Beginning with the analysis of documents held in the Provincial Historical Archive of Bologna, this article reconstructs the history of «ospizio di maternità», annexed in 1860 to the centuries-old city brefotrofio, with the aim of addressing no longer only illegitimate children but also the women who carried them on their lap. They became centers of propulsion of policies and initiatives that intended to overcome the old and by now obsolete logic that placed these mothers in the category of "deviance", and to recognize them as subjects towards which to provide forms of protection at a social and hygienic-sanitary level. Published on the occasion of the Conference organized [by] Dar Ġużeppa Debono in collaboration with The Noble Military and Hospitalier Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, and Anawim Community on the theme of "Voluntary Work and Social Services for the benefit of single parents" ; In traditional human society, a long-term stable cohabitation of two persons of the opposite gender was considered essential for providing the necessary care to any offspring that arise from the reproductive activities of that couple. This was biologically and socially important primarily because of the relatively long formative period required for the human child to reach full maturity and self-sufficiency. This cohabitation was formalized with the institution of marriage, also called matrimony or wedlock, which can be defined as the legally or formally recognized union of a man and a woman as life-long partners in a relationship. This union established rights and obligations between the couple, between the couple and their offspring and their in-laws, as well as society in general. One consequence of the sexual act is the generation of offspring. When conceived outside the marital environment, these innocent players were often considered an inconvenience and abandoned to the care of the state or religious authorities. Formal provisions to care for unwanted babies and foundlings were introduced in Malta during the late Medieval period, when the Universita` established a system at Ospizio Santo Spirito for the receipt and catering for the well-being and upbringing of these child. In 1518, two mammane or wet-nurses were being paid by the Ospizio to care for the foundlings at Santo Spirito. By 1554, 13 mammane were caring for 15 foundlings.20 By 1615, a system of anonymous deposition of foundlings was erected at the hospital, this consisting of a wooden cot that revolved on it vertical axis ringing a bell during the process. About eight foundlings were received annually.21 With the arrival of the Knights of Saint John in Malta, foundling care services were augmented at the Birgu Sacra Infermeria with two women being employed to bring up these children, these eventually being transferred to Valletta. These services continued to be offered right up to the end of the 18th century. ; N/A

Dottorato di ricerca in Memoria e materia delle opere d'arte attraverso i processi di produzione, storicizzazione, conservazione e musealizzazione ; Luigi Calamatta (Civitavecchia, 21 giugno 1801 - Milano, 8 marzo 1869) fu un incisore di traduzione appartenne, cioè, a quel genere di artisti che si dedicarono ad interpretare l'opera altrui. La sua attività si colloca a chiusura della secolare tradizione della stampa d'après mezzo attraverso il quale le opere dei grandi maestri antichi e contemporanei sono state divulgate in tutto il mondo. La stampa di traduzione ha avuto un ruolo di vasta portata nella diffusione dell'estetica, nei cambiamenti del gusto, nella fortuna visiva di alcune opere d'arte e in molti casi a questa valenza si è affiancata quella di essere considerata essa stessa un'opera d'arte. Tuttavia, nella più recente letteratura storico-artistica che riguarda il panorama italiano, se non mancano contributi che hanno preso in esame il concetto interpretativo di incisione di traduzione e diversi studi monografici sui più valenti incisori di traduzione dal XV al XVIII secolo, restano scarsi gli apporti sull'Ottocento, dove si ravvisa un certo ritardo nel recupero storico e critico delle personalità più rappresentative. L'interesse della critica si è infatti prevalentemente soffermato sulla più seducente incisione 'originale' dei peintres-graveurs della seconda metà del XIX secolo, considerata opera d'arte vera e propria per la presenza della componente creativa che, in alcuni casi, coinvolge l'artista in prima persona durante tutto il processo di esecuzione, dall'ideazione del disegno alla stampa della matrice. Di converso, l'attenzione per l'opera dei maestri traduttori è andata via via affievolendosi, poiché le stampe che hanno tramandato per secoli i capolavori dell'arte si presentano oggi di difficile lettura, venendo meno nel tempo quegli strumenti di conoscenza tecnici e storici che hanno permesso di farle apprezzare in passato e di cogliere il significato intrinseco della personalità artistica dell'incisore nella complessità del tessuto segnico. Partendo da questi presupposti, la presente ricerca vuole offrire un contributo per far emergere una delle personalità più rappresentative dall'"immenso magma fluttuante" (come lo definisce Evelina Borea nel suo ultimo lavoro, Lo specchio dell'arte italiana nelle stampe di cinque secoli, Pisa 2009) che caratterizza l'incisione di traduzione dell'Ottocento riguardante i fatti italiani e non solo, e tentare di colmare qualche lacuna di conoscenza della nostra tradizione incisoria che ancora oggi grava e alimenta pregiudizi sul ruolo e la rilevanza dell'incisore in un'epoca segnata da grandi sconvolgimenti politici e sociali, ma anche da enormi progressi tecnologici che si riverberarono sulla produzione figurativa a stampa fino a stravolgerla del tutto con l'avvento della fotografia. In questo contesto, l'approfondimento critico su Luigi Calamatta – poliedrica figura di uomo, artista e patriota risorgimentale di statura internazionale, vissuto tra l'Italia, la Francia e il Belgio, a contatto con i maggiori rappresentanti dell'élite progressista e repubblicana che segnarono la storia culturale e politica europea dell'epoca – offre spunti di ricerca e di riflessione che hanno permesso una rilettura per molti aspetti aggiornata basata su una considerevole quantità di documenti inediti, oltre a fornire la possibilità di aggiungere nuove considerazioni sul concetto di mutamento di percezione del ruolo specifico dell'incisore di traduzione e d'interpretazione che lo stesso Calamatta contribuì a modificare, grazie soprattutto all'influente amicizia con una delle protagoniste più attive della cultura romantica francese, George Sand, e alla lunga collaborazione con il maggiore rappresentante del panorama artistico dell'epoca, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. Il presente studio mira dunque ad affrontare e risolvere alcune problematiche inerenti i precedenti studi sull'incisore, in particolare la verifica delle fonti d'archivio, della bibliografia ottocentesca unita all'analisi diretta e al confronto sistematico degli esemplari delle opere, per ricostruire la genesi e la cronologia di queste ultime, la rete di relazioni artistiche e culturali di Calamatta e il dibattito intorno a temi specifici come la formazione accademica nel settore della calcografia nel primo Ottocento, il mutamento di prospettiva dell'incisore tra la traduzione e l'interpretazione dell'opera d'arte, il ruolo del ritratto nella propaganda politica. ; Luigi Calamatta (Civitavecchia, 21 June 1801 - Milano, 8 March 1869) was an 'incisore di traduzione', an 'engraver translator': he was in fact the kind of artist who devoted his life to interpret the work of others. His activity can be placed at the end of the centuries-old tradition of print d'après, a means through which the work of ancient and contemporary masters spread throughout the world. The present research aims to outline one of the most representative Italian figures among the incisori di traduzione in the context of early 19th century Europe. It also aims to fill some gaps in our knowledge of the tradition of engraving, being this issue still little studied. Even today there are too many prejudices about the role and relevance of the engraver in this period, marked by great political and social upheavals, but also by enormous technological advances that had a deep impact on prints production, until when it was disrupted with the advent of photography. Luigi Calamatta was a multifaceted figure: artist and internationally renowned patriot of the Risorgimento, he lived in Italy, France and Belgium and he was in contact with the leading representatives of the liberal and republican élite. The critic deepening of Calamatta's figure offers many opportunities of research and reflexion. An updated interpretation was also possible thanks to the thorough analysis of the huge quantity of newly discovered, unpublished documents. Moreover, it allowed to add fresh considerations to the issue concerning the changing of perception of the incisore di traduzione's specific role. A role that Calamatta himself contributed to modify, both because of his influent friendship with one of the main players of the romantic French culture, George Sand, and his long cooperation with the most important artist of that time, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres.

M.MALTESE STUD. ; Epidemic cholera reached Europe for the first time at the beginning of the nineteenth century. After devastating countries all over Europe, it reached Malta in June 1837 finding a poor and destitute population that was too fragile to withstand its onslaught. It attacked the old and weak inmates of the Ospizio and then spread to every corner of the archipelago. The Government, belatedly appointed Committees of Health to deal with the consequences of the epidemic and cholera hospitals were opened in the cities and villages, directives issued and health workers and priests mobilized. The malady wreaked havoc for 3 months attacking 8785 and killing 4252. Many Maltese doctors feared contagion and would not attend the cholera hospital but others and a few British army and navy doctors did not believe it was contagious and cared for the sick and the dying. Parish priests did their best for their parishioners and the monks (especially the Capuchins) contributed immensely to the spiritual needs of the dying. The population at large was in terror; brother shunned brother, mothers abandoned their sick children and sons and daughters would not go near their sick parents. People died in the streets locked out of their homes. Amid all this horror there were courageous and kind persons who took care of the sick and the dying. This thesis considers the relations and conflicts amongst people; the Government, the people, the doctors and the churchmen. Many people were very poor, deeply religious, illiterate, and uneducated, the few were better off but all had to face the destructing calamity of terror. Their reactions and behaviour vary from fear to fatalism, abandonment to attempts at self-preservation. ; N/A

L'analisi delle tappe attraverso cui, tra Rivoluzione e Unità, si sostanzia l'istruzione scolastica, consente di aprire ampie finestre sui progetti di trasformazione delle istituzioni educative e sulla valenza degli itinerari formativi attuati nella Sicilia del Sette-Ottocento. Contro la significativa preponderanza della scuola superiore e l'insegnamento gesuitico, portatore di una cultura umanistico - retorica, l'esigenza di razionalizzare l'insegnamento articolandolo in un sistema di ordini e gradi è proprio delle meditazioni della pedagogia illuministica. Il prototipo prussiano e austriaco, che tende alla creazione di un modello educativo organico, centralizzato e laico, determina in Italia la nascita di veri e propri epicentri di trasformazione politica e culturale. La cacciata dei Gesuiti segna il termine a quo del riformismo agrario meridionale nonché la fine del monopolio religioso sull'assistenza e sull'istruzione. In Sicilia De Cosmi si fa interprete di una riforma regalista, giurisdizionalista e popolare, invitando ad operare una riflessione propositiva sulla fine della cultura gesuitica e sui progetti di riutilizzo, in senso lato, del patrimonio dell'ordine. Tra riformismo e rivoluzione il dibattito relativo all'introduzione delle scuole decosmiane e al rapporto tra queste e le secondarie rivela significative consonanze con altri aspetti della politica borbonica nella sua fase tanucciana e caraccioliana. L'introduzione del metodo lancasteriano porrà l'accento sulla "necessità " di un'istruzione aperta ad una utenza più larga. Le istanze giurisdizionalistiche e i revisionismi successi incideranno in maniera trasversale sul sistema educativo e sull'opportunità o meno di affidarne il controllo al clero. I modi e i tempi di applicazione della normativa al caso Catania sottolineano lo stridente contrasto che caratterizzò l'ipotesi di una società, in bilico tra passato e presente, accarezzata da una monarchia borbonica che dopo le istanze riformistiche si scontrava con la realtà della Restaurazione. Se la ricostruzione della normativa può costituire una prima griglia inter-pretativa , l'esame - attraverso l'uso incrociato di fonti bibliografiche e documentazione d'archivio - delle strutture scolastiche diventa indispensabile chiave di lettura per penetrare nel meccanismo della risposta istituzionale alla volontà centrale. A fronte dell'intelaiatura di base relativa all'istruzione primaria e secondaria, pubblica e privata, così come si strutturava a Catania tra Sette e Ottocento, particolare significato riveste la peculiarità di alcune istituzioni finalizzate all'educazione di specifiche categorie sociali: il Collegio Cutelli dedicato all'istruzione dei nobili, e l'Ospizio di beneficenza, destinato ai diseredati, alla "bassa gente", alla prole dei mendichi, ai "figli di nessuno". Il duro sistema di vita dell'Ospizio, con il suo progetto pedagogico finalizzato all'istruzione "professionale - militare", ci dà la misura della abissale distanza dalla raffinata atmosfera, permeata di studi classici e di "arti liberali", del Collegio Cutelli. La scuola per la formazione dei futuri artigiani e la palestra atta a plasmare il giovane gentiluomo rappresentano le due facce di una medesima medaglia. Il modello proposto dal Collegio a confronto con quello suggerito dall'Ospizio costituiscono in sostanza un emblematico punto d'arrivo di quei mutamenti politico - istituzionali e socio - culturali che contemporaneamente caratterizzavano la formazione dello stato moderno nel Meridione. The analysis of the stages through which, between Revolution and Unity of Italy, the education system takes shape, open ample windows on the transformation plans for educational institutions and on the importance of the formative itineraries effected in eighteenth and nineteenth century Sicily. Against the sígnificant predominance of the high school and the teaching of the Jesuits, holders of a humanistic-rhetoric culture, the need to rationalise teaching, articulating it into a system of orders and degrees is the fruit of the meditatíons of Enlightenment pedagogy. The Prussian and Austrian prototype, that favours the creation of an organic, centralized and secular educational model, determines the birth of authentic centres of political and cultural transformation in Italy. The expulsion of the Jesuits marks the end a quo of agrarian reformism in the south and the end of the religious monopoly on the welfare institutes and education. In Sicily De Cosmi is the interpreter of a regalist, jurisdictional and popular reform, inviting constructive reflection on the end of the Jesuitical culture and on the plans to reutilize, in a broad sense, the patrimony of the Order. Between reformism and revolution the debate on the introduction of Decosmian schools, and the relationship between these and secondary schools reveal meaningful consonances with other aspects of Bourbon policy in its Tanuccian and Caracciolian phases. The introduction of the Lancasterian method will put the accent on the «necessity» of education available to larger numbers. The jurisdíctional demands and the revisionisms of the moment are to have a transversal effect on the educational system and on the opportunity or not of entrusting it to the control to the clergy. The method and the time necessary for the application of the regulations regarding the Catania case underline the sharp contrast that characterízed the hypothesis of a society, in unstable balance between past and present, caressed by a Bourbon monarchy that after the reformistic pressures, encountered the reality of the Restoration. If the reconstruction of the regulations could constitute a first interpretative scheme, the examination (through the cross use of bibliographical sources and filed records) of the scholastic structures becomes the essential reading key in order to penetrate the mechanism of the institutional answer to the central will. With reference to the basic framework regarding primary and secondary, public and private education, as it was structured in Catania between the eightéenth and nineteenth centuries, the distinctive characteristics of certain institutions whose purpose was the education of specific social categories: the Collegio Cutelli, dedicated to the education of the nobles, and the Ospizio di beneficenza, educating the disinherited, 'low people', 'beggars' children and waifs and strays, took on particular meaning. The hard way of life in the Ospizio, with its pedagogical plan aiming at 'professionalmilitary' instruction illustrates the extent of the abysmal distance from the refined atmosphere, impregnated with classica) studies and 'liberai arts', of the Collegio Cutelli. The school for the formation of future artisans and the school where young gentleman were shaped represent the two faces of the same medal. The model proposed by the Collegio and the one suggested by the Ospizio constitute, in essence, an emblematical point of arrivai of those political changes, institutional and social-cultural, that together characterized the formation of the modern state in the south.
