the job' ein wesentliches Merkmal in diesem Berufsfeld. (pmb)

In Switzerland, initial vocational education and training graduates may enter a track of the tertiary system called professional education. Professional education represents about one-third of the tertiary system, includes numerous vocational training courses, and prepares for managerial or expert positions. Despite its prevalence, the long-term returns to professional education have rarely been investigated due to lacking data. In order to fill this gap, we will estimate the long-term returns to professional education based on a novel methodological design. Secondly, we aim to explain the differences in the returns to professional education between occupational fields by making use of the task-based approach of Autor, Levy and Murnane (2003). Analyses are based on the Swiss Labour Force Survey from 1991-2016. Based on a quasi-panel with cohort fixed effects and on linear regression models, our results reveal average short-term returns to professional education of 7% and long-term returns of 11%. However, we find considerable differences in the returns between training fields, which can partly be attributed to differences in the change of task composition after completion of professional education between occupations.

AbstractDrawing on the findings of a broad inter‐university research programme conducted in Italy, in this article we explore how individuals' transnational networks combine with other dimensions of their social experience in the production of a self‐perception of their own 'global identity'. In particular, attention is focused on the structures and social spaces of everyday life in five crucial occupations (corporate managers, financial services workers, artists, media professionals and schoolteachers) where people's professional action is performed simultaneously along local and global axes. Within these groups the globalized self does not merely reflect individuals' engagement in transnational networks, but is also the outcome of a complex process including two added dimensions of social life in the job setting: (1) the degree and type of non‐filtered exposure to pressures stemming from the global environment, which both constrain and enable subjective practices of coping with change and ambiguity; and (2) the degree and type of competence in the rhetorics of globalization, namely the level of access to well‐known repertoires of interpretive resources for making sense of global trends. This analysis is consistent with social science conceptualizations arguing for a more nuanced understanding of globalization. In this light, not only is globalization a multidimensional process but it also produces a variety of responses and meanings by differently positioned actors.

Die Verfasserin macht auf der Basis eigener Berufserfahrungen auf offensichtliche Verbindungslinien zwischen soziologischen Forschungs- und Ausbildungsfeldern und betriebswirtschaftlichen Marketing- und Werbestrategien aufmerksam. Sie zeigt Verknüpfungen von Marketingzielen und soziologischem Wissen auf und beschreibt Berufs- und Anforderungsprofile von Assistant Product Managern. Ein besonderes Potential für soziologisch vorgebildete Marketingmitarbeiter sieht die Verfasserin in Großunternehmen; auf Möglichkeiten des Berufseinstiegs wird hingewiesen. Abschließend zeigt die Verfasserin, wie Soziologen in der Praxis den Marketingalltag mitgestalten können und welche Studieninhalte konkret verwendbar sind. (ICE)

Die Suche nach dem Berufsbild der Soziologie durchzieht die Diskussionen um das Fach seit der Einrichtung der Diplom-Studiengänge. Das Konzept der 'aktiven Professionalisierung' war darauf gerichtet, durch eine angemessene Ausbildung zum Diplom, durch Besetzung entsprechender Praxisfelder und durch verbandsbezogenes Handeln Berufbilder für Soziologen zu profilieren und die Soziologie als Beruf in der Praxis durchzusetzen. Der vorliegende Beitrag resümiert anhand der statistisch erreichbaren Daten den Prozeß der Professionalisierung nach folgenden Aspekten: Anzahl der Soziologie-Absolventen in Deutschland von 1977 bis 1991; Arbeitslosigkeit bei Soziologen; Die Heterogenität der Berufsfelder für Soziologen; Arbeits- und Gegenstandsbereiche von Soziologen; Anstellungsträger und Statuspositionen. "Die Kulturberufe gehören zu den seit Jahren expandierenden Wissensberufen und nehmen im bundesdeutschen Erwerbssystem in verschiedener Hinsicht eine Sonderstellung ein. So werden sie häufig in der Form des 'Alleindienstleisters' ausgeübt und weisen hohe Frauenanteile und Akademisierungsgrade auf. Von daher sind sie für die Frage nach 'zukunftsfähigen' Formen von Erwerbsarbeit für beide Geschlechter besonders interessant. Das Papier stellt zunächst in erwerbssoziologischer Perspektive Charakteristika der Kulturberufe in Abgrenzung zu den beiden dominanten Erwerbstypen - den 'klassischen' Professionen und dem 'verberuflichten Arbeitnehmer' - wie auch zu den traditionell feminisierten sog. Semi-Professionen dar. Gefragt wird weiter nach theoretischen Erklärungsansätzen für diesen vergleichsweise jungen Erwerbstypus. Dabei erscheint weniger die Professionstheorie als vielmehr das arbeitssoziologische Konzept des 'Arbeitskraftunternehmers' weiterführend, insofern es in subjektorientierter Perspektive Grenzverschiebungen zwischen Arbeit und Leben Rechnung trägt. In einem weiteren Schritt werden erste empirische Ergebnisse zur sozialstrukturellen Verfassung der Kulturberufe präsentiert, die ambivalente Deutungen nahe legen. So scheint einerseits Erwerbsarbeit in den Kulturberufen weniger durch Geschlechterstereotype geprägt zu sein als in den erwähnten anderen Erwerbstypen. Andererseits jedoch deuten die zu vermutenden Arrangements von Arbeit und Leben nicht unbedingt auf egalitäre Muster hin. Abschließend wird weiterer Forschungsbedarf thematisiert." (Autorenreferat)

Education is a strategic factor in the economic, social and political development of the country. Therefore requires institutions that provide a service to the needs of society, they will form new generations, so it must develop the skills needed so that they can assume efficiently and responsibly the commitments demanded by the society of the 21st ce ntury. In this context, the theme of higher technical education is appearing today in various discussions of the Latin American social world, various social actors after years without mentioning a word about this area, have come out claiming it as an optio n real so that young people and adults can access to better living conditions. This text is a theoretical approach which is conceived as the vocational technical education to perform certain occupations and skilled trades that do not require high - level scientific or theoretical bases and focuses on the capacity - building practical and operational events seeking its transformation and improvement through learning by practice, the tradition and the trial and error to generate new knowledge. Educational technology is part of higher education, which aims to train highly qualified human resources to develop technology and innovate. ; La educación es un factor estratégico en el desarrollo económico, social y político del país. Por lo tanto se requieren instituciones que presten un servicio acorde a las necesidades de la sociedad, en ellas se formarán a nuevas generaciones, por lo que deberán desarrollar las competencias necesarias para que puedan asumir de forma eficiente y responsable los compromisos que demanda la sociedad del siglo XXI. En este contexto, la temática de la educación técnica superior está apareciendo hoy en día en diversos debates del mundo social latinoamericano, diversos actores sociales luego de años sin mencionar palabra sobre esta área, se han pronunciado afirmándola como una opción real para que jóvenes y adultos puedan acceder a mejores condiciones de vida. Este texto es un abordaje teórico en el que se concibe la educación técnica como la formación práctica para desempeñar determinadas ocupaciones y oficios calificados que no requieren bases científicas o teóricas de alto nivel y se concentra en la formación de la capacidad práctica y operativa de los fenómenos buscando su transformación y mejoramiento a través del aprendizaje adquirido por la práctica, la tradición y el ensayo y error para generar nuevos conocimientos. La educación tecnológica es parte de la educación superior, que tiene como propósito formar recursos humanos altamente calificados para desarrollar tecnología e innovar.

AbstractThe present article investigates gender discrimination in recruitment for two male-dominated occupations (mechanics and IT professionals). We empirically test two different explanatory approaches to gender discrimination in hiring; namely, statistical discrimination and taste-based discrimination. Previous studies suggest that, besides job applicants' characteristics, organisational features play a role in hiring decisions. Our article contributes to the literature on gender discrimination in the labour market by investigating its opportunity structures located at the recruiter, job and company level, and how gender discrimination varies across occupations and countries.The analysed data come from a factorial survey experiment conducted in four countries (Bulgaria, Greece, Norway and Switzerland). Real job advertisements were sampled, and the recruiters in charge of hiring for these positions (n = 1,920) rated up to ten hypothetical CVs (vignettes). We find gender discrimination in Bulgaria and Greece and to a lesser degree in Switzerland, but not in Norway. The degree of gender discrimination appears to be greater in mechanics than in IT. Multivariate analyses that test a number of opportunity structures for discrimination suggest that mechanisms of statistical discrimination rather than those of taste-based discrimination might be at work.
