This book on Metafore dello spazio, which follows the first dealing with La politica e gli spazi politici, is part of a series designed to illustrate the results of an interdisciplinary study group, fostered by Lea Campos Boralevi, Vittore Collina and Bruna Consarelli, lecturers in the history of political theory, entitled Figure dello spazio, politica e società, and aimed at exploring the major political and social issues of the modern and contemporary age from the aspect of spaces and their production.
This notebook is the fourth in the series designed to illustrate the results of an interdisciplinary study group, fostered by Lea Campos Boralevi, Vittore Collina and Bruna Consarelli, lecturers in the history of political theory, entitled Figure dello spazio, politica e società, and aimed at exploring the major political and social issues of the modern and contemporary age from the aspect of spaces and their production. This article traces the formation of a new discipline -- international political economy (IPE) -- in terms both of concepts & theoretical debates, & of the social process of its institutionalization, as shown by journals, textbooks, course offerings, & Internet Websites. In its first part, this article presents some well-known definitions of IPE & illustrates different types of theory. Special attention is given to Robert Gilpin, because of the importance of his work & the evolution of his thinking about IPE. In the second, the 30-year life of IPE is analyzed to identify the most important events leading to the creation of a new field of social research: the organization of conferences in the early 1970s; the publication of important books written by unorthodox economists like Kindleberger & Hirschman; & theoretical debates. The work of R. W. Cox, which is related to the "Gramscian turn" in international relations, is a particular focus of attention. Finally, the consequences of the "Fourth Debate" on positivism in international relations are considered in terms of the connection of IPE with constructivism, historical sociology, & the "cultural turn" in the social sciences. The third part shows how the debate on IPE has moved from being fully internal to (American) political science, to include general concerns about the social sciences at the beginning of the 21st century. Downs is unusual in having been active in economic & political research during the 1950s & 1960s, & then turning to real estate & urban planning for the rest of his career. Focus here is on his first book, An Economic Theory of Democracy (1957), which presents not one, but many theories of democracy even if they are all generally couched in economic terms. This paper expounds the argument of the Economic Theory systematically & sequentially covering (a) the general non-spatial model of party competition; (b) the effects of information shortage; (c) party reliability & responsibility; (d) the two-party spatial model; (e) the multiparty spatial model; (f) further consequences of information shortage; & (g) problems of voting turnout. Evidence from quantified election programs is used to show that the models leading to limited party policy movement & non-convergence are the more realistic ones. Despite its defects, the book laid down the agenda for mathematical political theory & empirical research over the last 50 years & has a fair claim to being the most influential single book written on politics in that period. 1 Table, 6 Figures, 1 Appendix, 38 References. Easton's effort in theory construction was motivated mainly by his critical assessment of historicism & empiricism -- approaches that dominated political science in the 1950s. This criticism, which, at that time, he shared with other political scientists, finally resulted in what came to be known as "behavioralism." Behavioralism stressed theory-led empiricism as well as empirically grounded theory formation. Easton himself developed a general theory of politics that was always related to & helpful for empirical research. This general theory was also a framework for integrating partial theories of politics. The basic concept of Easton's systems analysis of politics is the political system, a system of interaction through which authoritative allocations are made & implemented for the society. The point of reference of Easton's theory is the idea of the persistence of the political system. It is assumed that political systems want to persist. In the context of his systems theory of political life, Easton developed concepts that have become part & parcel of contemporary political science, including concepts such as specific & diffuse support as well as demands that designate fundamental "input" categories of the political process & categories such as political community, political regime & political authorities that characterize the basic objects of a political system. There is no doubt about his monumental impact on the theoretical & empirical development of contemporary political science. 32 References. Adapted from the source document.

The book reconstructs the utopian tensions present in positivism, generally projected towards imaginary descriptions of the future, taking its cue from Comte's doctrine of political positivism in which he describes an ideal society based on collaboration between different classes. The temptation to describe the future in terms of achievement of perfection is a trait shared by many other writers that were close to positivism. Nevertheless, the book demonstrates how at times these operations of alternative history can nourish an image that is not confident, but on the contrary concerned about the repercussions on human qualities of a world overly grounded in technology and the tangible values of economic development.
Questo volume raccoglie gli interventi presentati al Convegno "Scritture femminili e Storia (sec. The essay is an overview of libertarian literature. It begins dealing with lexical issues concerning the meaning of liberalism, classical liberalism, conservatism and libertarianism. There are two meanings of libertarianism: a large one, as a free market oriented liberalism, and a strict one, as an extreme classical liberalism which calls in question the State as the main enemy of liberty. Novelist Ayn Rand is one of the main sources for contemporary libertarian theory, although she never called herself libertarian. Murray N. Rothbard is the most important libertarian thinker; he was an "austrian" economist and a natural law theorist who considered free market as the social institution capable to satisfy every human need, security and justice included. In response to rothbardian society without a State, Robert Nozick exposed a minarchist position, in favour of a minimal State limited to the function of protecting individual rights. This distinction between anarchism and minarchism is a crucial one for libertarian theory. The most interesting current literature is that in rothbardian, natural law and natural rights style. There is also an italian libertarian literature, including works of political theory, philosophy of law, environmentalism and history.
