Cassius Dio's account of Caligula's principate pivots on the divide between Caligula's 'democratic' debut and his later decline into despotism. As Dio reports, the murder of the emperor in 41 CE polarised the Senate on the question of whether to abolish the Principate or to confirm it. It is likely that Dio's interest in such a crucial passage depends on his own experience of the end of Commodus and the accession of Pertinax in 192-193 CE. The underpinning of his political thought is Stoic: when the relationship between the princeps and the Senate collapses, the solution is not so much 'republicanism' as a 'republican spirit', to be intended as a fruitful cooperation between the two.

Analizirajući 28 većinom cjelovitih natpisa iz Salone koji spominju osobe iz rimskog vojnog sustava i oslobođenike, odnosno oslobođenice iz doba principata, autor je nastojao doći do što većeg broja podataka o odnosima između oslobođenika i njihovih patrona, o značajkama oslobođeničkih kognomena i o statusu vojnika koji su imali oslobođenike. ; In analysing 28 largely whole inscriptions from Salona which mention persons from the Roman military system and freedmen or freedwomen dated to the time of the Principate, the author attempted to obtain the most possible data on relations between freed individuals and their masters, the features of the cognomina of freedmen/women and the status of soldiers who had freedmen/women.

This paper intends to approach a study about the ongoing process of Romanization during the period of government of Tiberius by means of a provincial coin emission from Calagurris in the territory of the Vasconians. To achieve this objective we present an analysis of important elements shown on the coin: the imperial title on the obverse, the iconography and the two duoviri mentioned on the reverse. ; El presente trabajo pretende estudiar el proceso de romanización durante el gobierno de Tiberio mediante una emisión de moneda provincial de Calagurris en el territorio de los vascones. Para ello, presentamos un análisis acerca de los elementos importantes que se muestran en la moneda: el título imperial en el anverso, la iconografía y los dos duoviri mencionados en el reverso.

The article analyses the issues in question by means of a method used in the legal sciences, which in the Polish methodology is called "the historical and legal method." It involves presentation and analysis of selected legal institutions and of their evolution in time. The following issues—identified across the pages of the Gospel—are analysed in this article: political and systemic context of evangelical events (section 1), the role of censuses in the implementation of Roman administrative and systemic principles (section 2), Roman tax law in the context of tax burdens resting on residents of Judea (section 3) and the Roman judicial procedure in the context of the trial of Jesus (section 4). In the summary, the author answers the research question asked in the introduction: to what degree does the historical and legal significance of selected institutions of Roman law, inspired by the description of these institutions in the canonical gospels of the New Testament, determine the contemporary understanding of the gospels themselves?
