Eltern standen während der COVID-19-Pandemie vor vielfältigen Herausforderungen. Dieser Beitrag untersucht anhand des pairfam-Panels für 609 Mütter und 339 Väter Veränderungen im Erleben in der Elternrolle zwischen 2019 und Sommer 2020 und prüft mögliche Risikofaktoren für ein vermehrtes Belastungs- und Inkompetenzerleben. Bei Müttern und Vätern nahm Hilflosigkeit in der Elternrolle zwischen den Messzeitpunkten zu, während das Gefühl, den Bedürfnissen der Kinder gerecht werden zu können, abnahm. Vermehrte Hilflosigkeit erlebten Mütter, wenn mindestens ein Kita-Kind im Haushalt lebte. Mütter, die neben der Arbeit Kinder zu betreuen hatten, waren hinsichtlich der Erfüllung kindlicher Bedürfnisse im Nachteil.

Recent research examining beliefs about gender roles among the Chinese population has shown that parenting roles are becoming less gender-bound in contemporary Chinese society. In the context of socioeconomic and political changes, fathers are becoming more engaged in their children's lives. As depicted in Chinese media (e.g., popular television shows and movies), father-children relationships in everyday family activities are being modeled. Utilizing a sample of 34 third-grade students from a suburban Chinese classroom, the present study investigated parenting role beliefs from multiple perspectives—those of students (distinguishing between boys and girls), as well as their parents (distinguishing between fathers and mothers). Results showed that parenting role beliefs did not significantly differ between fathers and mothers, nor between young male and female students. Children's academic ranking was found to be significantly associated with their own parenting role beliefs and their parents' engagement in specific activities. Furthermore, parents' perceived influence of watching popular reality television shows was positively correlated with their parental role beliefs. Additionally, parental influence, as perceived by students, was positively correlated with students' own parental role beliefs, such that the more children felt their parents played an important role in their parental role beliefs, the more egalitarian their beliefs.

We empirically examined the congruence effect of work- and parenting-role identities on women scientists' perception of organizational support. With the assistance of the staff of the Center for Women in Science, Engineering, and Technology in South Korea, we obtained data from 215
women employed as scientists by responses to a survey. The results of polynomial regressions showed a positive congruence effect of their employment and parenting role identities on perceived organizational support (POS); the more closely aligned the two identities were, that is, the higher
the level of congruence of the role identities, the stronger was the POS. These findings highlight the pivotal role played by the balance between workand parenting-role identities in promoting a positive attitude in the workplace among women scientists. The theoretical and practical implications
and limitations are also discussed.

AbstractThe role of foster carers can be described as similar to the role of parents, but with some additional tasks. Through focus groups, children in care, young adults who are care‐experienced, foster carers, and social workers in England and Portugal shared their views on this role. Key themes included the need to promote children's sense of belonging and relationships with foster carers and their birth family, to support children's individual needs, and to recognise the influence of children's social care services, social workers and foster carers' family and social network. Foster carers and social workers in the English sample talked about the complementarity between the parenting side of the role and these additional tasks. On the other hand, children and young adults in both samples, and foster carers and social workers in the Portuguese sample, focused mostly on the parenting side of the role, but also stated the importance of some additional tasks, such as collaboration with children's birth families. These findings reflect policies and alternative care context differences between England and Portugal.

This study explores mothers' experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic with a focus on stressors, parenting roles, and work expectations. Qualitative analysis of open-ended interviews with a diverse group of 44 mothers in the United States generated two main themes: adjusting parenting roles and career concerns for mothers. Findings reveal that mothers have internalized strong intrafamily expectations to shoulder the primary responsibility for domestic labor and child care in addition to completing their work obligations and experienced institutional gender bias in the expectations that employers have for female employees. The interviews highlight lower expectations for fathers' contributions to parenting under pandemic conditions. Implications for research and policy are discussed with a particular focus on critiquing structures that may perpetuate gender disparities.

Parents who were abused as children are at increased risk for perpetuating maladaptive parenting practices, yet the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. This study prospectively examined maternal distress (a latent variable consisting of depressive symptoms and daily stress) and family violence as potential mediators in the intergenerational transmission of abusive (i.e., psychologically aggressive and physically assaultive) parenting. Participants included ( N = 768) mother-child dyads identified as being at-risk for family violence and maltreatment prior to children's age four. More maternal childhood abuse was associated with more distress and increased risk for family violence exposure in adulthood. However, only maternal distress mediated the association between mothers' history of abuse and their use of abusive parenting strategies. This study provides critical information about ecological mechanisms underlying the intergenerational transmission of abusive parenting and suggests the importance of targeting depression and stress management among mothers with abuse histories to curtail the cycle of violence.

The disclosure of incestuous abuse of a child constitutes such a departure from normative expectations of mothering that it necessitates a complete reappraisal and reconstruction of the mother's identity. This article draws on interview material with women in this situation in order to demonstrate how very traditional gendered parenting models were employed in repairing damaged identities. The ways in which such reliance on the protective and selfless aspects of mothering could contribute to the failure to recognise the abuse of their child are also discussed. In conclusion, motherhood as a source of power for women within the family is critically examined. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The limited research into Vietnamese immigrants suggests that this group may have different perceptions relating to parenting roles, child development, child health, illness, and disability, and differing patterns of health service utilisation. The author conducted a pilot study exploring how Vietnamese immigrants differ from Anglo-Australian in relation to these issues. The pilot, utilising a mixed quantitative and qualitative method, was conducted in Brisbane, Australia, with subjects being existing clients of a health centre. Two focus group discussions were conducted and a structured questionnaire developed from the discussions. Vietnamese immigrants in contrast to Australian-born Caucasians regard the general practitioner as the main health care provider and were less satisfied with English-speaking health services. This study highlights potentially important health-related issues for children of Vietnamese immigrants living in Brisbane, the importance of further research in this area, and the methodological challenges faced when conducting research into Vietnamese immigrants.

The development of a parenting role-play test is presented. The article briefly discusses the ad vantages of role-play tests over interviews, checklists, and direct observations. Item develop ment followed an empirically driven model suggested by Goldfried and D'Zurilla. The final par enting role-play test contained six common, yet difficult, parent-child situations. Judges used a scoring manual to rate parent's responses. The results indicated that the parenting role-play test could be scored with adequate reliability. Although the preliminary data gave indications of the role-play test's validity, further validation research is suggested. The application of the role-play test to social work practice is discussed.
