The main goal of the Political Regimes project is to assemble & analyze a large cross-national dataset containing indicators of three basic political regime types (democracy, totalitarianism, & authoritarianism) & a variety of political regime subtypes (eg, parliamentary democracy, bureaucratic authoritarianism). This dataset will contain yearly measures of political regime type & subtype for 117 major countries from 1946 (or a country's first full year of independence) through 1988, & will serve as the basis for a comprehensive study of the determinants & performance of political regimes. The comprehensive scope of the database, its time-series properties, & the elaborate typology of regimes that it is based on will enable researchers to examine political regimes in novel ways. 2 Tables, 3 Exhibits, 63 References. The research field of regime theory has seen a proliferation of different approaches and typologies to explain the ever-changing reality. This paper has created a typology of these regime typologies and their respective datasets in order to describe and analyze their various merits for research. Finally this paper maps various typologies according to their most common research areas. The aim is to maximize the application potential each of specific typology, highlight their limits and aid scholars in their selection of typologies for qualitative or quantitative research in order to get a better understanding of democratization processes or regime theories.

The current centrality of the concepts of democracy, totalitarianism, and authoritarianism in the fields of comparative politics and political sociology and the shortcomings of the existing empirical literature on these regime types suggest that the Political Regimes Database may make possible important new contributions in the various areas of research it touches upon. Post-Cold War autocracies appear novel in their use of multiparty elections, attracting the attention of scholars and policymakers alike. A longer historical view, however, reveals that what is unique is not electoral authoritarianism after 1989, but rather the electoral inactivity of autocracies during the Cold War period. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, authoritarian regimes have held multiparty elections. The prevalence of these elections begs the question of whether they have any effects on political liberalization and democratization. But the study of authoritarian elections in processes of political change faces a number of theoretical and empirical challenges that can only partly be surmounted with existing approaches.
