SummaryI have related a series of human experiences. which when linked with environmental factors, have led to a set of beliefs and commitments that are integral to our responsibilities as educators and dental care providers.The struggle to implement a very ambitious and challenging program in special patient care is essential if we are to fulfill our responsibilities as educators.

This keynote address provides a foundation that incorporates decision‐theory methods for integrating uncertainty into the decision‐making process for patient care in the health care system. The article provides linkages between the medical economics literature, health care analysis, and quantitative methods to help improve the outcomes for patients in the health care system.
