A French agriculture ailing face of globalization? ; Une agriculture française en perte de vitesse face à la mondialisation ?
In a French agricultural context characterized by stability of the overall agricultural production (by volume), a decrease of domestic consumption (at least for many food products including milk, meat and wine), a deep farms restructuring, an increased concentration of the food industry and high volatility in input prices and marketed products, this paper discusses the French commercial performance of our agribusiness with European Union countries and with third countries. Based on statistical data from the customs (imports, exports and trade balance, both in value and in volume) our performance has declined in several major categories of food products. The goal is to provide an analysis on the following key questions: who are major customers and suppliers of France in the food industry? Does the growth in global food demand, especially in Asia and Africa, offers development opportunities and for what types of products? After decades of growth of French exports to neighboring European countries, favored by the principle of Community preference and population growth in these countries, France is it going to know a reversal of fortune?
