The specific aim of the survey was twofold, first to find out what educational institutions are "available" in Cape Town for Africans (whether they are numerically adequate, are sufficiently well suited and equipped, and are strategically located in proximity to pupils' homes; and how the social circumstances or the pupils and of the staffs affect school training); second; to find out to what extent the existing schools are "utilized'' by the Africans. In addition, the survey also considers the broader question of school education for Africans, which has become at present one of the major problems of the whole country together with the social and political re-organization of the Bantu community. To re-organize socially is first of all to re-organize mentally, a task which is proper of education in general and of school education in particular.

The thesis is a study of present-day religion in a rural Bantu society, viewed within the framework of their social structure. The society is that of the Tlhaping of the Phuduhtswana chiefdom of the Taung reserve. After an introductory chapter on the historical and geographical background, a chapter is devoted to the social and economic changes that have taken place or are still taking place, such as the scattering of the population from a large central capital, the concomitant changes in political organisation, the weakening of kinship ties, and the participation in migrant labour. By far the most prominent type of religion in this society to-day is that represented by the Christian churches, and the major part of this study therefore deals with the churches, but in a separate chapter the remnants of pagan belief and ritual are also discussed.

The theme of this thesis is a political history of a state during a critical time in the history of a nation and the world. A political history implies an account of what has happened politically within the years and are dealt with. It involves an inquiry into political leaders, governmental institutions, and enactments, but it also involves public opinion formulation.

The intent of this article is to explore the relationship between the concept of the church, the concept of the layman, and the educational ministry of the church. When we view the church as a human institution with a sociological and political history, we must also recognize that it has an educational history.

Speech reflecting on the Thanksgiving holiday to audience in Lisner Auditorium ; EXCERPTS FROM REMARKS BY THE HONORABLE BROOKS HAYS, ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE, AT THE "FESTIVAL OF THANKSGIVING" LISNER AUDITORIUM, WASHINGTON, D.C., NOVEMBER 22, 1961 Thanksgiving Day belongs to all faiths. Its religious motivation was so deep and its basic lesson was of such wide application that in due course it came to belong to all and is cherished by all. It presents an opportunity to voice our common faith. Unlike the two other great religious days, Easter and Christmas, it belongs exclusively to our own history. "Let us give thanks" - this is the summons we hear and we heed it. Without attempting to provide an inventory of national blessings I would like to suggest five blessings to contemplate. First our spiritual origin. The colonists who instituted Thanksgiving had a religious purpose which flowered in our national institutions. Their belief in freedom and justice had Biblical roots and it has persisted. There was an emphasis on individualism but our religious pluralism is also an element of strength in national life. The moral foundation for our political system was laid by sturdy forbears. Their belief in God and in human dignity is reflected in the early documents which constitute the basis of our political system. The principle of majority rule for example was firmly advanced in the Mayflower Compact. Hence Donald Peattie could say "Our eager soul was born before the body politic." A second
