In the current age of migration, suburbs in many Canadian cities are becoming important ports of entry for new immigrants from around the world. This has led to a growth in cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity in the suburbs reflecting global migration patterns. In Vancouver, Canada, the growing "suburbanization" of immigrants is shaping social, cultural, economic, and political landscapes in these areas. Through interviews with 60 key informants, we explore the settlement of Mexican immigrants in Burnaby, Surrey, and Abbotsford, fast-growing Canadian communities, and popular destinations for Mexican immigrants. The findings reveal that Mexican immigrants living in the suburbs of Vancouver face numerous barriers, including lack of access to affordable housing to rent or buy, lack of information on settlement services, and difficulty securing acceptable employment.
Writing a chapter on settlement geography in American Geography: Inventory and Prospect in 1954, Clyde Kohn observed that `` No analytical framework has yet been developed for settlement geography comparable to location principles in industrial geography or nationalism in political geography. This is a goal that has not yet been achieved. '' In the years that have elapsed since this comment was made, there have been momentous developments in the geographic analyzes of settlement patterns, events that have not only led to a significant reorientation of the geographer's research on the subject, but have also suggested several new topics of methodological debate within the discipline. Most of these developments have been focused by the reflector beam of a high interest in theoretical and quantitative work. The topics of discussion that revolve around the question of whether or not geographers should concern themselves with mathematical statistical analysis, are mostly dead topics today; to the extent that we claim to be sociologists we must use the language of science and mathematics. But there are some interesting and related questions that are still pertinent, particularly regarding the geographic analysis of settlement patterns. To what degree, for example, has there been a net gain in our understanding of settlement patterns and processes as a direct consequence of the large amounts of data analysis and empirical work that has been done on this topic? More significantly, in what sense has statistical analysis been related to theoretical hypotheses and models? It is easy to show, for example, that several probability models, each with different generating functions, can serve as an adequate description of a certain group of data. We must be guided by theory in selecting the appropriate model and in effect giving direction and meaning to most of our statistical analyzes. To what degree, then, has there been the development of a body of theory on human settlement patterns? In other words, how much progress has been made towards the goal identified by Kohn in 1954, that of developing an analytical framework for the study of human settlement patterns? These are the issues towards which this study is directed; For the most part, the discussion is geared toward a review of the work being done, but alternative methods are occasionally suggested. In the final section some implications of this geographic analysis for planning are discussed.
The article is based on research on the lack of access to official water services in the informal settlements of the city of Antofagasta, Chile. The work aims to respond 1) what alternative practices to access water are used by the population of these settlements, and 2) to what extent these practices help them to claim access to formal water services. Combining concepts from urban political ecology and citizenship studies and based on qualitative information from intensive field work carried out in Antofagasta in 2018, the article discusses the emergence of alternative arrangements to access water by the settlements' population and its relationship with the search for recognition of their basic rights to essential services and urban citizenship.
The settlements of informal origin in Colombia emerged as an alternative to access housing for the socially and economically vulnerable population due to the limited institutional opportunities to obtain a solution. Thus, the victims of the armed conflict have found in this modality of urbanization a refuge in the city as a result of the forced displacement and the poverty. However, the different access modalities to the land relate this type of settlements with an illegal city due to the processes of irregular urbanization and self-production of housing developed far from the fulfillment of the urban norm. This denomination leads to an invisibilization of a set of injustices that the families who live there face off permanently. Given this scenario, the concept of space justice, which was proposed in the seventies, was adopted with the intellectual movement called Radical Geography, so it could be explored new approaches to settlements of informal origin that allowed to overcome the confused idea of understanding the legal as an action of justice. The exploration is carried out from the revision of the set of political actions derived from those aws designed to guarantee the access to housing to the victims of the forced displacement because of the internal armed conflict in Colombia, and the reality observed through life stories. Finally, it is observed that the design of public policies continues to be thought from a utilitarian perspective, and for this reason the actions of justice are still measured in economic terms and not in social terms.
The research provides the results of the socio-economic, political and environmental impact of human settlements on the periphery of the city of Cúcuta. The research had a mixed approach, because the descriptive method and the field study were used, allowing to obtain primary information of the subjects through structured surveys applied in the respective locality and consultation with secondary sources. The population corresponds to the families that are located in the periphery of the city of Cúcuta, non-probabilistic sampling was used under the random sampling technique, allowing to select 200 families that meet the characteristics and conditions of the study. It was evidenced a community with vulnerable characteristics generalized by shortcomings of housing structuring and high settlement rate, resulting in abandonment or poor attention by the State, the total absence of public services as basic sanitation, due to the precarious conditions in which the vast majority of the individuals who live there inhabit. All of the family nuclei are made up of single mothers, heads of households with one or three children, who work as independent workers, their level of education is basic and allows them to work in various jobs. The health service is poor, there is no comprehensive social security. Finally, it was found that family members do not have adequate housing conditions, since the vast majority of these have only one room where they perform various activities.
Informal settlements are commonly regarded as a problem; such a condition stems from their association with poverty, irregularity and marginalization. Despite years of research proving the opposite, policies and academic discourses still highlight the division between "formal" and "informal" cities, which often excludes informal settlements from "normal" urban considerations. This paper argues that discursive construction increases the marginalized condition of informal settlements, thus affecting their residents. Through the use of a "place-making" approach, we explore the construction of a place according to discursive, spatial, social, cultural and political elements in order to destabilize some of the assumptions underlying the discourses on marginalization. This research was carried out using a qualitative methodology in two lowincome settlements located in Xalapa, Mexico. Results show that local discourses reveal complex and ambivalent opinions about working-class settlements, thereby reproducing and affecting the binary categorization of "informality". However, it is the focus on the residents own place-making activities that determines the possibility of rethinking informal settlements.
Argues that the rise of the new Intifada and increasing violence is the result of the frustration among the Palestinian population over lack of progress in the Palestinian-Israeli peace process and the persistence of Israeli occupation; concludes that a political settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is feasible only if Israeli security and Palestinians' national rights are respected. This paper will discuss the emergence of informal settlements which were encouraged by the housing crisis caused by macroeconomic and urban policies at the end of the last military dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983) On one hand, the aim of this paper is to reconstruct the modes of occupation used by the popular sectors to develop these neighborhoods, as well as the social, political and religious organizations that fueled them. On the other hand, we are interested in analyzing the inhabitants' views concerning another way of "auto urbanizing" the metropolis which has been maintained till the present.
The city of Montevideo changed drastically during the last decade of the twentieth century. The number of informal neighborhoods increased in an unprecedented manner. Many of these neighborhoods started as organized land invasions, that is, with a group identifying a piece of land, invading it, outlining streets and plots, negotiating with authorities and organizing to demand public services. This article asks what explains the wave of organized land invasions in Montevideo around 1990. Using qualitative and quantitative analysis of squatting events over time, it argues that the rising electoral competition and the arrival of the leftist coalition Frente Amplio to the city government, constituted a key political opportunity for the urban poor.
From the intersection between International Law and International Political Economy, this article aims to reread Susan Strange's contributions and apply them to the investor-state dispute settlement regime, a topic that was not studied by the author. Therefore, the article examines how the retreat of the State impacts investor-State dispute settlement regime; and how the structural power of transnational corporations is expressed in specific cases of disputes. The article closes by linking the previous ideas to the covid-19 pandemic crisis and the "return of the State".
Summary The practices of making home such as cooking, constructing and informally connecting to services are an essential part of women's daily lives in informal settlements in Viña del Mar, Chile. Women's practices and speeches around 'home', however, are a poorly researched topic that can provide valuable information to analyse gender relationships in socio-spatial production of the informal habitat. Through an ethnographic approach, using visual and participatory methods, the article presents empirical data produced in the two largest informal settlements in Chile. The results show that practices are not only survival strategies, but are intrinsically political. The article provides a three-dimensional analytical framework that classifies homelessness practices into home building, maintenance and planning practices. With a commitment to gender and urban justice, the article's analytical and methodological approach contributes to the recognition of women's efforts in the fight for housing in Chile.
This article analyzes the role of the OAS in creating political frameworks for the peaceful settlement of the disputes, and its role in enhancing the adjudicative frameworks for settling disputes arising between American states. The article suggests that while the OAS had succeeded in creating strong political frameworks for the peaceful resolution of regional conflicts, it was not equally successful in enhancing the normative framework needed for the legal settlement of conflicts between American States.
In Los Platanitos, an informal settlement in North Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, a lack of municipal solid waste collection services led residents to implement a pilot vermiculture project with a focus on gender. The main goal of the project was to reduce the amount of organic waste found in waterways that run throughout the community, and thereby reduce environmental pollution, improve public health and secure a source of income for women, the leaders of the project. The project is innovative in integrating culturally appropriate local technologies, building on gender and intergenerational strategies, and taking into account principles of economic sustainability. The project has established managerial and operational structures that strengthen organizational capacity and self-management with women in particular, but also in the community at large, demonstrating the positive impact that such projects can have on increasing social capital and community leadership for decisions that affect the daily lives of residents, in a time when institutional planning responds to a neoliberal political context.
Saharan oases are all suffering a severe abandonment due to economic, social and political reasons. Abandonment is also the main cause for decay, thus in turn affecting at the same time the primary economical resources, the palm grove and the built environment. The latter one is also fighting a common sense of rejection, resulting from the belief that traditional housing is uncomfortable, dirty, not lasting and unhealthy. A restoration project run by the University of Cagliari in Figuig (Morocco), opened to reflect on a new attitude in the intervention of conservation, showing that actions pointed to re-use of buildings, building traditions and traditional materials can bring to a win-win result where the memory joined to the habitat, the local identity and the local micro-economy are given a renewed and substantial significance.
