Since 2000 there is a new bibliography on the Spanish Civil War with new tendencies on the historiography of this crucial period. Their starting point is the Right-wing government of the Partido Popular (1996-2004) & its ideological vision of the Civil War. The politicization of this issue is to be found on general works rather than historical & scientific research, where high standards have been maintained. The research on the War of 1936-1939 is still haunted by old problems & now also by more recent ones, including the memory of the conflict in present day democratic Spain. The main surprises came from works exploring new sources such as the former Soviet Union archives or from research using more sophisticated methodologies. References. This paper analyses the United States-Russia relationship in a changing context of growing challenges that have marked the mandates of Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev. The text starts by tracing the context where Obama and Medvedev come to power, and the dwindling of tensions that were very much present in this relationship, particularly in 2007 and 2008, leading to the Georgia war and the reset policy. The reset policy allowed the revision of procedures and the consolidation of trust, though the paper argues that effective coordination of policies and practices between Russia and the United States is still far from an objective reality. In an election year both in Russia & the United States, this article tries to assess the impact of the nearly simultaneous mandates of George W. Bush & Vladimir Putin on the relationship between those two countries. Its main conclusions point to a different 'intensity' in the way they pursued their goals & implemented their policies; to the basic similarity in the means employed by Washington & Moscow in their foreign & national security policies, & to the persistence of the same topics in the Russian-American agenda in these last eight years (the governance model, strategic & security options, energy issues). This discussion focuses on the cosmopolitan nature of Tel Aviv, the cultural & political realities of Israel, & the conflict between Israelis & Palestinians. Israel is a much more diverse nation than is commonly supposed, with TV stations broadcasting in Arabic & Russian, restaurants specializing in cuisines from around the world, & a population that hails from many different parts of the globe, with a great variety of cultural traditions. Specific topics surveyed include how the issues of globalization & diversity affect the Jewish state, the great contrasts between Israel's liberal urban areas & the more religiously conservative rural ones, Ariel Sharon's controversial policies regarding the occupied territories, the consequences of the victory of Hamas in the Palestinian elections, an analysis of the 2005 Israeli elections, & the potential new directions for the Israeli government in a post-Sharon era. The main trend in recent developments points to state recovery of control over the Russian Federation energy sector. This is a means to restore the international status of the former USSR through science & technology & the strengthening of the military-industrial complex financed by the revenues from oil & gas. To implement this strategy, President Putin relies heavily on his former secret service -- KGB, now FSB -- & on Saint Petersburg, where he was born. At the same time, he distances himself from the oligarchs & the inner circle of former President Yeltsin. References. Adapted from the source document.

Even before they were chosen as the Presidential hopefuls of their respective parties, Barack Obama & John McCain had already developed coherent foreign policy agendas. This article argues that both candidates propose to follow multilateral internationalist strategies & share a similar position on great many issues. They are opposed on a limited but significant set of issues, namely Iraq, Pakistan & the relationship with the Russian Federation. Adapted from the source document.

The main purpose of this paper is to examine the National Defense Strategies of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) in order to verify how the four countries evaluate the strategic landscape of this century, especially regarding the balance of power between the Great Powers, their immediate geographical surroundings and their relationship with the US. This work addresses specifically the similarities and differences among them and how these differences reflect in their respective defense policies. Among the four cases, the Brazilian one will be in especial focus. Adapted from the source document.
