From 1998 till 2013, a former railwaycanteen on d'Herbouvillekaai in Antwerp that was transformed into a cultural hub by youthful idealists, hoodlums and enthousiasts who called themselves Scheld'apen, was home to an eclectic stream of artists, with over 1300 events occurring in those 15 years, before inevitably being demolished by city expansion plans. All those events produced a flux of visual communication, an enormous flow of printed media that fascinated artists and Scheld?apen aficionados Benny Van den Meulengracht-Vrancx and Bent Vande Sompele. Collecting items and building upon an already existing physical archive, they decided to pour a selection of works into a book: Graphic Design of Scheld?apen.00?Graphic Design of Scheld?apen? is the result of two years of collecting, three archival residencies at Het Bos (the new home of the still existing Scheld?apen organisation) and a short scanning residency at Frans Masereel Centrum. The book contains over 200 graphical works from a variety of different artists, a preface by Pieter Willems and texts by Roel Griffioen and Pia Jacques

The most different similar outcome/most similar different outcome (MDSO/MSDO) technique. A tool for the selection of causally relevant conditions in a database with a limited number of cases
The most different similar outcome/most similar different outcome (MDSO/MSDO) technique. A tool for the selection of causally relevant conditions in a database with a limited number of cases
In this contribution we discuss the potential of the most different similar outcome/most similar different outcome technique. The technique enables a researcher to cope with the degrees of freedom problem (large number of conditions/small number of cases). Through a systematic comparison of pairs of cases, the method identifies the conditions of likely most explanatory relevance to understand differences and similarities in outcome. The actual causal power of the conditions and the underlying causal mechanisms can be subsequently explored with other qualitative methods. The technique relies on the same causal assumptions as other configurational comparative methods, such as qualitative comparative analysis.

From research subject to case; a matter of reasoning!?
From research subject to case; a matter of reasoning!?
Many researchers have a cognitive problem in connecting an abstract research theme to concrete cases. The authors demonstrate a scheme of stepwise reasoning to overcome this gap. This scheme may be helpful in choosing cases for empirical research as well as understanding the logic of case selection.
In this very personal work, Marcel Smets, the forerunner of Belgian urban construction and former Flemish architect, gives an overview of the many projects, meetings and contributions that have drawn his professional life. From his personal archive, which he recently donated to the University of Leuven, Smets made a selection of meaningful pieces that illustrate the various aspects of his career. This rich footage along with some entertaining and contemplative essays provide the reader with an authentic view of the life of a urbanist between theory and practice

The introduction of women's suffrage did not lead to their proportional representation in the Dutch parliament; by the 1980s women occupied only about 25% of the seats in both chambers. A review of the literature suggests that research on this underrepresentation has usually focused on individual & institutional characteristics; however, problems of child care, the labor market, & other factors can make the political system inaccessible to women. Moreover, the selection processes of the political parties impede women's political advancement: decentralized procedures tend to minimize women's chances, while the imposition of quotas increases the likelihood of election of women candidates. 4 Figures, 41 References. Photographs of crime scenes are an as yet unexplored but valuable source for research into historic interiors. They offer an uncensored glimpse into the vernacular living circumstances of various segments of the population. This book presents a selection of original photographs and maps of crime scenes in the provinces of East Flanders and Antwerp in the 1920s and '30s. Six articles deal with the potential of crime scene photography for interior research, the establishment and functioning of the judicial laboratories of Ghent and Antwerp, inter-war interiors in Flanders through the lens of forensic photographs and files, as well as two case studies, on a lodging house in Antwerp South and a cottage villa in Merksem.00Exhibition: Vandenhove. The politicization of Belgian political parties since WWII has resulted in what is termed a "particracy," ie, a parliamentary democracy wherein party structures dominate the political decision-making process. The gradual institutionalization of party patronage within the parliament, ministerial cabinets, public administration, the judiciary, & mass media is discussed, examining mechanisms of recruitment & policy articulation. The process of within-party candidate selection is also considered, focusing on the shift away from rank-&-file participation toward central decisions by local & national party leaders, with a concomitant restructuring of "party discipline." Historical bases of the current patronage system are briefly considered, noting the prewar politicization of magisterial posts & the shift from reliance on party newspapers to party control of broadcast media administrators. The European Union affects the internal organization of national political parties. We found 'traces of Europe' in the party statutes of all Belgian parties that are represented in the European Parliament since 1999. Europe is, to a greater or lesser extent, present in party goals, rules on party membership, & party organs. Parties have elaborated rules for the organization of European elections, the selection of European executives, the formulation of party programs, & internal & external coordination of policy formulation. At first sight these rules seem to confirm the hypothesis that Europe is in the first place a concern of party leadership, & that it reinforces centralization of decision making. Yet the full confirmation of this hypothesis requires further comparative research on the Europeanization of political parties. 1 Appendix. Adapted from the source document.

An analysis of the Flemish radio program "BRT-Aktueel" 1989-1991 assesses the objective coverage of news in the construction of world image. News reports on domestic-, state-, country group-, & international organization-related issues were tabulated. It was found that, overall, only a small range of items were consistently covered in detail, with a preference for temporary events. Foreign issues formed the bulk of the reporting, dominated by European, then the former USSR, & finally US material. The selection of issues for reporting is a function of media in a democratic society, reflecting structural, hegemonic, & subjective rather than objective criteria. Among these were geographical proximity, the country's global status, media structure, press agencies, or journalist's personal preference. 7 Tables, 1 Figure. Adapted from the source document.
