From theory to practice: utilizing integrative seminars as bookends to the Master of Public Administration program of study
In: Teaching public administration: TPA, Band 31, Heft 2, S. 186-203
ISSN: 2047-8720
Integrative seminar style courses are most often used as an application-oriented capstone in place of a thesis or comprehensive exam requirement in Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree programs. This article describes and discusses the benefits of a unique approach of one National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA)–accredited U.S. MPA program that employs integrative seminar style courses at both the start and end of the program of study. The first seminar integrates theory while the last seminar integrates practice, while both utilize reflection as a synthesizing pedagogy. The other core courses in the program of study use distinct theories to analyze practice while building core competencies. This article explores the importance of theory in a professional degree program, describes and explains both integrative seminars, and discusses the value fostered by the pattern of synthesis-analysis-synthesis facilitated through integrative seminars and reflective pedagogies.

Härtung oder Selbstauflösung der Soziologie? Die BA-/MA-Studiengänge an deutschen Hochschulen
In: Soziale Ungleichheit, kulturelle Unterschiede: Verhandlungen des 32. Kongresses der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie in München. Teilbd.
Teilbd.
Curriculum Evaluation and Revision in a Nascent Field: The Utility of the Retrospective Pretest—Posttest Model in a Homeland Security Program of Study
In: Evaluation review: a journal of applied social research, Band 33, Heft 1, S. 54-82
ISSN: 1552-3926
Although most academic disciplines evolve at a measured pace, the emerging field of homeland security must, for reasons of safety and security, evolve rapidly. The Department of Homeland Security sponsored the establishment of a graduate educational program for key officials holding homeland security roles. Because homeland security is a nascent field, the establishment of a program curriculum was forced to draw from a variety of disciplines. Curriculum evaluation was complicated by the rapid changes occurring in the emerging discipline, producing response shift bias, and interfering with the pre—post assessments. To compensate for the validity threat associated with response shift bias, a retrospective pretest—posttest evaluative methodology was used. Data indicate the program has evolved in a significant and orderly fashion and these data support the use of this innovative evaluation approach in the development of any discipline.

An Exploratory Study of Computer Program Debugging
In: Human factors: the journal of the Human Factors Society, Band 16, Heft 3, S. 258-277
ISSN: 1547-8181
This experiment represents a new approach to the study of the psychology of programming, and demonstrates the feasibility of studying an isolated part of the programming process in the laboratory. Thirty experienced FORTRAN programmers debugged 12 one-page FORTRAN listings, each of which was syntactically correct but contained one non-syntactic error (bug). Three classes of bugs (Array bugs, Iteration bugs, and bugs in Assignment Statements) in each of four different programs were debugged. The programmers were divided into five groups, based upon the information, or debugging "aids", given them. Key results were that debug times were short (median = 6 min.). The aids groups did not debug faster than the control group; programmers adopted their debugging strategies based upon the information available to them. The results suggest that programmers often identify the intended state of a program before they find the bug. Assignment bugs were more difficult to find than Array and Iteration bugs, probably because the latter could be detected from a high-level understanding of the programming language itself. Debugging was at least twice as efficient the second time programmers debugged a program (though with a different bug in it). A simple hierarchical description of debugging was suggested, and some possible "principles" of debugging were identified.
Development Strategies of Study Programs in University of Riau
Implementation of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in December 2015 brings the impact and substantial changes to the management of higher education, especially Postgraduate Program of University of Riau. Even though the development of a postgraduate study program is a demand, but in practice must refer to the Law on Higher Education and the Regulation of the Minister concerned. The government with all of its authorities restructures the higher education system to avoid implementation of higher education institution that does not comply with applicable regulations. The most principle aspects in the development and management of studies program at the University of Riau are associated to (a) the development of educational infrastructures and facilities (b) home-base lecturers (c) curriculum, and (d) the achievement of accreditation. The competition appeared between public and private university has become an open competition, including with other universities abroad. Students can choose a study program based on qualifications and reputation earned by each institution without distinguishing public or private, domestic or foreign university. The open competition will bring a real impact on the university's existence in the future. Policy of development and establishment of study program has to be done by comprehensive evaluation because reputation and competency of graduates are not enough with the educational process, but it should also establish cooperation with abroad institutions that can raise its rating and existence as a provider of qualified higher education. Therefore, various conditions relating to the educational process, quality, recognition of the business world and others should be a forward concern.
