¿A dónde?. ¡Ciudad! (2005) y ¡Oh! ; Abstract: In the context of discussions about the relationship between opera and innovation, we propose the description and analysis of the experience of 'óperas urbanas' (urban operas), created by the playwright and director Eduardo Sánchez Medina, in Medellin, Colombia. Summary from its birth at the end of the 16th century, many theories about opera have been written from a historical, poetic, musical, aesthetic, political perspective, among others. However, there has been no systematic attempt to organise these theories and raise the key question: what is opera? It will be shown that the term "opera" reflects a philosophical idea, which goes beyond any positive discipline. In fact, there is no idea of opera, but several, some of which contradict each other. In this article I present a typology of ideas based on three logical criteria, which I have obtained after analysing the materials themselves: the subject/object distinction, the synchronous/diachronic distinction and the singular/plural distinction. This already teaches a lot about how we understand opera, but it also forces us to ask ourselves whether these ideas are suitable for understanding gender.

Cántico Fúnebre is a musical piece for tenor and orchestra written by nineteenth century Venezuelan composer Jose Maria Velasquez with lyrics by the politician and writer Francisco Conde. Cántico was written for the funeral of Juan Jose Conde, an independence leader and one of the founders of the local Masonry. The particular features of this piece are its remarkable influence of opera and the Masonic symbolism in the poem. This article provides, in first place, a vision of opera in Latin America and its use as a tool to emulate European culture. Then the process is studied by which the opera was penetrating the Masonic ritual until fully manifest in the funeral ceremony and finally, how the ruling elites, composed mostly of members of the order and the middle classes, adopted the opera as one of their main cultural values.

With the intention of emulating Italian operas, García Malo decided in 1791 to write one of these pieces in Spanish, in order to show that the richness and harmony of this language was comparable to that of any other foreign language, and in the hope that opera similar to Italian opera would be created in the future. Together with this patriotic intention was the aim of acclaiming Spanish splendour in America, and, through that, informing the audience of the work about the virtues of the Hispanic character, at a time in which some were worried about the future political stability of the overseas colonies. García Malo adapted the text entirely to neoclassical aesthetics, so that the message would more efficiently leave a mark on the spectator. As regards the music, composed by José Lidón, it most likely contributed to reinforcing in the listener the effect of reliving and singing the past glory of Spain.

; This article proposes a comparative study of two competitions whose story and outcome reveal their premonitory character in the evolution of architecture in the second half of the twentieth century. What places take on contemporary social transformations? ; The first national composers that were cultivated under the Romantic aesthetics took part of a programme, stimulated by the Government that awarded scholarships to outstanding musicians, by means of which they could go and study in the best academies in Europe. Among them, Felipe Boero won a scholarship to take a course of studies in the Conservatoire de Paris. His distinctly nationalistic opera, El Matrero, composed in 1925 and first presented on July, 12th, 1929, under the conduction of Hector Panizza, constitutes a milestone in the history of the academic music in Argentina. Felipe Boero was a pioneer in the using of librettos in Spanish, starting an important literary development of this genre in Spanish. Based on the homonymous gaucho-style work by the Uruguayan writer Yamandú Rodríguez, El Matrero transmits, humbly and sincerely, the essence of the Argentinian academic music by means of the complex post-romantic operistic language, attaching great value to the rural cultural heritage. Thus, the rich gaucho poetry, the inspired, simple beauty of the telluric and of the universal melodies, and the splendid stylizations of native dances like the media caña, make of this opera one of the best exponents of the Argentinian musical heritage.

; After approximately twenty years of absence from Buenos Aires' stages -since its first seasons during the Rivadavian period- Italian opera was brought again on stage towards the end of the government of General Rosas. While there are few researches in the field of Argentine musicology specifically on this topic, it can be observed that there is a vast amount of material that deserves to be analyzed. Within the frame of UBACyT project "La música en la prensa periódica argentina" [Music in the Argentinean press] directed by Silvina Mansilla, I have focused my investigation in the reception of Italian opera during the period already mentioned, through the analysis of the reviews and the readers' letters, which were published mainly in two papers of the time: Diario de la Tarde and Diario de Avisos. The analysis of the libretti/programmes of the operas premiered during those four years, also contributed to the study of their reception. The aim of this study is to show, in the first place, how the musical taste of the audience of Buenos Aires was influenced by the aesthetic judgments of the press and, secondly, to point out how opera reviews were biased by political issues during the period under study.

; The existing bibliography on one of the most celebrated buildings – afterwards – by international critics, the Sydney Opera House, is extensive and varied.
