This text examines Immanuel Kant's impact on moral philosophy from his time to our own. Kant's moral philosophy can seem complicated, but at the most basic level it is driven by the simple idea that the greatest possible freedom for each combined with an equal degree of freedom for all is the fundamental principle of philosophy.

In 'Environmental Ethics and Medical Reproduction', Dr. Cristina Richie uses the term 'medicalized reproduction' (MR) to describe the impact of technology on human reproduction, including from pre-conception gamete retrieval, in-vitro fertilization (IVF), and birthing suites. Unlike other areas of high-carbon health care, such as organ transplantation or chemotherapy, medicalized reproduction does not treat, cure, or prevent disease. It is supported by an economized medical industry, and as such, is open for ethical scrutiny. This book considers how technology has fundamentally changed the discussion on biomedical ethics, environmental ethics, and reproductive ethics.

What do we owe future people? Intergenerational ethics is of great philosophical and practical importance, given human beings' ability to affect not only the quality of life of future people, but also how many of them there will be (if any at all). This book develops a distinctly contractualist answer to this question - we need to justify our actions to them on grounds they could not reasonably reject. The book explores what future people could or could not reasonably reject in terms of intergenerational resource distribution, individual procreative decisions, optimal population size, and risk imposition.

The phenomenal growth of minority populations in the South, particuarly Latinos and Asians, is quickly transforming the region's politics. As most political observers see a future rising Democratic Party in the region with Asian and Latino voters joining African Americans in supporting Democratic candidates, the analyses presented in this volume demonstrate little such certainty about the future competitiveness of the two major parties in the South.

'Social Work and the Arts' is a collection of writings that explores how expressive methods are used in social work education, practice, research, and community action. Edited by Shelley Cohen Konrad and Michal Sela-Amit, the book aims to answer the question: What do the arts offer social work education, research, and practice? This query is woven throughout the four sections of the book: first, on the various ways the arts are used in social work education; second, an examination of art-based social work research; third, a compilation of narratives by social workers who are artists in their own right; and finally, the future of the social work profession and its relationship to the arts.

Broad-based community organizing (BBCO) is perhaps the most widely used form of political participation supported by American religious institutions today. As organizing groups become more religiously diverse, however, so do the conceptions of sacred value that ground organizing in the first place. In today's political climate what we hold most dear, those sacred values such as human life, a land, or a natural resource may seem to only further entrench us in our enclaves and threaten the solidarity of any constituency. This book tells a different story. People organize to protect and fight for what they hold most dear. Using auto-ethnography from over a decade of interfaith BBCO experiences, Listening to the Spirit makes a case for the political role of sacred values in BBCO, especially as they show up in two organizing practices: the "listening campaign" and the "relational meeting."

'Freedom and Equality' explores foundational concepts for liberalism and feminism. Clare Chambers argues that the doctrines are compatible, but feminism is necessary because liberalism has been incapable of securing gender equality and women's liberation alone.

A central debate among scholars of Marx concerns whether Marxism has a moral content or is totally 'amoral' - perhaps either because it embraces a strict economic determinism or because it nihilistically sides with the proletariat without offering any objective justification for that stance. Philosopher Vanessa Christina Wills argues that Marx does articulate an ethical perspective that is present throughout his writings, both the more obviously humanistic and philosophical early writings and his later, economic and more empirically-grounded studies such as Capital. In 'Intersectionality', philosopher Naomi Zack presents a novel philosophical account of intersectionality - the process by which people already oppressed, experience more oppression because of their intersecting identities. Based on her 2022 Phi Beta Kappa Romanell Lectures, Zack explores the meaning of intersectionality through analysis of current events and controversies including the #MeToo movement, class opportunities for minorities in higher education, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

'The Virtue of Loyalty' presents ten new academic essays on the topic of loyalty considered as a virtue, written by scholars from a variety of disciplines including philosophy, law, religious studies, empirical psychology, and child development. Many of the essays are concerned with the issue of whether loyalty is a virtue, and under what conditions. Others confront questions pertaining to the psychological traits and commitments that accompany or enable loyalty.

'Reluctant Race Men' traces a history of ethical, philosophical, political, religious, and scientific challenges that Black American reformers lodged against configurations of race across the long nineteenth century. It reconstructs a largely ignored reform tradition showing race as diverse practices that configure human difference, sameness, hierarchy, and consciousness.

In 'Learning Without Lessons', David F. Lancy fills a rather large gap in the field of child development and education. Drawing on focused, empirical studies in cultural psychology, ethnographic accounts of childhood, and insights from archaeological studies, Lancy offers the first attempt to review the principles and practices for fostering learning in children that are found in small-scale, pre-industrial communities across the globe and through history. His analysis yields a consistent and coherent 'pedagogy' that can be contrasted sharply with the taken-for-granted pedagogy found in the West. The practices that are rare or absent from indigenous pedagogy include teachers, classrooms, lessons, verbal instruction, testing, grading, praise, and the use of symbols.
