Using his experiences of life in the corporate jungle, K.F. Dochartaigh has produced a survival manual that assists and guides the reader on how best to navigate corporate pitfalls and avoid being 'trapped'. The book fuses three separate but intertwined disciplines of the animal kingdom, the guerrilla battlefield, and the corporate world to help establish patterns of behavior and to understand the motivations that drive each action. All three areas share a common environment: the jungle, where visibility is limited, and ambush is the only method of attack by predators. The book blends animal and human psychology and provides safe passage in all its encounters. This book does not condone war--in fact, quite the opposite--and, as you will see, it takes more of a defensive position in repelling attacks and seeks to promote the occurrence of collaboration over individual competition, which will also become apparent. It is not a "call to arms" or a promotion of anarchy--not by any stretch of the imagination--as it merely assists the individual in adapting within their environment in order to ensure their survival. Whether you work as an accountant, IT consultant, lawyer, salesperson, or project manager, the same logic still applies because there is a natural order in all corporate vocations.

This book is about the radical novelty of modern polities in a functionally differentiated world society. Premodern states were at the apex of a stratified, hierarchical society. They dominated society and all its groups and strata. Modern polities have to be understood through the ecology of relations among different function systems. They have to find and incessantly redefine their place in society. They produce decisions that are collectively binding, but in preparing these decisions experience constraints and knowledge deficiencies that are related to the complexity of a functionally differentiated society. The book concentrates on six analytical perspectives that reflect how modern polities are embedded into 21st century society. These perspectives are: the concept of inclusion and the inclusion revolution constitutive of modern polities; the internal differentiation of polities that endows them with an unprecedented complexity; the fact that polities do not know anything about society and the ways in which they compensate for this; representation and responsiveness as strategies to reconnect with society; the self-restriction of some polities that brings about ever new autonomous expert organizations; the symmetrical rise of autocracies and democracies as the two modern variants of political regimes.

Over a relatively short period of time, Beijing moved from dismissing the UN to embracing it. How are we to make sense of the People's Republic of China's (PRC) embrace of the UN, and what does its engagement mean in larger terms? This study focuses directly on Beijing's involvement in one of the most contentious areas of UN activity - human protection - contentious because the norm of human protection tips the balance away from the UN's Westphalian state-based profile, towards the provision of greater protection for the security of individuals and their individual liberties. The argument that follows shows that, as an ever-more crucial actor within the United Nations, Beijing's rhetoric and some of its practices are playing an increasingly important role in determining how this norm is articulated and interpreted. In some cases, the PRC is also influencing how these ideas of human protection are implemented. At stake in the questions this book tackles is both how we understand the PRC as a participant in shaping global order, and the future of some of the core norms which constitute that order.

This open access edited collection explores obstacles that impede, and potential pathways toward improving, the material and psychological well-being of youth in and from West Africa. Contributors range from researchers to practitioners, offering a transatlantic, transcontinental set of perspectives on the mounting evidence that, whether they reside in poor "underdeveloped" or wealthier (OECD) countries, young people who live in poverty and are African-born or of African descent are disproportionately burdened by the global phenomenon of increasing income inequality. For participants in temporary international relocation programs, safe return is a key challenge. How can threatened civil society actors make an informed decision on whether return to their home countries or prior work locations can be safe? Which mechanisms can host programs include from the beginning to plan for return, and to assess the conditions for return? How can post-return follow-up and reintegration be supported? This study identifies challenges and best practices for planning safe return, and gives recommendations for program managers of how to support civil society actors in their decision-making and planning life after relocation.

The Small Island Development States (SIDS) and other developing coun­tries affected by climate change are demanding more attention be given to climate-related losses and damages. The issue of "loss and damage" is being addressed in UNFCCC negotiations; however, the SIDS regard the Security Council as another key place for related debates. The Security Council can sound out climate policy interests to increase knowledge and improve the means of early warning. Moreover, its role can be to focus on the security aspects of climate risks and highlight im­portant preventive approaches. These include, above all, development policy and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (the UN 2030 Agenda). The demands on the Security Council are strongly linked to the inter­national climate negotiations. Thus, Germany's commitment to climate policy has to be broad and long-term in times of dwindling multilateralism. Due to the Corona pandemic, short-term national and international policy agendas have readjusted to address the crisis situation, which has been detrimental to the climate policy agenda. A debate at the Security Council should nevertheless keep the focus on climate-related risks as such. (author's abstract)

More systematic collaboration between temporary international relocation initiatives is necessary to guarantee that persecuted civil society actors will be provided with protective relocation in the safest and most effective way. This study identifies conditions and next steps for a more formal and structural collaboration of existing and developing initiatives. It addresses questions of case referral systems, data protection and security standards, knowledge exchange and joint monitoring on safe return, inter alia.

"The sixth general election since the arrival of democracy occured at a critical moment in South Africas's history. Since sweeping to a fifth electoral victory under the leadership of President Jacob Zuma in 2014, the ANC had become embroiled in one social scandal and failure of governance after another. It had allowed the state to be captured' by outside interests, corruption had flourished, the economy had plunged and the ruling party itself had become deeply divided between competing factions. When Cyril Ramaphosa, running on a reformist platform, won the race to become party leader at the ANC's national conference in December 2017, the stage was set for him to revive the economy and cleanse the state of corruption. Yet his narrow victory meant his internal party opponents remained sharply divided between pro and anti-Zuma factions. Ramaphosas road to reform was thus strewn with numerous obstacles."--Back cover
