The fundamental aim of the Inter-American Indigenist Institute is to give satisfaction, directly or indirectly, to the urgent needs of the aboriginal pop. of the Americas in order that these pop's may enjoy the benefits and advantages with in many cases are available only to groups of W. European origin. One of the difficulties in the realization of this purpose, is that of determining which inhibitants should be considered as of aboriginal descent. Linguistic, racial, and cultural classifications are inadequate in themselves and the determination is frequently a complex and difficult process. 3 approaches to the main purpose of the Institute have been made: (1) the empirical or practical approach; (2) the academic or scientific approach; and (3) the approach integrating the two forgoing approaches. The last has been most successful. J. E. Hughes.
