Even though it is usually inferred that team work is associated with positive findings (higher engagement in organizational matters, higher satisfaction with work, better performance results), this is not always true. In some occasions, team work results in poor performance outcomes because of social loafing or interpersonal conflicts. Therefore, it is important to know what psychological factors of the team determine its performance. We indicate that the main factors clearly associated with performance results are team trust, cohesion, stress, perceived self- and collective efficacy. Even though a lot of empirical studies have been made, there is still a lack of information about the interaction between these variables and the way they contribute to performance results. Besides, usually short-term artificially composed teams are under the scope of researchers. That's why the results do not fully reflect the essence of long-term teams functioning in real-life situations. In respect to the problems mentioned above, we raised the aim of this research: to investigate the interaction between performance results and team trust, cohesion, stress, perceived collective and self-efficacy in military settings. A hypothetical model in which team trust influences cohesion and the collective efficacy acts as a mediating variable between cohesion and performance results was created. The hypothetical model has also stated that self- and collective efficacy are associated with performance results not directly, but through the perceived stress.In this research, 160 military men of professional service took part. Of them 94.4% (151) were males and 3.8% (6) females. The age of the participants ranged from 19 to 37, mean 24.6 years. The participants belonged to 28 teams (military sections) and were selected based on the information about their team functioning. Only the teams in which their members were constantly working together were included in the research. Aggregated results were used in the statistical analysis. For the purpose of the research, three questionnaires were developed: the Military Stress Questionnaire (Cronbach α = 0.92), the Questionnaire of the Perceived Military Collective Efficacy (Cronbach α = 0.93), the Questionnaire of the Perceived Military Self-efficacy (Cronbach α = 0.94). Two scales used in this research were developed by other authors: the Intrateam Trust Scale (DeJong and Elfring, 2010; Cronbach α = 0.88) and The Perceived Cohesion Scale (Bollen and Hoyle, 1990; Cronbach α = 0.85). Team performance results were based on the evaluations of the field training.The results indicate that almost all variables of our research are intercorrelated at a statistically significant level. Performance results positively correlate with the perceived self- and collective efficacy, team trust and team cohesion. No statistically significant correlation was found between stress and performance results. Besides, a high correlation between cohesion and team trust was revealed, which indicates the multicollinearity problem between these two variables. Cohesion and team trust were united, and a hypothetical model was developed using the path analysis. It shows that cohesion and team trust influences performance results not directly: the perceived collective efficacy acts as a mediating variable. Besides, self-efficacy influences the perceived collective efficacy, and the collective efficacy influences the stress level. Several important conclusions from the obtained results could be made. First, a high collective efficacy can diminish military stress and thus act as a protective factor against the formation of PTSD and other psychopathologies. Apklausus 160 profesinės karo tarnybos karių, kurie priklausė 28 komandoms (skyriams), nustatyta, kad didesnis komandos sutelktumas, pasitikėjimas ja, suvoktas Aš ir kolektyvinis efektyvumas yra susiję su didesniu komandos veiklos efektyvumu. Atlikta kelių analizė parodė, jog komandos sutelktumas ir pasitikėjimas ja numato veiklos efektyvumą per tarpinį kintamąjį – suvoktą kolektyvinį efektyvumą. Suvoktas Aš efektyvumas su komandos veiklos efektyvumu taip pat susijęs ne tiesiogiai, o per suvoktą kolektyvinį efektyvumą.
Purpose This study aims to (1) test the effects of Generation Z (Gen Z) customers' perceived collective efficacy and self-efficacy toward food waste reduction on their food waste reduction intentions in restaurants, (2) examine the mediating role of customers' self-efficacy in conveying their perceived collective efficacy for food waste reduction intentions and (3) explore the moderating roles of Gen Z restaurant customers' interdependent self-construal and independent self-construal.
Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from an online survey distributed to Gen Z restaurant customers in China in April and May of 2022. The snowball sampling approach was used to collect the data, and the final sample included 214 participants. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was applied to examine the hypotheses.
Findings The study found that Gen Z restaurant customers' perceived collective efficacy and self-efficacy toward food waste reduction were positively related to their food waste reduction intentions. Self-efficacy also played a mediating role in the relationship between perceived collective efficacy and food waste reduction intentions. Moreover, Gen Z restaurant customers' interdependent self-construal negatively moderated the relationship between perceived collective efficacy and self-efficacy.
Originality/value This study contributes to the literature on social cognitive theory, self-construal theory and customers' ethical decision-making processes. It integrates Gen Z restaurant customers' perceived collective efficacy and self-efficacy toward food waste reduction into the ethical decision-making process and investigates how the two types of efficacy determine food waste reduction intentions.
Abstract Empowerment refers to the ways in which individuals and groups gain greater control over their lives. To date, the majority of studies focus on empowerment at the individual level. Further, research typically focuses on how to make people feel empowered and not how communities exercise their power. The present study utilizes collective efficacy, a community-level theory, to explore community characteristics that may empower individuals to engage in household activism, and communities to participate in neighborhood activism. The findings suggest that mutual efficacy and social cohesion are key drivers of participation in both household and neighborhood activism. Self-efficacy is associated with household activism only. Findings suggest that it is important to use individual-level skill-building opportunities as a method for fostering a collective identity and train community members to recruit others. In addition, community-building initiatives are more likely to result in activism if they focus on building mutual efficacy in the community.
Caprara et al. (2009) criticized existing measures of internal political efficacy for not taking into ac-count psychological theories of self-efficacy and for the resulting low construct validity. As an alter-native, they presented a ten-item measure called Perceived Political Self-Efficacy (P-PSE) Scale. Based on social cognitive theory, it adopts a psychological understanding of self-efficacy and cap-tures the phenomenon in a more systematic and complete manner than previous measures of inter-nal efficacy. We translated the P-PSE scale to German and tested it in a German national quota sample, using quotas for age, gender and education (N = 1025). We provided evidence on the scale's construct validity (by testing its correlations towards related constructs) and on its criterion validity (by regressing political participation propensity on the P-PSE score). The scale explained ΔR2 = 26% of people's propensity for political participation over and above sociodemographic varia-bles, and ΔR2 = 12% over and above previously existing measures, demonstrating its incremental value. We also tested cross-cultural measurement invariance towards an Italian sample, establishing configural, as well as partial metric and scalar invariance. In addition, we validated a four-item short version of the scale, which proved to be similarly valid as the full version. We argue, that these two measurement instruments provide a more adequate way of assessing internal political efficacy for research in German-speaking countries.
The main values perception of biology teacher candidates was examined, as well as the effects of those values on self-efficacy perception. Research was conducted on a heterogeneous group of 162 biology teacher candidates (44 males and 118 females) studying at the Faculty of Education, Selçuk University, Konya, Turkey. The Teacher Self-Efficiency Scale developed on the basis of Bandura's theory by Schwarzer, Schmitz, and Daytner (1999) was modified and applied in this research in order to measure the self-efficacy perception of teachers. Findings demonstrate that teachers' values significantly predict their professional self-efficacy levels.
Using a representative sample from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health and a recently developed stepfamily‐process typology, this study explores three plausible functions of perceived neighborhood collective efficacy with respect to stepfamily life and youth adjustment: an ability to (1) prevent maladaptive patterns of stepfamily processes, (2) promote stepchildren's adjustment beyond the influence of stepfamily processes, and (3) protect stepchildren's adjustment when faced with maladaptive patterns of stepfamily processes. The results indicate that higher levels of perceived neighborhood collective efficacy are associated with more adaptive stepfamily processes and higher levels of youth self‐esteem over time, net the influence of stepfamily processes.
Abstract This study investigated the moderating role of intrinsic motivation for military studies on the relationship between academic self-efficacy and change in perceived military competence. We present two concurrent hypotheses based on theoretical interaction effects of intrinsic motivation. Data from 245 cadets from three military academies revealed a positive relationship between self-efficacy and an increase in perceived military competence only for cadets with lower levels of intrinsic motivation. This suggests that, with lower intrinsic motivation, beliefs about one's capabilities to organize and take courses of action to attain certain goals may make a crucial difference in cadets' compliance to exert effort to increase their military competence. In contrast, self-efficacy seems less important for increased perception of military competence in cadets with higher intrinsic motivation. These cadets probably increase their military competence mainly as a result of the pleasure they gain when engaging in educational activities. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.
