This document contains the Preliminary Report for SYPE 2009. Responding to a dearth of data on youth in Egypt, the Population Council conducted a comprehensive situation analysis of Egyptian adolescents and young people: the Survey of Young People in Egypt (SYPE) 2009, which covered a nationally representative sample of 15,029 young people aged 10–29. SYPE collected data on the five key life transitions of education, work, family formation; health; and civic and political participation. This preliminary report presents initial findings related to the principal issues covered in the survey. This report provides some of the preliminary findings from SYPE on young people's health-related issues, education experience and attainment, employment status and livelihood options, migration, family formation, and civic participation.

Pakistan faces a number of challenges to increasing modern contraceptive use. Although there are encouraging signs, such as improved male participation, the addition of about four million current FP users, from 2007 to 2013, and a responsive policy environment with demonstrated political and financial commitment to meeting the country's FP2020 goals, the task that lies ahead is still huge. This report presents the findings of a landscape analysis of family planning (FP) in Pakistan by the Population Council in 2015 and 2016, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This landscape analysis assesses both demand and supply side shortcomings in the FP market, and provides a comprehensive assessment of consumers, service provision, contraceptive supply, and policy and regulations to help identify opportunities for investment that could catalyze an escalation in contraceptive prevalence. Based on the landscape, the report proposes 13 areas of major investments for addressing demand and supply side challenges to FP in Pakistan.

This report presents the results of the DMPA Monitoring Study undertaken by Population Council, Manila, as a technical assistance project for the DMPA Reintroduction Program of the Department of Health. The primary objective of the study is to provide data on DMPA (injectable contraceptive) utilization and continuation rates that may be used to project the logistical needs of the program for the next four years (1995–1998). Availability of DMPA supplies, and information, education, and communication (IEC) materials on DMPA in the facilities were also monitored to provide some measure of the effectiveness of the distribution system. The study covers a 15-month observation period from April 1994 to June 1995 and concentrates on 1,379 DMPA-dispensing health facilities in the ten local government units (LGUs) covered by Phase I of the DMPA Reintroduction Program. Data presented herein are based upon reports received as of August 9, 1995, from at least 80 percent of the total DMPA-dispensing facilities in these pilot LGUs.

During the past decade, a significant increase in reported cases of HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe prompted the government, local organizations, and international donors to intensify prevention efforts. As part of this response, in November 1996 Zimbabwe's National AIDS Coordinating Programme invited Population Services International to launch a social marketing program to promote the female condom, making this protective device widely available for the first time in Africa. After an acceptability study showed that Zimbabwean men and women liked using the female condom, leaders of these organizations encouraged public discussion and media attention, which helped pave the way to approval and introduction of the device. This brief presents the findings of a case study conducted by Grace Osewe and sponsored by the Population Council's HIV/AIDS operations research Horizons Project. The study reviewed the social and political factors that led to government approval and commercial introduction of the female condom in Zimbabwe.

Population dynamics in urban and rural areas are different. Understanding factors that contribute to local population changes has various socioeconomic and political implications. In the present study, we use population census data in Japan to examine contributors to the population growth of residential clusters between years 2005 and 2010. The data set covers the entirety of Japan and has a high spatial resolution of 500 × 500 m2, enabling us to examine population dynamics in various parts of the country (urban and rural) using statistical analysis. We found that, in addition to the area, population density, and age, the shape of the cluster and the spatial distribution of inhabitants within the cluster are significantly related to the population growth rate of a residential cluster. Specifically, the population tends to grow if the cluster is "round" shaped (given the area) and the population is concentrated near the center rather than periphery of the cluster. Combination of the present results and analysis framework with other factors that have been omitted in the present study, such as migration, terrain, and transportation infrastructure, will be fruitful.

To control the spread of coronavirus, the Kenyan Ministry of Health COVID-19 Taskforce has implemented initial prevention and mitigation measures. Of concern are the densely overcrowded, poor urban slums where sanitation and social distancing measures are near impossible. COVID-19 would spread rapidly and be devastating under these conditions. To inform the Taskforce strategy, the Population Council COVID-19 study team utilizes rapid phone-based surveys to collection information on knowledge, attitudes and practices among ~2,000 heads of household sampled from existing prospective cohort studies across five Nairobi urban slums. Iterations of the survey will be conducted every 1-2 weeks. Baseline findings on awareness of COVID-19 symptoms, perceived risk, awareness of and ability to carry out preventive behaviors, misconceptions, and fears will inform Taskforce interventions. In subsequent rounds, behavior change messages will be randomly assigned to measure effectiveness, or if randomization is not feasible, survey questions on exposure and response to government campaigns will be evaluated using causal inference approaches.

The Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP) is a four-year effort to support more than 11,000 of the most vulnerable adolescent girls in Zambia. AGEP was led by the Population Council, in partnership with the Young Women's Christian Association of Zambia, the National Savings and Credit Bank of Zambia, and the Government of Zambia. The program design was based on the asset-building framework which posits that if girls are able to build social, health, and economic assets in the short term, there will be longer-term dividends on health and education outcomes. This brief reports on midterm findings of the study which raise many questions about the interplay between established social norms and interventions that are new to these girls and their communities. They suggest that the direct-to-girls platform, while a necessary component of reaching vulnerable girls, is not sufficient in the Zambian context to overcome the range of individual, household, and community-level factors preventing a safe, healthy, and productive transition into adulthood.

Background: The population growth rate of Central Java Province is considerably above the ideal. Therefore, the Provincial and Regional Governments need to carefully plan the development programs by analyzing the family knowledge of population issues. This study aims to determine the family knowledge of population issues.Design and Methods: This research used the secondary data analysis (SDA) method. The data were taken from the 2019 Performance and Program Accountability Survey (SKAP) of the Population of KKBPK (Population of Family Planning and Family Development), Central Java Province. The data included in the 2019 SKAP Keluarga on population issues will be analyzed using descriptive quantitative analysis.Results: According to the research data, 51.5% of respondents understood population issues. The commonly recognized issues are unemployment (95.5%), employment (97.1%), and poverty (97.1%). The source of information widely used by respondents is the television (91.9%). Additionally, officers or communities that provide abundant information about population issues are friends, neighbors, and relatives (72.8%). Furthermore, formal educational institutions, including schools (47.8%), and community organizations (youth organizations, PKK/Family Welfare Program, Integrated Health Service Post, and religious organizations) (49.6%) provided information.Conclusions: In conclusion, efforts to increase the knowledge about population issues can be done by optimizing the function of television, close circles, the role of formal educational institutions and social organizations.

Data on availability of DMPA supplies and IEC (information, education, and communication) materials relating to DMPA were also monitored to provide some measure of effectiveness of the program's distribution system. The study covers a 21-month observation period from April 1994 to December 1995 and concentrates on 1,379 DMPA-dispensing health facilities in the ten local government units (LGUs) covered by Phase I of the DMPA Reintroduction Program. The monitoring study obtained information on the level and patterns of DMPA use in the ten pilot LGUs to serve as a basis for determining logistical needs up to 1998. Other goals focused on collecting information on the DMPA drop-out problem, on the effectiveness of the program's system for distributing DMPA-related supplies, and on inter-LGU differentials in program performance.

No woman should be hit, yelled at, or abused in any way during childbirth. However, laboring women in Kenya and elsewhere may experience inhumane treatment in hospitals and clinics. This abuse is a key yet overlooked reason why only four in ten pregnant women in Kenya deliver at health facilities. To increase the number of women delivering in health facilities and thereby reduce maternal deaths, governments, health systems, and practitioners need sound evidence documenting the disrespect and abuse that women experience. Through the Heshima Project, the Population Council is changing how health systems and women think about quality maternity care by developing an intervention model to sensitize communities about women's rights and to give health-care providers the tools they need to provide better care. This brief provides research results, explains what drives disrespect and abuse, and notes solutions being offered by through the Heshima Project.

Content has not been peer reviewed, and this version may be updated with additional analyses in subsequent publications. --- The Population Council has a longstanding partnership with indigenous communities through the Abriendo Oportunidades program. Our experience working in indigenous settings has allowed us to witness a lack of indigenous inclusion in government activities. To better understand indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic in Guatemala, we conducted 144 key informant interviews using mobile phones in ten municipalities from April 14–18, 2020. This brief describes highlights of the key informant interviews; participants' knowledge of infection, symptoms, and prevention measures; risk perception; challenges to community prevention; and recommendations.

Health is a direct source of human welfare and also an instrument for raising income levels. The authors discuss a number of mechanisms through which health can affect income, focusing on worker productivity, children's education, savings and investment, and demographic structure. As well as the impact of current illness, health may have large effects on prospective life spans and life cycle behavior. Studies suggest there may be a large effect of health and nutrition in uteri, and in the first few years of life, on physical and cognitive development and economic success as an adult. Macroeconomic evidence for an effect on growth is mixed, with evidence of a large effect in some studies. However, there is a possibility that gains from health may be outweighed by the effect of increased survival on population growth, until a fertility transition occurs. The low cost of some health interventions that have large-scale effects on population health makes health investments a promising policy tool for growth in developing countries. In addition, higher priority could be given to tackling widespread 'neglected' diseases that is, diseases with low mortality burdens that are not priorities from a pure health perspective, but that do have substantial effects on productivity.

To bridge the gap between the demand for innovation and access to novel contraceptive options for breastfeeding women, the Population Council and its partners conducted three distinct Willingness to Pay research initiatives to estimate the effect of price on demand for the Progesterone Vaginal Ring (PVR) in sub-Saharan Africa, where unmet need is outpacing the ability to provide timely, cost-effective access to new methods. Additionally, changes in the resource landscape have prompted governments to explore "Total Market" solutions. The Total Market Approach is defined as a coordinated approach that serves all clients in a country—from those requiring free or highly subsidized services to those who are willing and able to pay—to maximize access, equity, and sustainability and to direct scarce resources to sectors and users where need is not met. Using this as a guiding design principle, the research presented in this brief provides new insights on the amount consumers are willing to pay for the PVR from public, private nonprofit, and private commercial service sectors.

In the early 2000s, the Population Council collaborated on the first rigorously evaluated program in Africa to delay the age of marriage and support girls married as children. Berhane Hewan (Light for Eve) targeted married and unmarried girls aged 10–19 in rural areas of Amhara. The program's four components—community conversations to raise awareness and address cultural and social norms, provision of school supplies to remain in school, conditional asset transfer to address economic incentives to marry girls, and girls' mentoring groups—were based on formative research and consultations with local leadership. Building on the Berhane Hewan pilot, the Council and partners initiated the second generation of work to identify the most cost-efficient and scalable models to prevent child marriage in Africa. This brief notes that the experiences with Berhane Hewan in sub-Saharan Africa are among the first studies to rigorously test how best to prevent child marriage on the continent. This research will inform governments and development partners on how to design minimum, scalable, cost-effective projects to delay age at marriage and support married girls in a range of settings in Africa.
