Si tout ce qui touche au travail appelle une étude aussi attentive, c'est qu'il mérite d'être considéré comme un trait spécifique de l'espèce humaine. L'homme est un animal social, zoon politikon, qui, aujourd'hui encore, à travers la variété des complexes écologiques, à travers les diversités de rythme dans la marche du progrès technique, d'évolution dans la structure et le niveau économique des sociétés, est essentiellement occupé de travail. Le travail est un commun dénominateur et une condition de toute vie humaine en société. Les exemples classiques de travail animal, souvent cités, ceux de certains insectes (fourmis, termites, abeilles) ou mammifères (castors) ont été rapportés par la psychologie zoologique à des comportements instinctifs, dans un environnement de stimulations déterminées. Dès qu'il y a adaptation à une situation imprévue et, par exemple, fabrication d'outils, on se rapproche, comme l'ont montré les célèbres expériences de Kôhler (1928) sur des singes supérieurs à Ténériffe, des conditions et exigences intellectuelles du travail humain.
