Nowadays education is a global value and a particular challenge for all countries. The European Parliament during the Lisbon European Council (2010) stated that: "The rapid and accelerating pace of change means it is urgent for the Union to act now to harness the full benefits of the opportunities presented. Hence the need for the Union to set a clear strategic goal and agree a challenging programme for building knowledge infrastructures, enhancing innovation and economic reform, and modernising social welfare and education systems." All countries need to be aware of the problems and difficulties that education has especially the ones related to school career outcome in terms of performances, delays and school leaving phenomena that is a touching point for the European Union in the educational field. The European Union defines school-leavers those people aged 18 to 24 who have an educational degree that includes pre-primary, primary, secondary school or higher education, not greater than two years. In Italy school-leavers are students who leave school before the age of sixteen, which marks the end of the compulsory education period. The European Union explains that school-leavers are easily exposed to unemployment, they often need social subsidies for a longer period compared to better educated unemployed subjects and they have a higher risk of social exclusion. This leads to negative consequences both in countries' welfare and health systems. Finally, they are less involved in the "democratic process". The aim of European Parliament is a 10% reduction of the school-leaving rate before 2020 for people aged between 18 and 24. As it emerges from a MIUR statistic, the Italian condition is alarming. Italy is second in the OECD school-leaving rate ranking, with 17.75% of students under 25 failing to complete their higher education career. In my thesis I can't actually study the school-leaving issue as a whole because I don't dispose of sufficient information to follow all the students until the end of their school careers. This is the reason why I have decided to focus on a different aspect: the success or failure of school career meaning the achievement of the high school diploma in time, in case of success, or with a delay in case of failure. My work introduces a statistical study of the school career outcome in secondary and higher education concerning the scholastic population of Pisa Province with the aim of identifying which educational/social/economical variables are the keys to explain the success or failure outcome in the students careers. The statistical study was directed by Pisa Province OSP following the scholastic careers of a cohort of 3185 students who attended secondary and high schools in Pisa Province. The longitudinal data for the students of the cohort were collected over 8 years, since sy 2005/2006, first year of secondary school, until sy 2012/2013, the last year of high school, i.e. the completion of the legal duration of secondary education in Italy.

The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of 'Dialogues' as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with 'others', which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, "dialogue" as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title 'translated' into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

The paper explores the relationship between information, creativity and innovation focusing on libraries (especially school libraries) and highlighting their role in supporting creativity and key competences for the 21st century. Creativity is the outcome of a learning process that requires a large amount of information. In the dynamic path from creativity to economic growth, innovation is a necessary condition, central to the economy and the social development. Libraries contribute to creativity and to the development of innovative procedures thanks to the pluralism they assure: they are an environment and a key tool for an effective education to information and awareness. The school library, as a result of three basic elements – staff, spaces and collections – has a specific educational and pedagogical role. Together with the school it belongs to, it aims at raising informed citizens able to take an active part in society. These skills are also detectable in the three main categories defined by the OECD, and in the eight key competences for the 21st Century established by the European Union. The introduction of the eight key competences in the Italian school curriculum has so far paid a particular attention to the digital ones, but the contribution of the library is ignored. During such a crucial developmental phase for children and young people, school library services of good quality are to be provided to pupils (and the school community). The school library should be a welcoming environment that stimulates curiosity and interests and communicates warmth, comfort, variety and functionality in order to establish that "third space" where the curricular knowledge meets and merges with the knowledge of which students are carriers, enhancing the personal knowledge and divergent thinking. In order to abridge the social gap and foster inclusion and innovation, more investments should be put – even in hard times like the current ones – in the school library (especially in governmental schools) because the education of young people affects the future of society. ; L'intervento esplora il complesso rapporto tra informazioni, creatività e innovazione soffermandosi sulle biblioteche – in particolar modo quelle scolastiche – per evidenziarne il ruolo a sostegno della creatività e delle competenze giudicate essenziali per il 21° secolo. La creatività è il risultato di un processo di apprendimento che richiede una grande quantità di informazioni e, nel percorso dinamico che va dalla creatività alla crescita economica, l'innovazione è inserita quale condizione necessaria e centrale per l'economia e lo sviluppo sociale. Garantendo il pluralismo, le biblioteche contribuiscono alla creatività e allo sviluppo e costituiscono un ambiente e uno strumento essenziale per un'efficace educazione all'informazione e alla responsabilità. La biblioteca scolastica, intesa come insieme di tre elementi base – personale, spazi, collezioni – ha un compito prevalentemente educativo e pedagogico poiché, assieme alla scuola di cui fa parte, mira a formare cittadini informati e in grado di partecipare attivamente alla società. Queste competenze sono rintracciabili anche nelle tre categorie indicate dall'OECD (Organizzazione per la cooperazione e lo sviluppo economico) e nelle otto competenze chiave per il 21° secolo individuate dall'Unione Europea. Di queste otto competenze chiave, nel curriculum scolastico italiano hanno ricevuto particolare attenzione soprattutto quelle digitali, ma è stato ignorato il potenziale apporto strategico della biblioteca. In una fase così cruciale dello sviluppo dei bambini e dei ragazzi è necessario invece assicurare agli allievi (e a tutta la comunità scolastica) servizi bibliotecari scolastici di qualità, erogati in ambienti capaci di stimolare curiosità e interessi, di comunicare accoglienza, agio e funzionalità, e di costituire quel "terzo spazio" in cui il sapere curricolare incontra e si fonde con il sapere di cui gli allievi sono portatori, secondo un sistema di apprendimento che valorizza i saperi personali e il pensiero divergente.Anche in tempi di ristrettezze come quelli attuali, per evitare il divaricarsi della forbice sociale e sostenere l'inclusione e l'innovazione si dovrebbe investire di più nella biblioteca scolastica, particolarmente nella scuola pubblica, perché la formazione dei giovani influisce sul futuro della società.

This assay examines a review of the research literature on gender and educationand summarises the main findings from international performancesurveys on gender differences in education. It discusses the gender gaps interms of boys outperforming girls and girls outperforming boys and providessecondary analyses referring to relevant international surveys, such asProgress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), the Programme forInternational Student Assessment (PISA) and Trends in International Mathematicsand Science Study (TIMSS). The comparative overview of policiesand measures in place in European countries with respect to gender equalityin education forms the main part of the report. Specific examples are givento illustrate the extent to which European countries have been implementingconcrete policy measures that target gender inequalities in education. ; Questo saggio propone una rilettura della letteratura di ricerca sul generee l'educazione sulla base dei risultati principali di indagini internazionalisulla scuola come il Progress in International Reading Literacy Study(PIRLS), il Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) e ilTrends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). Lapanoramica comparativa delle politiche e delle misure in vigore nei paesieuropei per quanto riguarda la parità di genere nell'istruzione costituisce laparte principale del saggio. Esempi specifici sono dati per illustrare lamisura in cui i paesi europei hanno attuato misure concrete che hannocome oggetto le disuguaglianze di genere nell'istruzione*.

L'Unione Europea definisce Early Leaving from Education and Training il fenomeno dell'abbandono dell'istruzione scolastica o della formazione professionale senza il completamento degli studi secondari superiori e senza il rilascio del certificato scolastico corrispondente (ISCED 3). L'acronimo ELET si aggiunge all'altro, forse più celebre, NEET, ovvero young people Neither in Employment nor in Education and Training che indica la fascia di giovani adulti (tra i 18 e i 24 anni) che non sono occupati in attività di studio, formazione o nel lavoro. L'abbandono precoce degli studi e della formazione è un elemento di forte criticità per le conseguenze che genera sulle vite dei singoli che affrontano da una posizione di estrema debolezza e precarietà il mercato del lavoro, la partecipazione alla società civile (OCSE, 2012), l'accesso alle risorse e alle informazioni. Per queste ragioni, la riduzione del tasso degli Early School Leavers (ESL) al di sotto del 10% è uno degli obiettivi della strategia Europa 2020, che invita gli stati membri ad implementare politiche nazionali tese al ridurre gli ESL. Il contrasto all'abbandono scolastico e formativo degli ESL costituisce, dunque, una sfida complessa perché legata a un fenomeno multidimensionale che coinvolge l'Europa e concerne direttamente il nostro paese a causa delle sue ricadute sul piano culturale, sociale, politico ed economico oltre che per l'impatto sui più giovani. Infatti, gli ESL sono spesso ragazzi/e che hanno difficoltà economiche e di apprendimento, vivono situazioni di svantaggio sociale e hanno problemi legati alle famiglie o alla cultura di origine. Essi/e trovano ostacoli nel momento della transizione tra livelli scolastici o formativi diversi e fanno fatica ad inserirsi ed interagire nel setting scolastico "tradizionale". La fascia di età compresa tra i 15 e i 18 anni, è sicuramente quella più critica e riguarda quegli adolescenti che non hanno assolto l'obbligo scolastico e/o l'obbligo formativo ed abbandonano il sistema di istruzione scolastica o della formazione professionale con un titolo di studio di secondaria inferiore (livello ISCED2). Obiettivo di questo contributo è quello di offrire un quadro il fenomeno degli ESL nel nostro paese, al fine di stimarne entità e problematicità; in seguito, verrà esaminata la specifica situazione della regione Veneto e presentato il progetto "Fuori Scuola" nelle sue finalità e nei suoi aspetti pedagogico-didattici. Nel far ciò, si rifletterà pure sulle modalità pedagogiche e di accompagnamento educativo più adatte per aiutare gli ESL nel pervenire a forme di successo formativo, nel supportare lo sviluppo di concrete prospettive personali e lavorative.

Nel dibattito sulla qualità della scuola e sull'efficienza dei sistemi di istruzione e formazione stanno avendo sempre più importanza la leadership della dirigenza e le strategie organizzative. Il ruolo dei capi di istituto e dei loro più stretti collaboratori si è evoluto e oggi include competenze che non sono legate esclusivamente all'azione didattica ed educativa. Il caso dell'Inghilterra, dove le politiche in materia di istruzione hanno sempre concesso ampia autonomia alle scuole e dove la letteratura sul management scolastico gode ormai di una tradizione consolidata, si presta ad una lettura comparata che ha lo scopo di mettere in luce possibili spunti di innovazione per la scuola italiana, in particolare nel settore strategico della formazione dei dirigenti scolastici e degli insegnanti.

From October to December 2020, the schools of the Foundation Giovanni Paolo I di Mira (Venice) carried out a project for the promotion of the STEAM disciplines, thanks to a call from the Department for Equal Opportunities of the Presidency of the Italian Government in collaboration with the Centro Interdipartimentale per la Ricerca Didattica (CIRD) at the University of Trieste. The interest of the Foundation in the new disciplines started in 2017 to promote and develop creatively the spirit that had led to the establishment of the schools San Domenico Savio and San Pio X almost a century ago. The article illustrates the main activities carried out in the project, which ranged from robotics to tinkering, from coding to financial education and crowdfunding platforms. The initiative, entitled "Granma, did you know that… Elena, Fabiola, Ada and the others", envisages the implementation of students' skills along three axes: developing divergent creative thinking, overcoming gender stereotypes related to the STEAM disciplines and fostering an alliance between generations. Finally, a virtual exhibition allowed us to show the main results of the activities. ; Dall'ottobre al dicembre del 2020 le scuole della Fondazione Giovanni Paolo I di Mira (VE) hanno sviluppato, grazie a un bando del Dipartimento per le Pari Opportunità della Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri, un percorso formativo integrativo all'insegna delle materie STEAM con il supporto e la partecipazione del Centro Interdipartimentale per la Ricerca Didattica (CIRD) dell'Università degli Studi di Trieste. L'interesse della Fondazione per queste discipline nasce nel 2017 con l'intento di continuare a promuovere e a sviluppare in modo creativo, lo spirito originario che quasi cento anni prima ha indotto a fondare le scuole "San Domenico Savio" e "San Pio X". Il contributo illustra le principali iniziative proposte ai partecipanti, che sono spaziate dalla robotica al tinkering, dal coding all'educazione finanziaria e alle piattaforme di crowdfunding. Tre sono stati i cardini dell'iniziativa, intitolata "Ma nonna lo sai che… Elena, Fabiola, Ada e le altre": sviluppare il pensiero divergente, superare gli stereotipi di genere legati alle materie STEAM e promuovere un'alleanza tra le generazioni. Al termine dell'esperienza, una mostra virtuale infine ha consentito di divulgare i principali risultati conseguiti.

La cultura italiana, sospesa tra l'ammirazione incondizionata per don Lorenzo Milani e le accuse più infamanti e più offensive contro di lui e la sua scuola, non ha ancora fatto i conti con una pesante eredità, - umana e politica -, come quella lasciata dal priore di Barbiana. È una eredità ancora da scoprire e da comprendere nelle sue sfaccettature. Non è difficile ritenere di poter trovare in essa la chiave di un nuovo umanesimo contro le derive di una "società affluente" che separa ed emargina gli individui in ragione del loro avere piuttosto che del loro essere. La "rivoluzione nell'insegnamento", condotta da don Lorenzo, nel suo "fare scuola" a Barbiana, è parte di questa eredità straordinaria, diventata oggetto di polemiche settarie e astiose. La lezione di vita, che ne è derivata, è rimasta quasi inascoltata allora, ed è stata consumata, nel frattempo, dalla dimenticanza e dalle scorie del tempo. ; Polarised between wholehearted admiration for Lorenzo Milani and terrible and slanderous accusations against him and his school of thought, Italian culture has yet to come to terms with the human and political legacy left by Barbiana's prior. His legacy is yet to discover and fully understand in all its multifarious forms. It could be maintained that, through it, it is possible to find the key to a new humanism, to fight the degeneration of an "affluent society" which discriminates against individuals on the basis of what they have rather than on what they are. The "teaching revolution" led by don Lorenzo while in Barbiana is part of this extraordinary legacy which has been at the centre of fierce sectarian disputes. The underlying life lesson has remained unlearned since then, and is being lost beneath forgetfulness and the dust of time.

When facing changes induced by economic rationales rather than processesof critical emancipation, educators need to consolidate hermeneutic approachesto guarantee effective protection of differences, encourage divergentthinking, and increase democratic paths within pedagogic action. Ahorizon of meaning that is no longer dogmatic will thus provide the backdropto a new paideia. The paradigm of difference can thereby become akey to a present that does not wish to erase the past and has the ambitionto build the future through a participated and participating dialogue, in thename of common growth. In this dialectic within galaxies, however, the individualvuniverses should not lose their specificity. In the new paideia, universes of differences are places of and for mutual understanding. It is publiceducation's duty to promote cohabitation, solidarity and active citizenshipas strategies for inclusion and overcoming inequalities, wherever theymay arise. ; Dinanzi a trasformazioni prodotte da logiche economiche e non da processidi critica emancipazione, è indispensabile in educazione consolidarel'approccio ermeneutico per garantire una effettiva tutela delle differenze,per incentivare il pensiero divergente e per incrementare i percorsi didemocrazia nell'agire pedagogico. Un orizzonte di senso non più dogmatico,allora, farà da sfondo ad una nuova paideia; così il paradigma della differenzapuò diventare chiave di lettura di un presente che non vuole cancellareil passato e ambisce, in nome di una crescita condivisa, a costruire ilfuturo attraverso un dialogo partecipato e partecipante. Si tratta di una dialetticaall'interno di galassie nelle quali però i singoli universi non dovrannoperdere la loro specificità. Gli universi della differenza per la nuovapaideia sono, infatti, luoghi della e per la comprensione. La scuola, allora,ha l'obbligo di promuovere la convivenza, la solidarietà e la cittadinanza attivacome strategie per l'inclusione e per il superamento di ogni possibilesperequazione.

This dissertation aims to explore, from a pedagogical point of view and according to a "qualitative approach", the issue of sustainable implementation of new technologies at school. Take in account the exploratory researches undertaken in Italy (Emilia Romagna) and in the State of El Salvador (Central America), this work intends to stimulate the political and cultural debate around the issue of sustainability of ICT. It represents a first contribution to support schools in cooperating each other, in order to systematically manage the processes that make "possible" the sustainable implementation of ICT in the school. ; La presente dissertazione si propone di esplorare, da un punto di vista pedagogico e secondo un approccio qualitativo, il tema della implementazione sostenibile delle nuove tecnologie digitali in ambito scolastico. A partire dai risultati delle indagini esplorative condotte nella Regione Emilia Romagna (Italia) e nello Stato de El Salvador (America Centrale), le considerazioni raccolte e organizzate in questo lavoro vorrebbero rappresentare un primo contributo d'indirizzo politico e pedagogico per sostenere sia le scuole in aree e/o in situazioni di svantaggio, sia le scuole considerate di "eccellenza" nel cooperare tra loro e nel governare adeguatamente i processi che rendono "possibile" la implementazione sostenibile e sistemica delle TIC nella scuola.

Future economic growth and social progress in knowledge societies rely increasingly on innovation. Innovation require skill sets such as technical skills, thinking and creativity skills, as well as social and behavioural skills. A blind spot is, figuratively speaking, the inability to recognize a fact or to think clearly about a particular subject, mainly because of prejudice. The blind spot in the innovation of the education and training system lies between the aspiration to "make" a difference and the "prejudice" towards this ambitious goal. In the last 20 years, in fact, despite the fact that an evaluation system has been implemented in practice as well as in the norms, the main stakeholders have shown an attitude of aversion and opposition both to some provisions of the legislation and to the use of the assessment results made by the school administration. The lack of engagement in the innovation process is mainly due to the perception of the different conditions of the school system, which suffers from large structural inequalities and resources, a condition that reduces its possibility of being equal rather than quality-oriented. What to do then? It is important that the different stakeholders understand each other's opinions, expectations, prerogatives, principles and values that underpin the innovation (or innovations) and above all that the activities car-ried out are actually aimed primarily at the progress of student maturity and school progress, i.e. ensuring the specific needs of the main stakeholders in addition to the demands for innovation from the labor market. ; La crescita economica futura e il progresso sociale nelle società della conoscenza dipendono sempre più dall'innovazione. Questa richiede un insieme di abilità tecniche, capacità di pensiero e creatività, nonché abilità sociali e comportamentali.
